13 and marijuana, what's the connection?

I was recently watching a documentary about the hells' angels. I noticed a patch of just the # 13 and asked some of the biker bro's what it meant. They said it was a reference to pot. Anybody have any historic facts about how this came about?

i remember what the 13 meant, it just means "M" is the 13th letter of the alphabet.
i forgot what it represent though... i guess it just means you toke.

About 40+ years ago, when I was just a kid, the Hell's Angel's wore the 13 patch on thier leather jackets. It does mean the 13th letter of the alphabet...M..which stands for marijuana.This is the meaning of my handle and the patch I saw when I was a kid, is where I got it from. I'm not saying M doesn't stand for motorcycles. I have no idea. but believe me its not far out the loop to brag that you killed someone.

My impression thus far of HA is that when it comes to liability stuff, they try to run a pretty clean ship, Motaco. Excess negative advertising doesn't make life smooth for those who want life to be smooth.

They're constantly under the eye of the feds.

That's my 'subjective take' on it.

yes, it did stand for mj originally, but when you got your patch, it was one that came with everything. those who didnt smoke, took on the motorcycle explanation. and old fart, i was there doing it.
