How to root clones using Jiffys

”Tools” you’ll need (as seen in this picture):

picture.php

From left to right:

- Alcohol;
- A piece of plastic that you can cut out of a plastic bottle of water. This will be used later to drop a bit of Clonex gel (in this picture the piece of plastic is in the left, hanging on the bottle of alcohol);
- Clonex;
- A container with water to immerse the Jiffys;
- Jiffys;
- A good scissor;
- A shaving blade (if you don’t have one available and your scissor is really good, you can use just the scissor);
- Glasses to immerse the clone stems in water for at least 2 hours.

As you’ll see next, besides all you can see in the Picture, you’ll also need:
- A toothpick or a matchstick
- A sprinkling water device;
- A mini greenhouse (bought or improvised).

Procedure

We clean the scissor with alcohol:
picture.php

Than, we cut some good branches out of our mother plants, like this one:
picture.php

Immerse the stem in water as quick as possible, using a glass for each strain to avoid confusions:
picture.php

Leave it in the water at least for 2 hours, so that the whole clone gets moist in the inside.
picture.php

Immerse the Jiffys in water, using the container I’ve mentioned:

10 minutes later the Jiffys will have absorbed the water and will be expanded, as in this picture:
picture.php

When taking the Jiffys out of the water they should be squeezed with our hands so they keep some humidity without being soaked.
picture.php

After expanded and then squeezed, they are displayed in the mini greenhouse:
picture.php

With a toothpick we make a hole in each Jiffy. The clone stem will later get in this hole:
picture.php

We clean our working place with alcohol (in this case a small plastic yellow board):
picture.php

Now we are going to use the Clonex, the shaving blade and the piece of plastic:
picture.php

We spill a small portion of Clonex upon the piece of plastic:
picture.php

Then we take the clone out of the glass of water and cut the tips of some leaves, to stimulate root growth and to make the clone lighter so that it doesn’t wilt easily and keeps erect:
picture.php

We “clean” the small branches out of the clone and cut the stem again at about 45º, as seen in the following pictures:
picture.php

picture.php

picture.php

After the cut is made we need to immerse the stem in Clonex as quick as possible, so that no oxygen gets “inside” the clone:
picture.php

Right after the stem is involved in Clonex, we stick it in the Jiffys hole:
picture.php

Here they are. Ready and with a “map” in case I forget which is which:
picture.php

Closed inside their mini greenhouse:
picture.php

Now in the place where they will stay rooting, side by side with 2 fluoros of 18w each:

picture.php

To finish we use the water sprinkling device to “spray” water on the leaves, on the walls and on the ceiling of the greenhouse:
picture.php

Finished the procedure we only need to wait for them to root in 7 to 20 days (the time they will take to root depends on several factors, being the strain and the conditions we give them the two main factors).

Every day (preferably 2 or 3 times a day) we should uncover to renew the air e to sprinkle more water to the walls and ceiling of the greenhouse.

In the first 2 or 3 days we leave the holes of the greenhouse almost completly closed. From then on we start opening them a little, and a little more each day, until we get to day 8-10 when we can open the holes wide open and become to sprinkle less water. A few days later we can even leave the greenhouse completly uncovered for one hour or two. We do this because, when the clones feel that they can no longer feed themselves through their leaves (as a consequence of low humidity levels), they feel forced to develop and stretch their roots in order to find food and hidratation through their roots.

When we start to see roots piercing the fine net walls of the Jiffys it means the clone is already rooted and it is convenient to pass it to a pot with soil as soon as possible.

Then let them grow for a week or two and they are ready to 12/12!

Good clones!

Stay cool!

Nice write up, impressive picturing taking skills considering you are working at the same time. I have never used the clonex, is it a rather well working product?

Thanks friends.

Well, my machine is very poor (5MP) and also the lighting conditions, so pictures could be better.

aceofspades: Yes, clonex is very reliable, I get a tax of success of at least 95%.

aminem: maybe you should look for rooting hormones. It is legal to "clone" other veggies\trees, so you can ask for rooting hormones at a garden centre. Where are you from?

Stay cool, see you soon!

Sure... I know where it is. But I'm a bit surprised that you guys in Slovakia have a law that prohibits growing tools, such as Clonex. Get rooting hormones if you can find some.

I just posted this "article" here because I first posted it in the "Portuguese" area of the forum and I thought I could just translate the text to english and share it with all you guys. Hope this can help some non-experienced clone makers.... hehehe.

See you soon, good smokes!

Great thread, i'm definitely going to try this method when i'm ready to clone. I hope its as easy as you make it look

Thanks TokeSolo and ne0b0rn!

ne0b0rn > Thanks man. I'm aware of the fact that I still make mistakes when writing in english, so I thank everyone who find errors in the article for telling me so I can correct them.

Soon I'll post pictures of the clones already rooted. Had 100% success but I had to give up on 4 of them because I don't need that many, I just tryed to root 10 clones because some could fail and I needed 6.

So, stay tunned for the new pics...

Thanks qwerty.

They've all already rooted. As I only need 6, I'm putting the other 4 "aside". Unfortunately none of my friends had space in their grows to keep them.

So I kept 4 Jorge's Diamonds #1, 1 Mohan Ram and 1 Sweet Afgani Delicious.

Here are the pictures with the final results:

Basicly

Expect for clonex for Rootone and Jiffy starter for rapidrooters the same as Cloning with JJScorpio, right? :2cents: :joint:

Hi friends!

Hank Hemp > yes, I guess it's basically the same. You can use rockwool, jiffys, etc. Also you can use any other rooting hormones besides Clonex. If you don't have experience cloning maybe you should consider following both mine and JJScorpio threads. I even considered posting this "inside" of JJScorpio thread, but ended up posting it as a new thread.

Maybe my pictures show some extra details and the opposite may also be true.

I've use rapidrooters just this once and I love them. Almost 100% rooted. I have some looks like your rotters swell up when watered. Maybe I'll do a side by side. Good job though.

I guess both jiffys and those rapidrooters you use are made from peat, so they might be basically the same.

Stay cool!

Excellent thread, super simple!!

I have a couple strains going right now that I really want to keep around. This and the Bonsai mom thread should keep me in good bud for a long long time.

Thanks
