1st grow (in 5 years)--Original Haze x Skunk 1 & Bagseed

Hey everyone!

So this will be my new grow. My first in about 5 years! I'd gotten out of growing and was just a plain smoker.

A few weeks ago, a buddy of mine pulls me into his room, and shows me 5 different packages of seeds that were sent to his house for some reason. He never paid for them, never asked for them or anything. He, knowing that I'd grown before, invited me to grow the plants for him. The strains he got were White Russian, Original Haze x Skunk #1, Bubblicious, White Satin, and some seeds from Nirvana, I forget the strain.

I plan on eventually getting to the point where I can have a mother or two and clones. I want to get to the point where I always have plants that are flowering so I can harvest every couple months, hehe. But that'll take time and I have plenty of experience to gain. I'm sure I'll be learning from the best here.

Soooo that's where we are now. We've decided to grow the Haze x Skunk first. I've also got some bag seed from some pretty good regs (oxymoron?).

I used Scott's soil first just because it was readily available to me, and cheap. First transplants, I'll begin using FF's Ocean Forest.

Nutes will be Grow Big and Big Bloom from FF.

Lighting is 8 27-watt CFL's for seedling/veg and 400 watt HPS for flowering. I plan on getting a MH/HPS 400-watt system from HTG Supply very soon though, and in that case I'd put them under the MH for veg, HPS for flowering. However I do plan on using the CFL's at all times for supplemental lighting.

The bag seed were the first to germinate, and actually are the only to germinate so far. I have 4 plants from bag seed. I started germinating on the 9th so it's been almost a week and the Haze x Skunk seeds aren't germinating! Patience is a virtue though, lol.

Anyways, I'll attach a few photos a little bit later. Not much going on right now, so not many interesting pics that I can post. I know, I know, not much to see, a long book of a post, so I won't expect many replies. But this is just as much a log as it is a presentation of my grow to you good folks @ IC. I'll be looking forward to the learning experience and the tips and advice I'll get from you guys.

Thanks again, and welcome to my grow

@TheBEAK: thanks for the checkin' in man :rasta:

Ok guys so I've got some pics to post now. These are all day 2 pics (counting from when the seedlings broke ground), and as I said earlier, these are all from bagseed. The damn Original Haze x Skunk 1 hasn't germ'd yet! :badday:

Oh, and I apologize in advance for the picture qualtiy. Gotta use my cellphone until I can borrow someone's camera.

Here is my setup so far. Kinda just threw things together b/c I'm on somewhat of a budget for right now, so excuse the mess ;)
entirecloset1.jpg

Here is Plant 1. 1st to be planted, 1st to break ground.
Seedling1a.jpg

Here is Plant 3. 3rd to be planted, 2nd to break ground and as of today, she's also the tallest.
Seedling2a.jpg

Plants 1 & 3 (I GOTTA NAME THEM!)
Seedling12.jpg

This is kinda hard to see, but this is Plant 2. It still had it's shell on when I got home today and noticed it had broke ground. So I gently took it off. Hopefully she opens up overnight.

After I removed the shell

Again, thanks for taking a look. And sorry for the quality!

Day 4

Not much happened in the last couple days. The seedlings are starting to hit their growth spurt.

Found some seeds in this bag for FIRE mids that I was given. It's an upper, a heady high. I heard in one of the threads around here that mids are basically great strains that were grown like shit. So hopefully I can turn these mid seeds in to KB ;)

Also, I wanted to ask you guys if you had any ideas about a reflector I can make for my 4-bulb CFL contraptions. Here's a pic:
454294-17-08e-med.JPG

I plan to buy another one for a total of three of these. I was thinking maybe some cardboard covered in aluminum foil or mylar would work kinda well. Any other suggestions would be welcome ;)

Here are the mids seeds that I'm germinating. I had 8 total, put 4 down to germinate and saving 4 others.

Here is the little one that I had to pull the seed cover off of (Plant #2). Looks like she's made a full recovery.
454294-17-08b-med.JPG

Here is Plant #1, looks like the best of the crop so far.
454294-17-08d-med.JPG

Here is Plant #3. I wish I had a better camera because I see some discoloration on the leaves that aren't apparent in this pic. Doesn't look like nute burn or heat damage so I'm not to worried though.

And here's all 3 plants that've sprouted.

Thanks in advance for checking out my grow

Hey doja
thats quite the contraption! I made a reflector out of cardboard and tinfoil once and that worked good.
just made a slit folded it on itself stapled covered in tinfoil and volia! a reflector!
worked for me w/2 cfl's should work w/4.
Best of luck! JS

Thanks man, I'm going to put this to work over the weekend.

Quick question, does anyone think the pots I've used are too large for the seedlings? I don't think it's a big deal, but in my previous grow I started in styrofoam cups and I see a lot of people here do the same.

Well the larger they are, the bigger the risk of overwatering becomes. I think you'll be fine with that size, if you just keep an eye on them and let them dry out just a little in between waterings. And be careful not to soak the soil when you water.
It's also a good idea to mix some perlite into the soil, to get some air to the roots.

Yeah I'll be good on overwatering, I'm very patient with that, lol. So far, this is Day 5 and I haven't watered any plant since I planted them. The soil on top is still pretty damp so I'm just letting nature take it's course, haha.

