20gal tote + 7gal controller flower 5 plants

I wanted to flower 5 plants in a single 20g container vs 5 site dwc. I was going to attach a 7gal bucket to the side to act as a controller where I can access easily to add ph/nutes and drain. it would essentially be a two bucket undercurrent. I plan to flower after filling a 4x5 screen.

After research, it seems alot of people frown upon mixing roots together. If im using the same strain will I have any problems? I have also seen successful grows with this method. However, I am not sure if they could have been better if there truly is a root issue with multiple plants.

Can someone please help me understand why it would be bad for the roots? Or if it is even a bad thing.

Thanks!

Do you think I would be successful if it were only three plants in the tub?

Compared to 5 gal buckets, it would be the equivalent of 1 plant in 6 gal bucket?

Also, if its just a matter of space for the roots, would I be ok to do 5 in a bucket with short veg(minimal root growth)?

Thanks for info!

For a 4x5 screen, I would go with 3 in 7 gallon pots and call it a day. If you are able to veg longer, 2 10 gallons would do well.

I once did 3 in 10 gallon pots and completely filled a 4x8 screen and got great results. One of my favorite grows.
