Sleepy/ LED_girl: Thanks for the test info, glad to see the LEDs are working so well. I'll be setting up a TAG system with about 30 126w LEDs in the near future, still perfecting the TAG nutrient schedule with 600w bulbs.

Here's a product that requires more upfront cost than a heater but would probably be a lot more effective and flexible. I'd been told is that it's the root zone temp that needs to be kept up not ambient but led girl et al please feel free to chime in. For instance, in these hydro set ups, the roots are being heated passively. Anyway, here's a link to them:

It says the thermostat kicks on at 74 degrees, that might be a little to hot.
The root zone should not exceed about 68 degrees.

Hey Sleepy just checking in, looking good as usual, they are looking mighty fine.
You know skip brought up a point about failing led grows because lack of compensation for temperature, right after sleepy mentioned adding 1300-1500w heater. And I think to myself, So to compensate you have to add a 1000w heater? The problem here for me is about how much you are actually saving. For example our buddy sleepy here is doing a comparison between a 400w and 126w led. But if you add the 1000 plus watts worth of heater to compensate for temperature, how much are you "really" saving(Which is one of the huge selling points). Now I do think leds have their place, mostly for veg, because most have a smaller space to veg in, and as suplemental lights where tube flourescents are currently used. I don't know I'm stoned and rambling, sorry to come off anti-led or devils advocate, because really I'm not, not at all, I've been watching them develop and have always been interested am surely looking forward to adding one to my arsenal of growing equipment even more so as the months and years go by, just not to replace my primary flowering light. Maybe during the summer for a smaller indoor harvest to avoid using ac meanwhile the outdoor stuff goes boom. I don't know, like I said, stoned

The need for the heater will depend on the ambient temperature of the grow room, of course. My NYC apartment is always hot this time of year (I don't control the heat and leave the window open all winter!), so I would not need a heater. Also, unless he has the heater on high, it is probably using less than 1000 watts.

Yes, and with a well insulated room we can easily keep 180+ plants at 75-80 degrees with one small heater even when the temp drops below zero. That would make for a pretty low watt to plant ratio with the LED lights.

I am not a botanist by any stretch but I think the 68 is for your hydro res. That is to keep (bad) microbial activity to a minimum. In a soil or soilless mix you should have sufficient beneficial microbes and fungi to keep that all under cotrol and the plants would benefit greatly from a temperature of up to 80 - just what I've heard.
If memory serves, Sleepy has the same issue I do, the current cold snap has brought unexpected (and transient) cold temperatures. I brought my cabinet indoors and that ended my problem by simply replanting and starting over. Lamentable, but no bigger an inconvenience than those anybody else has suffered. When the cold snap ends the temps here will return to the mid-70s and we will be back to paying air-conditioning bills.
