I worked for forty five years as a janitor , laborer and a factory worker , I did not grow weed to survive , just to smoke and share like some Waikiki,s from Covelo were doing at the last High Times event , I will be so frigging glad when weed is legal , three generations of my family have suffered because of all this cops and robbers crap , the fall in Cali is " the killing Time " .
Well, you obviously can't take the money out of banking. OTOH, legalization threatens to take the money out of marijuana, at least for current suppliers. That's what the naysaying in the community is all about- growers want it to be legal, but they want to keep the money in it, which is a contradiction in terms, an oxymoron. They want to be able to market a legal commodity at what really are black market prices, keep their piece of the action.
Tobacco, for example, is a very labor intensive crop. Growers currently get $2/lb, cut, bundled & delivered to processors. It's unrealistic to think that marijuana growers would get much more in a truly legal market. Tobacco farmers don't defend their crops with gunfire, simply because it's not worth that much money & because nobody wants to steal it, at least not enough of it to matter.
As it is, the "home defenders" in Fresno will likely end up in worse shape, a lot worse shape than if they just helped the rippers load their shit & clear out. But they kept their macho pride, killed a couple of assholes, & they'll have solid rep in the Joint when they get there. That means it's all worth it, right?

I have the 2nd fastest compound bow in the world. I never sleep either, too much anxiety and an endless thought train. It's no shotgun but with my 6 outdoor dogs and peacocks for alerting me. You won't get anywhere close. You won't see me or hear me either. I was trained native ways and can run through my woods and all around my property as quiet as a fox. It's no firearm, but I am a beyond deadly shot and I feel safe. I have 3 bows all loaded with arrows and stash spots for more ammo all around. I love archery though. I have shot from every angle of my property. Through Windows outside 80 yards. Bring it. My dogs will get you first though.
So you feel that $22.00/grams, $616.00/oz, $9856.00/lb that is being charged to recreational customers in Washington state is somehow better than black market prices?
Or the high prices in CO plus a 25% tax on top of the purchase is better than a black market price

I'd seriously rather have the option to grow my own, or make my purchases from the black market than pay anal rape prices for weed grown by people that are in it for the money only aspect who will grow subpar pot just because they can and a stupid consumer will buy it without realizing they are being taken advantage of.. Example-60 day SFV compared to 75 day SFV because they can squeeze in another grow/year.

WA is a fucked up mess atm, no doubt. That's because their legalization scheme is just state sponsored crony capitalism, monopoly. Growing your own is *not* a legal option. Licensing is not provided on a "must issue" basis as in CO.

Only the strong will survive as retail growers in CO. They'll do that by being able to accept much lower prices for given quality than their less efficient competitors. What do you do when the guy down the street starts selling $20 eighths & you've been charging $30 for weed of the same quality? You cut your price to $20. What happens when you, as a retailer, can buy wholesale weed of a given quality cheaper than you can grow it with no headaches? You change your business model. What do you do as a grower who can't show a profit against your competitors? You sell the inventory at a loss, get out of the business.
Gonna be a lot of broken dreams here in CO over the next few years. Growers will need to be good at it, have strong reserves & deep pockets to weather the storm.

Like I said, CO isn't WA. It's apples & aardvarks, both beginning with the letter "A".
I expect the price of weed to take a big tumble in CO. When this speculative bubble pops, lots of growers will have to clear the inventory & escape if they can't ride out a market glut for awhile. Don't be the guy who needs $1500/lb for all he can grow mid grade to keep the doors open.

All that blue sky? Denver is like that in the winter. Some of the nicest days happen right before we get pounded by by a swirling Albuquerque low. The wind shifts out of the northeast & there's a wall of towering grey clouds bearing down from that direction. The temperature can drop 40 degrees in an hour, snow blowing sideways up to your knees before you know it. It can go to Hell in a hurry.
I doubt that marijuana growing will turn out to be much different.
If I was the only person that could get to the gun then I wouldn't lock 2 or 3 either. But that's not the case so keeping a handgun in a lockbox that takes a few button pushes to get it out works. Less than two seconds to get it out. Keeping more than one around helps as well, but I understand your point.

I'm 12 hours and 2 states away from Denver, and they have been importing here for years. I have even seen it still in the original dispensary packaging. Pretty funny actually, being someone whom has never set foot in a dispensary.

You got to figure the wholesale prices are going to be rock bottom, seeing as how everyone is looking to cash in big time. I mean if prices are high you can't add too much tax on top of it, otherwise the consumer will keep looking to the black market. Then the store owners have a bunch of licensing and regulations driving up their bottom-line plus the usual expense any business faces and of course they want to cash in handsomely on this new market. The only way any of that can realistically happen is if the wholesale prices are dirt cheap. To the point a wholesale grower would need to think in terms of tons rather then pounds when thinking about his harvest. All these people figuring they can grow a few pounds and make thousands are in for a rude awakening.
As for guns and growing the problem is the possession of a gun at an illegal grow site is an additional Federal offense and adds an automatic 5 years on top of any local charges, plus it puts it in the Federal courts and of course for the Feds marijuana is still illegal regardless of what the state laws may say. The perception in the Federal courts is that the grower will use the guns against law enforcement thereby acknowledging that they know what they're doing is still illegal. Of course the Feds don't want you to have guns because they might get shot if they decide to stop letting the states experiment with legalization. Which all gets back to the fact that really the movement is spinning it's wheels until the Feds reschedule marijuana by recognizing it's medical value and additionally they make it totally up to the states as to whether it's legal for medical or recreational or even if they choose to leave it illegal.

I don't buy herb (usually), but from what i've heard it's the same price as local. Otherwise they could never get rid of it.
