2nd hand smoke = Bullshit

2nd hand smoke is bollocks.

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-s...lung-cancer-and-secondhand-smoke-9004077.html

{There is "no clear link" between secondhand smoke and lung cancer, a study led by researchers at Stanford University has found.

After a decade-long study of more than 76,000 women, the researchers concluded that while there is still a strong association between smoking and lung cancer, there is no significant relationship between the cancer and exposure to passive smoke.

Published in the latest Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the study found that among current smokers, lung cancer was 13 times more common than in non-smokers, and four times more common among former smokers. But for women who had never smoked, it found that exposure to secondhand smoke did not significantly increase the risk of lung cancer.

Among the group of women who had lived with a smoker for 30 years or more, however, the study concluded that there was a relationship of "borderline statistical significance" between exposure to passive smoke and lung cancer.

Ange Wang, the Stanford University medical student who presented the study in June at this year's meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago, said: "The fact that passive smoking may not be strongly associated with lung cancer points to a need to find other risk factors for the disease [in non-smokers]."

The findings of the study will likely be questioned by Cancer Research UK however, who state on their website that "second-hand smoke can increase a non-smoker's risk of getting lung cancer by a quarter, and may also increase the risk of cancers of the larynx (voice box) and pharynx (upper throat)."}

The WHO has known this for years. In fact, they ordered their own research to be stopped, when preliminary results didn't tell them what they wanted to hear. Passive smoking is a big con, dreamt up by anti smokers, who don't like the smell or smokey eyes in bars, so they had to turn a nuisance, into a health risk.

Passive smoking is cover for industrial and automotive pollution. Every single breath you take when in an urban area, contains thousand of times more toxins and carcinogens, than 20 cigs a day do. Every time a non smoker whines about me smoking, I ask them when they will be fucking the car off, and running their home purely from solar and wind energy.

EDIT
It seems the neg rep fairy doesn't like science. Presumably, they don't believe all the studies which show medical value for Cannabis either...Or are they just prejudiced against something they don't like. Science, great when it says what you want to hear and confirms your pr-existing bias.

A few months ago, my central heating was on the blink, I called the council, they sent their gas fitter, and he refused to come in my house until I put out my cig.
The hand wringing puritans have got their way in the pubs and clubs, and now they are getting it in your home too. Thy are legally entitled to not come in. If you get burgled, the Pigs can refuse to come into your house, if you are smoking, all based on bad science.

Regarding liberal progressives being to blame, I think you'll find that the namby pamby brigade fall on both ends of the political spectrum, I consider myself progressive, in the true meaning of the word, but I am not a liberal.
To quote Christopher Hitchens, "I am not a liberal, I am a Socialist, a liberal is a dangerous compromise."

I would actually label my self what Noam Chomsky calls a "social libertarian". Again, using the real meaning of libertarian, and not the twisted US corporate version.

Wether or not you think its bs....nothing is more annoying as a non smoker than being at a show or concert and someones second hand smoke getting up in your face.

Not saying I know how bad it is, but it cant be good, can it?

It says exposure "did not significantly increase risk to lung cancer"....so it DID increase your risk, but not "significantly"

How much is not significant again?

That seems like an opinionated claim to me..

This reminds me of the article recently posted where a doc found that cannabis users had bigger hearts the term "significant statistical differences" but gave no statistics...

I just don't like the obscure and vague game that is often played with publishing an article with something medically related. Give me some data, not your interpretation or opinion of the data.

Im just chiming in because I USED to have really bad asthma and second hand smoke from ciggs was a definite trigger and has sent me to the ER before...(as soon as I started using cannabis my asthma went away)

As for the polar ice, I remember what a globe looked like in elementary school, with the big white part on top where santa lived..

What did the globe look like when you were in school?

The words used were "Borderline statistical significance" And this was not in all of the subjects, only in the group who lived full time with a smoker for 30 years. Living full time with a smoker for 30 years, is not the same as 5 or 6 hours, 100 nights of the years in bars and pubs.

Borderline is not the great smoking gun (no pun intended) for passive smoking that previous (lesser) studies have claimed.

