2 Weeks Old - Yellow Leaves

I mixed potting soil with a teaspoon 12-6-6 fertilizer... the stuff that looks like a bunch of tiny beeds/birdseed. 2 weeks old. I know this plant doesn't look right. I've got another one too that has really stunted growth. One side of the first set of sprout leaves is sort of turning yellow, similar to the same thing with this plant, but the top two new sets of leaves are green, but really small, it's about 2" tall  What am I doing wrong? Thanks! :badday:

Every two or three days I water them just a tiny bit near the stem. I should also mention the edges of the leaves are just *slightly* "crisping" curling. Is this plant a gonner? For some reason I feel like it is LACKING something. What can I do to save it? Much thanks.

P.S. - Most of the guides I read suggested mixing a fertilizer with the soil at first. Then I've read some people say that it's best to start out with pure potting soil and feed the plant after a month.

It's an indoor plant potting soil. I think the brand is miracle grow, but it all it has in it is .01% of either P or K. The rest is compost, pete moss, etc. The plant is under two 40 watt, 40" tube lights that said they are for plant and aquarium light. The fertilizer brand I can't remember, but the instructions were for a teaspoon or a table spoon... I mixed the potting soil with steralized sand for drainage and there's some perlite in it too. This one plant shot up really fast. The other just barely has new leaves and is 2" tall. Is the yellow because it is low on nitrogen or something else? The soil breaks apart easy, I can tell you that much. Also, I noticed a white moss-looking texture on only the little pieces of wood that were in the soil, I took them out... The closet is about 3 feet long and 8 feet wide with sliding doors... The plants are about 1.5" from the tubes. Thanks.

it`s hrdly lacking anything..the seed and soil contains all the nuts and traceelements the seedling needs, atlest for the first couple of weeks

edit: imho

First off, I would not be using ferts in a pellet or bb form..they are slow release i.e.weeks or months.Plus they can burn tender roots/ I'm really suprised they are yellowing so early in the game? Several years ago I lost a beautiful outdoor plant...It was a major learning experience. The yellowing was a almost neon looking yellow on the new growth only..on a otherwise green plant. After much research, looking at many horticulture books..my plant was suffering a sulpher/magnesium deficiency(Epsom Salts). But the damage was swift and decisive..about a week later she was history.Generally yellowing from the stem up..is lack of N. yOU have really minor yellowing at this point..I would go find some Alaska fish 4-2-1 or 5-1-1 and mix about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. into a 1/2 gal. of h2o and pour that on..that should give them a quick boost.I'm not saying to go dump a bunch of epsom salts into you're soil..but a little mixed in you're soil wont hurt...I usually mix about 1tbs/gal of soil. Some guys might argue the epsom salt thinggy..but I know for a fact the stuff is solid gold. Good luck, and don't sweat it..you're little lady does'nt look that bad..just ditch that pellet fert. and use something water soluble.

What is you light? What are your temps?

If that is ok,... maybe wrong soil/ph...

Peace and love,

When you start out you should have a moist soil. So the first week you shouldn't have to water. The pant must grow a good rootsystem. This will allow it to feed itself and shorten your growing period. So do not water near the stem but make the plant create roots in search of water.

In the first weeks you do not need any fertilizers. The soil should contain enough stuff to help it past the first few weeks. too much ferts will offset your pH balance. The soil will likely become too acid. What you read is correct. A month seems reasonable.

I would wait and see how the plant develops. If this yellowing persists flush the soil and a pH check is a must in these cases. Growing is not so much a matter of green thumbs but something around information. The plant gives information and all we need to do is learn how to interpret it.

If your going to plant in a soil that has ferts in it make sure it's very light because the ferts can kill the seedlings. Seedlings really don't need nothing for the first two weeks of growth but some strains require a light feeding sooner. I had some Nirvana White Widows that started yellowing in the first week. In your case the yellowing is probally from being over ferted. Your best bet would be to plant seedlings in a mix with nothing. If they start yellowing then they need food. Make sure you give them a very light dose or you can kill them. More phosphorus is good because it encourages root development. Something like 2-4-2 would be good.

i would say if you dont give it a good lil flush of just ph'd water you can loose them to nute burn you are feeding a seedling that has enough energy stored to grow until at least the 2 set of true leaves...give regular ph'd water until it comes out the bottom a descent amount..

Thanks for the information, much appreciated. I will deffinitely ditch the pellet fertilizer. Plant seems to be growing fine, just a little yellow. wish the stem was coming in stronger. It's shooting up really fast.

I did a flush... Those two small leaves the sprout from the seedling (what are those called?) ... those were turning yellow and underneath them they had tiny rust color spots. The stem was also looking a little yellow at the bottom and the plant was starting to tilt to one side... Maybe it'll make it. Also, the water was draining slower than an old man's clogged toilet. :badday: And since seedbay is gone, I don't know where to get anymore frickin' seeds.

Another thing new growers do is overtreat them when there are signs of trouble. Don't start correcting problems until you know pretty sure what to do. Which is hard cause they are your babies :)
