9 C99 in Coco

I just got a new digital camera for christmas early so finally I can put up a grow journal. This is my second grow, my previous one was of 9 Sensi Star, in conditions I'm too embarassed to share.

My Setup:

4'x4'x7' HydroHut Orginial - modded to a 6" flange (4" was just not cutting it)
1kw HPS light with 6" Cool Sun Reflector
Vortex In-line 449CFM fan
3 Gallon square pots (not filled all the way)
2 50l bags of B`Cuzz coco - (not soaked... my first mistake)
1 42.5L bag of Coco, perlite, and some soil additives (I will get the name and ingredients once I go back to the hydro store.... I threw away the bag)
3 part Cutting Edge Solution nutrients ( I maybe switching these over to coco nutes now having read and experienced P, K, Ca, and Mg problems)
6" desk fan, non-ocsillating
6" ocsillating fan
9 C99 clones from Harborside Health Center ( They were listed in the strain book as Nirvana seedbank, but I'm guessing its Gypsy Nirvana )

I am handwatering every day right now I'm trying for about 15- 20% runoff. As I can pick up a book about drip systems I am switching to a system with a dripper or two per pot on top that goes to waste, a top-fed run to waste system?

I'm using 1/2 strength on the nutes with 2.5ml per gallon of Cal-Mag Plus. 11/16 I fed them one cup of OrganicsAlive directly and didn't water them the previous day in order to allow the bacteria and fungi to grow and not get flushed out.

One out of the 9 clones almost died because of the light being to close the first 2 days but just barely pulled through, but after pulling through lagged in growth, but has now almost caught up (Day 8 of flowering).

I tried my hand at some LST training in the begining veg, but many pulled up their stakes and easily pull out strings with tape.

Day 12 of Veg

Day 12 of Veg

Well I decided to train 2 more on day 11, they responded the best to it so far, although this is my first time training. I really like how second row all the way to the right came out. I think there are going to be some nice strong branches formed. The one just left to it came out well as well, very even but only 1 branch is really thriving.

I also got an ocsillating fan from bedbathbeyond for like $12... works fairly well even though it was a bitch to get it to bend to the angle I need and ocsillate without running into the side.

It's been cold here so the temperature has been easy to keep stable between 75- 81 and the humidity at 50 - 60%.

The last plant all the way in the back hardly has grown. I can tell that its the worst burned and it almost didn't make it when I brought it home. I wonder whats up with it.

I'm going to go to the local hydro store and get some CalMag. Hopefully I will pick up some OrganicsAlive today too.

The plants were fighting serious salt build up from me not washing out the coco with cal mag before use. I was watering them everyday with just Nitrogen, calicium, and magnisium and getting about 40 -50% run off trying to flush out the P and K

Day 15 of Veg

Day 15 of Veg

They have exploded with growth! At first I was thinking how can it get much faster but I was comparing the day 12 pictures from day 15 pictures and I was amazed.

I finally got some Cal-Mag yesterday and since then I've noticed a huge difference. I've also upped their feeding strength today as well I hope they respond well.

The runt plant in the back wasn't growing for so long, I couldn't figure it out, but the other day I pinched off its sickly yellow leaf its had the entire time and since its grown so much too.

I'm going to go into flowering in about 3 more days and I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for additives specifically for coco for flowering?

Day 6 of Flowering

Day 6 of Flowering

I switched over to flowering on Nov 16th, so this is the 6th day of flowering. They have grown so much. They blew up with growth; however, some are showing the "claw." So it's probably time for a good flush. Also some of the biggest/oldest fan leaves appear to be turning a shade of orange, I tried to get a picture of it here but the colors are off. Also there has been some really weird leaf damage, I'm not sure if its the wind in my box or pests.

The runt of the group has almost caught up to the other plants. It's the same size just the stems are thinner and the foilage is less thick. It's been getting the same amount of nutes and water as the rest and seems to be thriving on it. I'm considering upping the nute strength becaues of this. Would it be wise to up it?

Also does anyone have any recommendations as far as additives for flowering go, currently I'm just using Cutting Edge Soltuion nutes with Cal-Mag Plus

what enzymes exactly? I've heard from Bonecarver that vitazyme was the additive that he thinks boosted his plants the most but I can't seem to find a US distributer or an alike product.

The clones at Harborside are fairly reliable, I went and got mine 9 which were huge clones and a friend of mine went and got 9 of 3 different strains and every clone is in good health with no pest or disease problems so far. Also the staff was very friendly and one employee said that he had personally seen alot of the grows that these clones came from. All around great experience, classy joint.

In the coco grower's thread there are good suggestions....I'd go with what Bonecarver suggests...if you can find it...his plants look pretty darn good

I use the Botanicare nute line....as for addtives...Sweet and Liquid Karma....I'm going to experiment with Hydroplex....also using Cal Mag Plus and Silica Blast....

I know Bonecarver uses canna nutes....but not sure on the additives...whatever it is it's working well for him

I use Cannazyme (enzyme)...but am going back to Hygrozyme because I want to run SM-90....

peace

Thanks for the info VT I'm gonna check out Sweet and Liquid Karma as well as Cannazyme and Rhizotonic, but I'm poor so I can probably only afford one.

Something very unfortunate has come about and I won't be able to turn on the light for a portion of the day
If I leave my plants in darkness for 16 - 18 hours will they be okay?

Also, I pruned the runt and I noticed that now its the tallest plant of the bunch. Is it too late to prune? Will I just be cutting off future bud sites that could help or should I break out the scissors and give em all haircuts?

c99 is resilient...no worries on the light issue....better to leave the lights off too long...than have the lights come on early....plus it's better that it happens during stretch...