Harry Lets think about this for a minute please. Please dont take this personally.

Heres what I am seeing...
Your GAS heat stopped working,
and you were INSIDE smoking with a GAS fueled heater that was not properly working?

IDK but it seems like common sense to not have any sources of combustion going while a gas heater isn't properly working?

Gas is explosive, I would have asked you to do the same.

1st, it was a problem with the valve on the radiator in my bedroom, not the boiler, and I told them that when I reported the issue. I could have fixed it myself, but that would be in breach of my tenancy agreement.. It is a council policy that their employees can refuse to enter a home when someone is smoking. If he was doing gas work, I wouldn't smoke, I'm not a moron.

Again dont take this personally Harry.

I just dont see much science in this article, I see some numbers like:
Decade long study
76000 women
group of women who had lived with a smoker for 30 years or more, however, the study concluded that there was a relationship of "borderline statistical significance" between exposure to passive smoke and lung cancer.

Here is the only "science" I see in the article : among current smokers, lung cancer is 13x more common than in non smokers

I'm sure the study itself is available if you want to read it. Newspapers don't generally publish entire scientific studies. They publish conclusions.

Also, nobody in their right mind disputes that smokers get lung cancer at significantly higher rates than non smokers. This article is about passive smoking, which has been shown to be dubious at best.
Check out the WHO's massive study, which they cut funding for when it started showing unexpected results. I will concede that after the funding was cut, the team accepted money from big tobacco, but the preliminary results already showed that passive smoking was a non-issue long before the WHO cut the money off and ordered the study buried (does any of this sound familiar--Nixon, cannabis cancer).

Also, your point about there being nothing more annoying than being a non-smoker in a smokey venue, is exactly what I meant when I said that anti-smokers had to turn a nuisance into a health risk, to get their way. Oh noes, my clothes and hair smell of cigs, what ever will I do. If only there was some way to remove this smell...it's not like i can have a shower or wash my clothes.

Definitely not taking anything personal mate:)

Im looking for it, please post it up if you find it.

Honestly One study or even 1 million studies will not erase the memory of being in the er hooked up to respirators filled with roids to help me breath after some second hand smoke caused a bad asthma attack.

Maybe it doesnt "significantly" increase your risk of cancer but it certainly has given me a few asthma attacks.

Well, I presume you will be lobbying for excessive perfume use to be banned then, because my mum had numerous asthma attacks triggered by clouds of perfume and cologne.
I don't mean to trivialise it, but lots of things cause lots of other things. Why can't venues be allowed to decide for themselves? The non smokers can go to a non smoking pub, or if they don't mind the smoke, go to a smoking pub. That's fair.

Perfume was a big trigger for me also, I can say that I am not a fan of its use in excess.

Cats really screwed me up.

I had hypoallergenic bedding.

Pipe tobacco never seemed to trigger it, I liked to smell of that. It was always ciggs.

I now smoke tobacco on rare occasion out of a chillum with hash for spiritual/ceremonial purposes. (1-2x a year)

Im all for venues deciding for themselves, they have well ventilated smoking areas in airports.

just fyi I haven't had asthma in over a decade, I can sleep next to cats and wake up with a clear nose, Ive smoked blunts and spliffs. Only thing that changed was I started puffin pot.

I've only taken one puff off or a cig when I was 8 years old. I can tell you as a non smoker I LOVE not coming home and smelling like an ashtray because of others smoking.

I agree that private businesses should be able to operate as they see fit, however I am not allowed to spark up a joint and it causes ZERO cancer so if we want to get our panties in a bunch the ban on public MJ consumption must be removed before any thought is given to the liberty issues of know cancer inducers (cigarette smokers).

As for the repair man, the only power he has in his little government job is to tell others not to smoke around him. How fucking shitty would his life be without this small concession to him? Just be glad you don't work all day along side worthless government employees.

Now you can spend your evening taking in the odourous assault that is perfumes, BO, puke and stale beer, previously mitigated by the cig stench...yay progress:biggrin:
