There is a thread on here I just read and he is freeze drying his nug and says that in like less then 3weeks he has buds that are dried and ready to smoke.

He says he hang dries for 3-5days and then into the freezer in an open jar so the mosture is allowed to escape and 2-3weeks later in comes out of the freezer and into a nug jug......

Freeze drying your buds sounds like a bad idea. you would probably ruin your weed.

moist bud + o2 + freezing temp= freezer burn

if it was a good way to dry then more people would do it.

I have also heard that when wet weed is frozen it causes cannabanoid cells to freeze and rupture causing degradation and quality is lost.

The idea is certainly not to freeze "wet" weed just like you don't put "wet" weed into an airtight jar. Freeze Drying is part of another process to cure your stash.

Freeze drying your weed is absolutely a great idea! It is an idea I got from reading a book about marijuana written by Ed Rosenthal. While there may not be "more people" doing it, there are people in the know doing it :)

I'm not saying that just because it works for me it will work for everyone, but I am definitely going to say that in a setup/situation similar to mine: FREEZE DRYING YOUR MARIJUANA IS AN OPTION AS GOOD AS ANY OTHER IF NOT EVEN BETTER.

Take care, read the book, and give it a shot!

What are these bud dryers I keep hearing about?

They're mostly custom-built, but they do sell commercial versions. Here's one on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Atlantis-Hydroponics-Ultimate-Herb-Dryer/dp/B002CWZAW2

A little pricey, but it's got everything you would need.

Here's some pics of my custom-built version (without a filter). It's right next to my tent, which has a scrubber, so there isn't really a need for it to have it's own dedicated carbon filter.

Also, ignore that orange temperature controller in the background. I was lazy and didn't feel like buying a plug for the fan, but I also didn't feel like completely cutting off the controller's plug, so we've compromised until I get my lazy ass over to the local home improvement shop ;) And a non-lazy individual would caulk around the fan.. :p

I guess if you got a good method then thats awesome.
the whole idea of freeze drying my buds scares me. I feel like theres a lot of things that can go wrong. most of the shitty pot that i see is shitty because of the way it was dried and cured.

Im curious which Ed Rosenthal book thats in. I have one of the old Ask Ed books that is extremely outdated. It suggests boiling the roots and driving nails through your stems to increase potency as well as several other flawed/incorrect techniques. I know that he has come out with newer books that are more up to speed with modern techniques.

And please do share your technique. If your not just freezing wet pot then what are you doing.

seems like another snake oil thread......why would i freeze dry when that leads to over dried buds id rather dry the simple way of hang drying then put into paper bags then into jars to cure for a couple weeks or longer.....i dont like dry crumbly bud as that dont preserve nor help it cure, for herb to cure and help evaporate and break down chlorophyll you need moisture in the buds....dont confuse moisture with buds being damp or wet either....and on topic for this to even work you need a frost free freezer as the cooling unit removes humidity from the air so there is no way for frost to form....good luck with this snakeoil technique

Durka makes a good point- it has to be a frost free freezer! I'm sorry but that's the only good point made. It being a frost free freezer allows SUBLIMATION to take place. It is this process that is important, not necessarily the freezing aspect. There is only science behind the process, no oils from any reptiles :)

The book is Ed Rosenthal's Marijuana Grower's Handbook, copyright 2010. There is a thread started by me in this forum (currently it's at the top of the first page) that has all the details of how I go about it. I have used this method to cure several harvests that have resulted in buds with excellent consistency and quality, on a consistent basis.

I understand it is human, and stoner, nature to fear that which he does not know. Please do not be fearful and do know that this method is sound. Check out my thread and check out the book, it has great up to date info on many topics.

I freeze and recommend it.
Great results and super simple. When does that happen? Yeah, I like that!

Try it and compare to normal cure.

no thanks ill dry normaly as i dont think freeze drying allows chlorophyl to evaporate like it should normaly....humans have been air drying herbs for thousands of years why change what is proven to work unless human error fucks it up :)

I wonder how many thousands of years humans plucked wild wheat out of the ground before some whacko caveman said "...ughh, lets drop some seeds in the ground and grow this shit on our own time, ughhh..."

Innovation like a sonofabitch!

Haha, sorry, but your logic is poor. Bring us the Science!