It's not too late to prune....I'd suggest that you not prune after they start making buds....prune and train during stretch...so maybe another week or so since you're in week 1

good luck

Day 10 of Flowering

Day 10 of Flowering

Well I upped the nute strength on them and am slowly switching from veg to flowering nutes. They're responding fairly well but occasionally show the claw. I'm gonna get some Cannazyme or Rhizotonic or both to help with that. Also as suggested by -VT- (thx) I'm going to get Liquid Karma and start using it. Should I use it every time I water?

Also, I double potted the pots because pouring off the run-off everytime I watered was incredibly laborious and tedious, now I only need to do it every 3rd time. I'm planning on getting some sort of plastic tub or sheet for the bottom and letting the run off naturally drain into something.

Thirdly, I decided these plants definitely need some more training so I tied down tops that were uneven. I had the worst time doing this, at first I was using fishing line and scotch tape but the line kept slipping through the tape, so I switched some over to shoelaces and eletrical tape and others just fishing line and electrical tape.

OH YA! I almost forgot, now when I enter the room I'm welcomed by the wonderful fragrances of honey, herbs, and tomato... almost time for a filter. :sasmokin:

I limitedly pruned the four front ones of the lowest bud sites but left all leaves and branches intact and didn't remove any budsites that were more than 1/3 to a 1/2 up the plant. THe one I pruned earlier wasn't actually the runt so the change wasn't as dramatic as I thought; however, the earlier pruned plant is the tallest and has the most even canopy with 5 to 6 equal budsites.

The last lesson I learned also is how to take proper pictures, close up, and in hps light with the camera so these came out glamorous and I didn't even have to adjust the colors.

I need to set up a drip system anyone have any suggestions as for a setup that would work for me?
I waiting on a book from the library to make a plan of a drip system that runs to waste, but I was wondering if anyone could give me the general idea of what I'm looking at in terms of supplies needed, the cost, and time invovled in setting up.
Also will it likely work 100% the first time or should I test it a few times before implementing it?
Lastly, lets say each plant gets approx. 6 cups of water everyday at once, if I switch to a drip system should I water like 2 cups of water 3 times a day or is there another way to figure out how much water/how often they need? Thanks

The run to waste I will design will have two reservoirs....
1) Supply rez....it will house the nutes and feed the buckets.....still deciding on how I'll run the supply...either with a raindrip fitting or 1/2" poly with 1/4" holes punched for bucket feed lines...
2) Waste rez....the buckets will be linked to this waste rez....when I handwater OR drip feed....the waste drains to a common "waste rez".....

Million ways to do the buckets....I may use bags and place the bags in a netbasket...allowing runoff to drain to the "outer buckets"....from there the waste drains to ther waste rez, as previously mentioned.....

Gotta have fat pumps for drip feed....I have a 850gph...will be acquiring something more powerful though....

It's cool because I can customize my setup....for example....I can have more than one "supply rez"....this would be handy for multi-strain runs...and in my case I stagger plants....so I could have a rez for youngins' in stretch...and another for flowering ladies....

Sorry for the verbose post....I will be covering all of this with pics in my thread

Nice pics...those plants look great

good luck

^^^^ Gave you rep earlier in the thread -VT-, good suggestion on multi rez setup for multi strain/stagger run. Gaiusmarius does the same thing

B'cuzz Coco is supposed to be one of the best since it is pre-conditioned just like the Canna coco. You should not need to soak it.

Atami B'Cuzz Coco Fiber
Excellent for retaining water and increasing air capacity, coconut husk fiber is fast becoming the new alternative in hydroponic growing media. Atami's brand of coco fiber comes ready to use, and therefore requires no soaking or Ph balancing.

I ran into a similar problem the first time using Canna Coco and thought that the answer was to add Cal/Mag. Turns out after talking to a Canna rep that I was using too much caution. They told me not to worry about using the nutes at full strength on small plants. Coco is not like Hydro, the plants take the nutrients out of it as needed. Sure enough I brought it up to full strength per thier card and they grew like champs.

This is one of my Coco girls ina 5 gal bucket:

Growing with Coco is a dream. Not as fast as Hydro, but when auto watering drain to waste it practicaly runs itself. No reservoir maintnance, no PH adjustments, kinda boring but in a relaxing way.

Things are looking great. Those girls will start budding up real soon. Then you will have to hold yourself back from sampling one of their beautiful buds. Well at least I have to anyways.

On the lost overgrow strainguide I read that C99 should be cloned a couple of times in order to get the best results.

...this strain really needs to be flowered from cuttings, as it needs time to mature. I found it took about 3 cutting times to get the best out of it, or around 9 months time of growing in the vegetative stage.

Since you are growing clones, you will have great results I am sure.

Keep us updated.

I'm new to coco as well...amazed by how fast it moves once things get going! I've also been thinking about picking up some C99 at Harborside; all the qualities I like in an indica, but it's a sativa. Must try!

Tagging your grow.

I went to try to buy Cannazyme and the local hydro shop does carry Canna brand so they suggested Hygrozyme. They said it was the best but alot of the time I think they're full of shit it was $37 for 1L way too expensive. Oh well, I put it in with my nutrients today 5ml per gallon.

BULLSHIT! Flush the shit out of it before you use it! Do not screw up like I did and assume it is pre flushed! If ya don't want to flush it, then so be it.

what sets Hygrozyme apart is the lack of Bacteria...I cannot use Cannazyme in conjunction with SM-90...and I need to run SM-90....Hygrozyme can be used with products that slay bacteria, i.e. h2o2
