BBC Documentary looking to speak to the cannabis community

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to read my thread. My name is Bart Corpe and I’m part of a small team making a new observational documentary about Cannabis for BBC3. This is hoping to be a fair and balanced look being neither pro-cannabis or trying to be anti.

We are very keen to talk to a wide range of young people who use the drug and are passionate about it. Whether you smoke it for medicinal reasons or just for fun and relaxation, I’d be keen to hear from you. I’m also looking to speak to home growers or even guerrilla growers who grow. Maybe you have dealt in the past or maybe you have a different experience to share. We are not trying to be too scripted in the people who we film with.

Our film will explore what it’s like to be a cannabis user in Britain today. We want to show the truth, and not the usual stereotypes that other parts of the media often portray. Hopefully with the help of genuine users, growers, and other people who smoke cannabis recreationally we can reflect more accurately what the ups, and in some cases, the downs of what using cannabis can be like.

I can assure you this film will be intelligent and thoughtful. We want to give cannabis users the chance to have their thoughts and feelings expressed in a fair and balanced way. I’m also aware that when it comes to filming some people might prefer to remain anonymous, which is certainly something we’d be happy to consider given the legal situation with growing and using cannabis in Britain today.

We will be filming soon in the coming months. Right now I’m very keen to hear from anyone who wants to know more about the documentary and is happy to share their personal experiences with me. Let me stress, however, that having a chat does not mean you have to take part in the actual programme.

Feel free to PM me here, email at [email protected] or call me on 0117 974 6861

Thanks for your help and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

interesting
i can tell you that yes people still smoke hash there and second they most likely smoke it for the same reasons everyone else does, A: more potent, B: more pure, C: healthier than smoking more buds to get the same high, and from my experience most people cant achieve the same high as hash with just buds (unless its some amazing bud),D: you can make hash as a way to salvage ruined buds or just plain shitty buds, to still get a decent product

these are just a few off the top of my head, best of luck with creating a truly unbiased view of cannabis use in Britain

i think the BBC is worth 10 of any other broadcaster in the world, and to make a decision about what a show is going to be like before it's even made shows narrow mindedness and bias on the part of the accuser. i would be happy to contribute.

When BBC's primary source of funding becomes something other than the government I'll begin to consider the idea of non-biased reporting.

However, I'm not a Brit, so my opinion is just my opinion.

I think some members should take this guy up on his offer, just be extremely paranoid. No real names, no addresses connected to the said member, blindfolding the crew if taking to a secure location, disposable phones/emails, no depiction of the face or identifying facial features, etc.

You're only paranoid if they're not out to get you.

I know in the US there are laws that could potentially force journalists to reveal details to authorities (especially if felony criminal charges are involved), so I'm liable to think the same about Britain's laws.

Thanks for this. Sorry I offended you so much. One thing we at the BBC try and not do is make propaganda, that is the point of us being independent of the state.

Sorry you feel this way about the BBC.

Thanks GMT but yes we are looking to film with people. We can do things in the film making to try and protect your identity if that helps at all?

The BBC doesn't have a great track record of being "fair and balanced" on this issue, but I wish you well in your endeavour and hope you can actually accomplish your hope for this piece.

exactly, whilst i wouldnt claim the BBC to be perfect. imo its actually some of the viewers who are the most biased. i remember discussing a previous cannabis documentary that was ok, not really biased, gave elements of both sides of the argument - and people were posting on here like it was totally against mj - they were accusing the show of not mentioning subjects that WERE actually covered by the show, it was like they had watched a different documentary completely. i could only conclude that they had decided what the show was going to be like before they has watched it and then let their bias influence them to the level that they hadn't even taken in huge parts of what had been said.

i mean you are always going to get a few handwringing mothers telling how drugs ruined their kid's lives - thats the other side of the coin and it also makes good tv for many ;)

Hi Verdant,

It would be great to speak to you about the doc. Feel free to PM, ring or e-mail me if you would like to know more. We can only film in the UK so would be great if you were based here?

Whilst not working on the previous documentaries and not knowing how they were made, it might be the case that they could not represent people as they did not want to be filmed. This might not be the case but could always have been the problem. This is why I am posting here to try and get views across from people on the other side of the fence.

No problem Bart, but that rules me out from any part in your docu as there is no way I would be willing to risk my security in that way.

One line written by you Bart in your online description of your time in lovat fields, is slightly concerning:

"In these situations you need to film around these events so you get the information in a way that is palatable to the viewer."

Given the perceptions of the average member of the UK, largely created by the huge volumes of cash spent by govt. agencies on propoganda, I struggle to see how a possitive light could be shed on cannabis in a way that is palatable to the viewer.

Also I realise that you are doing the rounds, and dont have time to read every thread on every board, but could we ask you to read this one thread, and ask if you will be making any inclusion to the admission that the reason that cannabis is illegal is due to historical cultural values rather than scientific evidence on its harm.

It was more to do with editorial decisions from what I could see.

Nice attempt to turn it to making an argument for getting people to participate in your piece, though. ;)