Yeahhhh I've always heard of mixing perlite with the soil. I think I'll do that when I eventually transplant. Is this usually available only at hydro stores and grow shops? I ask b/c I don't remember seeing it at Home Depot/Walmart/Lowe's (I also wasn't actively looking for it either, so I wouldn't know, even if I CAN find it in those stores, haha).

Anyways, thanks for the advice

So I came home to a surprise! One of my OHxS1 seeds finally sprouted. I used the "crack" method after being frustrated for several days with the seed in the the paper towel. I planted it last night and I come home from work today to see a 1cm high seedling :jump:

I also found 2 of the mids bagseed split, so I planted these as well

and just a couple mini-garden pics:

:rasta:

Doja- you can get perlite at any of those places,
wal-mart carrys schultz brand $3/8qts in a blue bag.
congrats on the "skunky haze" :) JS

You didn't mention grow space but with a 400 I'm figuring it's limited. If O*Haze is anything like T*Haze (17+ week flower period) you'll want to get it under 12/12 ASAP.

Nice start

@GDB: Thanks bro, glad you came to check it out :rasta:

@Jochsmokes: Thanks for the info man. I've been there so many times and never really looked for it. I've read about a good way to mix it, but I forgot the ratio. What ratio do you use?

@FreezerBoy: Hey thanks for checkin' me out man. Yeah I read a few threads about OHxSk#1 grows and the flowering time pushes it to the limit! lol (somewhere between 12-15 weeks). Thanks for the advice :smoke:

Just a mini-update here. 2 more OHxSk#1 seeds germinated, so I planted them. Also 1 more midgrade seed germ'd so I now have another one of those. So I now have 10 plants in total (4 schwag, 3 mids & 3 OHxSK#1).

Here's a pic of the mids that I got those seeds from. It's a nice, heady smoke with minimal body high. The buds are very light green (my phone camera doesn't do it justice) with some noticeable red hairs. This is the infamous "Zona" mids that we get around here (some people assume it's from AZ):

I'm hoping to come back to this pic in a few months and compare these mids to the stuff I grew from them. Thanks again everyone for checkin' me out :rasta:

Happy 4/20!
I probably use too much perlite if there is such a thing?
In my pro-mix remix i use 25-30%
Then i put a little in the bottom of the pots for good drainge.
THEN i put some more on top to prevent fungus knats and such.
But thats just me and i'm just out to have a good time not give myself a headache crunchin #'s.
I like to keep it easy:) JS

Cool...yeah I was searching around the forums and I came up with this mix:

65% Ocean Forest
25% Perlite
10% worm castings
Add 2tbs/gal dolomite lime

Sounds good to me, and I'll be using Grow Big, Big Bloom, and Tiger Bloom. One question I do have though is, how do you guys go about mixing it? I mean, do you just throw it all into one pot and try to stir it with something?

Yeahhhhh I never did mention that huh? Lol and my bad I skimmed over the part where you asked me the size last time. The closet size is roughly 52"x 24" (approx 4ft x 2ft). The CFLs are working out pretty great right now. I may not wait until flowering to get the 400w HPS in there though because I have so many plants. By time they're all in veg I might have some lighting issues.

@KB: Thanks for checking out my grow man. And trust, I'll definitely be praying for those pistils, lol.

Nothing much new to add except a few new sprouts and also some close-up pics of the plant with issues that I talked about before. I got a couple pics of better quality than last time, but still, with the same camera phone, ergo blurriness.

So anyways, here's the plant. Along with being kinda wavy/curvy, this plant was very odd yellowish markings on it. Doesn't look like nute burn, and I'm almost positive it's not insect damage (search turned up nothing and none of the other plants show similar issues). I'm thinking I may chalk this up to genetics/mutation, seeing as this plant is from schwag seed.

Other than that, I just have a few progress pics to show you:

Here is my biggest and strongest plant so far (schwag seed).

Mids on the left, OHxSk#1 on the right.

And here's my entire garden.

Woke up this morning to find the last two seeds sprouted (2 OHxSk#1 seeds). It's weird b/c before I went to bed, there was no signs of life in either cup. I wake up to see 2 plants 1-3cm tall, meaning they grew that much within 8 hrs! It's crazy that they can grow so fast, lol. Fascinating. Anyways, no pics b/c it'd really just be more of the same. Just wanted to spread the news that I now have all 10 plants above ground

Just wanted to run this past you guys. I see roots coming out of the drainage holes, but this plant is farrrr from outgrowing it's pot. Is this ok? I also notice the tips of this plant drooping, which I thought usually indicates root bound but I really doubt that this is the case. Any wisdom?

Can't tell to much from the picture myself but the plant looks like it might need water, the plant is growing well have you started feeding it yet? Generally around week 1-2 I start to introduce small amounts of nutes to my plants. On the larger older ones like that one maybe start with a 25% strength dosage of nutes with your watering if your not already. Also make sure your testing your pH before giving it to your plants, this is something I neglected at first when I started growing but I was giving my plants really alkaline water and after I corrected my plants seemed to do a lot better.

EDIT: I don't think roots visible at the bottom means root bound, When you pop the plant out and the roots are going up and down the side of the container your probably getting there.
