Recently browsing through threads bored outta my mind I realized one thing, most of you pay waaay to much for your HID lights. Alot of hydro shop owners post here and there, and there are also friends of these shops floating around. I notice whenever someone asks about wiring up one of their own ballasts they are continually discouraged from purchasing such a product.

I recently needed to get a new ballast and light. A 1000 watt HPS to be exact. It came partially pre-wired and I had to finish it. I have no electrical experience what-so-ever. It came with wiring directions but it was a little hard for me to read but I eventually figured it out. After I had it up and running, I researched it a bit more and found easy to read color pictures that a 4 year old could figure out. If you could build your own bubbling bucket, you could wire this ballast with your eyes shut. To all the people who recommended against it, fuck you. I coulda saved probably over $400 if I only hadn't listened.

Point your browsers to www.1000bulbs.com and check out the ballast pricing, a 1000 watt HPS ballast is $110, a 1000 watt bulb is $39. With all these price gouging hydro shops selling their wares for $300-$350 +shipping (total $350-$400) You can save yourself over $200 friggen dollars like I did. My ballast is working fantastic, better then my old name brand one which I paid over double for. I'm going to save myself hunderds of dollars in bulbs as well. I notice NO difference in my 1000 watt bulb I purchased from there and my son agro as far as yeild is concerned.

I'll also mention security. This isn't a hydro shop. It's a light shop. I would assume it would be less of a target then a hydro shop.

I apologize if I sound a bit harsh in this post. I find myself lied too and I feel as if I was basically ripped off in the past. I've decided I would like to share this information and source to save anyone else in the market some time and money.

Do you need a metal case for the ballast? Was there anything else that you needed to make the kit complete? (wiring, etc.) That police auction site rocks! I would never order grow equipment from there though. Ya gotta have some balls and a safe addy for that one.

Wireing ballasts are easy. Its really a simple circuit really.I agree if you can design and build a hydro system, this is cake. Just double check everything.

Ive seen people mounting to a 2X4 chunk of wood. Not only a great vibration killer but also is open to air. No danger with having it like this at all.

Well, many electrical warehouses for contractors carry 1000W MH/HPS ballasts. Places like graybar, grainger etc.... they have stuff like that.. its a very inconspicious way to order lighting.

I wired up my own ballast from advance that is over 10 years old.. works perfectly.

With no experience at all (used fluoros before), I wired my own 150W remote ballast from a $50 e-conolight, I could have spent even less if I ordered just the ballast instead of the light in a housing. A 400W ballast is only $60! It IS really easy, and bugs the shit out of me when people spend so much on retail lights... some people are so lazy! lol

 Well, years ago I posted info like this on OG and got flamed for it. :pointlaug

Guess some big commercial grower there musta got kickbacks from them or something, the way they jumped me for trying to help out, and blamed it on site liability issues - yah, right. :bat:

Disclaimer is in order, tho - if you don't know anything about wiring or following a wiring diagram, GET A POT FRIENDLY ELECTRICIAN FRIEND or someone that has done it before to help ya. Don't become a statistic of the fire department. Common sense, a little DIY time and you can throw together your own lights for 25%. AND DON'T DO IT STONED!!!! :yoinks:

Just my 2-cents. Peace. 1Toke

AMEN!

I learned this the hard way, too. First turned on to www.1000bulbs.com at OG way back. I was a newb at the time, and hadn't yet begun recognizing handles, but it may have been 1toke that sent me there.

I like to hang them from the ceiling with bungee cords, but a wood shelf works also. When I put my 1000W MH on a shelf, it was on top of a silicone pot holder from Wal Mart.

I suspect I have also wasted a lot of money on "horticultural" bulbs. I have run both kinds and never seen a difference.

The hydro shops must be defended, though. Retail stores (such as nurseries)typically have a 100% mark up. So the $400 ballast you bought cost them $200, and they probably paid for shipping as well. If they don't get profit from selling ballasts to those afraid to wire their own, then they may not be open when I go to buy nutes.

it could have very well been me, I started a thread just like this a while back on OG. Glad to see this site it getting some due attention from growers!

Hold up, is that all you need? You didn't get a ballast as well did you? What all do I need exactly, and I'm not worried about a reflector. I guess I need a bulb, a cord with a socket, and a ballast with a cord, is that it? Thanks!

Ponics.

Time to get an HPS!

yea dude,
just go to the site and check it out, it wil lsay everythin on the list.
You might need to supply your own cord, just get 10 ft of 12 gauge with a male end for the wall. if you are fancy you can get some male plugs on each of your ballasts and then connect them to the wall with the line, but a lot of people just put it all on the same line to the wall.
you have to make sure your ballast is set up for 120 volts, some ballasts are switchable. the other thing is that htere is no housing for the ballast, and you need cord from the ballast to the socket.....like....you get no cord, so you ahve to wire that and the plug, but that takes about 10 minutes and is what everyon is talking about on this page.... omfg i am too stoned.
so... the answer is your quwstion is yes, that is it. google info for how to wire it, its str8. And hey, if you are getting hps ballast, check out ceramic metal halide bulbs....they are better than normal hps or conversion bulbs cuz they have GREAT spectrum output and make da chronic...but normal hps is the cheapo way to go on bulbs. and get a reflector dude!
