250W CFL DWC Chronic SCROG Grow

Hey there! After a few unseccessful attempts to get my homemade DWC and Rubbermaid grow box to work, I think I finally have it right.

So, here goes:

Per Red Greenery's instructions, I built a Rubbermaid grow box and my own DWC contraption. I'll post a schematic of the DWC when I'm more rested *yawns*.

3 weeks ago, I started 2 Chronic seeds from Serious Seeds in peat pellets under 2 27W CFL's in a humidity dome. Once they got big enough, I moved them into net pots filled with Hydroton and put them in the DWC. The DWC holds just over 3.5 litres/ 1.75 gallons. I put in pH Down and 5 milliliters (1 teaspoon) of Hygrozyme per 4 litres (1 gallon). The pH was down around 5.5 or 6. I started having problems with my C13 grow (see sig for link) in part due to the low pH.

I switched the water to the Hygrozyme and Pure Blend Pro Grow 3-1.5-4, with a dosage of 7 milliliters (1.5 teaspoons) per 4 litres (1 gallon) of water.

Right now, there are two 27W CFL's directly over each of the seedlings. The lights are 2-3 inches away from the seedlings.

As the plants grow, I'm going to add two more CFL's and change all the bulbs to 42W bulbs for a total of 252 Watts. I also have a SCROG ready to train the plants.

Right now, I am hoping for one male and one female. That way I get a bunch of Chronic seeds and some free herb, too. If I get 2 females, I get a bunch of free herb! At worst, if I get 2 males, I can harvest the pollen, store it, and selectively pollinate female buds in subsequent grows.

The last 3 weeks, the seedlings haven't budged an inch. In the last 24 hours, they have almost doubled in size. And this was before I changed the water with the new nutrients!

For now, here are some pics of the setup:

Good start - I'm gonna watch this grow.

Congrats, and good luck

Okay, I'm totally confused. I switched to six 40W CFL bulbs over a week ago and the plants haven't grown; they've stayed at 12 centimeters/ 5 inches since then. The CFL's are 12" away from the plants; I cannot prop them up any higher to get them close the the lights.

I am using Botanicare's 3-1.5-4 nutes for Hydro and upped the dosage today to 15 mL/4 litres.

pH is around 6.

The leaves are showing a magnesium or calcium deficiency. Should I do anything else?

Today I changed the water and added my regular nutes along with a bit of pH Down to reduce pH by .5. I also got some Cal-Mag and added that to the water.

The plants have grown a bit since the last change of water. here are the pics for today:

It's taken a bit longer than I would have liked, but the girls are getting bigger! I switched them to 12/12 yesterday and put on a screen. They are big and supple enough that I was able to train them immediately, filling the screen.

krusty those are great looking root masses u have there. looking great bro
keep it growing green!!!

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. That root porn is awesome, innit?

I'll crap my pants if I get 4 ounces out of this grow; I'm conservatively expecting 2 ounces.

hey Berry, you don't get any weird/adverse effects from taking the screen out once stretch is over?

Update!

Update!

Well, it's been a while, and some things have changed.

My only plant in my C13 turned out to be a male, so I moved my homemade DWC from the Rubbermaid to the C13 and put it under the 400W HPS.

I am now in week 4 of flowering and things are coming along nicely.

I have one female and one male, so I'm going to get a ton of seeds.

The male has been throwing around a ton of pollen the last few days. In fact, it's EVERYWHERE in the cab.

This grow will be for seed, not for weed. Now, I won't have to pay any money for more quality seeds for any other grows!

I'll have to clean it out really well after this grow to avoid pollination in subsequent grows.

Here's my dilemma, though:

I want to chop the male to allow more room/light for the female to grow. Will the pollenation have occurred by now, so I can chop the male? What if I just cut it back by half?

Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure:

Uh-oh...

Uh-oh...

Okay, here I am on Week 5 of flowering and the leaves are turning very pale yellow and they are also browning.

Is this caused by a deficiency, burn, fungus, or something else? The light is about 18" away from the tops.

I've kept the male alive, although I pruned it to half its height and width.

Airflow has been somewhat restricted the last week (I drape a curtain over the C13 during its dark period for added protection from light leaks and I sometimes forget to remove it before it starts its light cycle when the blower turns on).

Any ideas on what it is? Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Interesting...

Interesting...

Well,

Things are moving along rather nicely. At 5 weeks in flower, now, and she is growing right along.

I switched to 30mL/gallon (fuck, it's confusing having to convert from metric) of PDP Bloom and 10mL/gallon of Cal-Mag. Everything is still yellow, but it's still coming along. Seeds should still be plentiful, despite the heat and limited root space.

Check the pics. Again, remember, I am going for seed, not for weed.

More seed now=less bud now. BUT,

More seed now=less weed now=LOTS more bud later :D hehe

Wow, fast response!

I'm guessing either temps or nute burn. 3 weeks left prior to harvest. I'm expecting to harvest 2 ounces of medium-grade, speedy, short-duration type weed, because it will be immature!

Again, I'm looking to grow just long enough for mature seeds, so I can grow a LOT of F2 Chronic seeds. I will get weed, but it will be of relatively average strength. If it's better, then that's an unexpected plus.

yo'uve left the males in there for too long, this means your going to have MANY MANY immature seeds at harvest time. if you wait for them all to ripen then your buds gonna be a naff smoke.
if u had polinated just one top cola you would have enough seeds for years of subsequent grows and have other buds which are a nice smoke and seed free.

i think your gonna be shocked how many seeds your gonna have, just one fully polinated cola is going to have hundreds of seeds!!

actually, i think you should remove the males now, you need polination to stop and the plant to get on with finishing up!

Here is something I just realized: there is absolutely NO smell whatsoever. Weird! I haven't used the carbon scrubber at all. As I type this, I am in the same room as the grow and there is no smell at all.

Is this a common trait for Chronic?
