Taking clones in late flower, the easy way.

Had a bit of an accident recently and lost everything in my mother/clone box. I was more than half way through flower so thought I'd do some air layering to try and save what I had in flower. Air layerig is a pain in the arse technique for taking clones in late flower. (this is the only guide I could find http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=130778&highlight=air-layering)

Thing is I was really stoned (not unusual tbh) and forgot the air layering part and just cut a bud off trimmed the lower parts dunked in clonex and put it in coco same as I would with a normal clone. A few minutes later I thought 'd'oh!' and went and did it properly but I kept the little buds in coco watering every day with bubbled plain water, no dome, same as I normally do when cloning in coco, just to see what would happen. Surprisingly they rooted within 10-14 days same as any other cut would :fsu:

Once they were rooted they needed to reveg so I gave them a decent amount of grow food, around 0.6-0.7ec,

here they are just starting to reveg

and a few days later

in a few more days I'll be able to take cuts or pot them on and flower them out. Revegged clones are very strong branchy plants great for flowering bush style or keeping as mothers.

So if you ever have a plant that looks great in flower but you forgot to save a clone of this is the best answer, much less energy used than reveging a full plant and if you time it right you can go straight into flower as soon as the first run is finished.

I didn't write down dates but this whole process, from cutting the bud off the plant, hasn't taken longer than 4 weeks. This may work with other cloning techniques but I wouldn't use anything where a dome is needed or the bud will most likely rot.

you can clone way into flower

It just becomes harder to do as the plant gets older. When it is in flower mode, it takes time to revert the plant back into veg mode, so the plant kind of stalls.

It is not impossible to do, but is alot more difficult than getting cuttings from an active vegging plant

Well that's the thing Dr Dog, this wasn't any more difficult than taking clones from a vegging plant. In fact it was exactly the same :) only difference is waiting for the reveg after they've rooted.

I forgot to mention the plants were around week 7 of flower when I took the cuts. I just forgot to take pics as I didn't think it would work so easily.

Great post SC, this clears many mis-conseptions with reguard to cloning and when is ok. As dog mentioned the difference comes with the reveg time, on that note I might add a tip or suggestion. Topping and pinching new growth tips on some varietys seem to help the donor plant revert to veg quicker, keep an eye on the leaf sets but this is especially helpful for reverting those pesky pre-flowers.

I found a nice way to quicken the reveg.. Once the new awkward veg growth appears, carefully remove all the weird flower masses still hanging around. Most of it you can just brush off with your thumb, but you may need a razor blade. The plant can then focus its energy on new growth not keeping old vestigial growth alive.

I've been experimenting with cloning into flower, since i saw the article on Monstercropping. I haven't seen a big difference on taking cuts in flower, but i have learned a few things.

First, i learned not to cut the bud, like i usually would with a reveg plant, however that already had roots. I realized plants i cut the bud off of and left just left the bottom half of had died not long into the cloning process. Plants that i just took a cutting of, soaked in liquid seaweed dilute and then re-cut and dip did much better and rooted well. Not only that but these plants were very vigorous upon setting back to veg and also set more side branches than any other clone i've taken.

I think i'm going to try air layring with the sea weed paste and see how it works. This could be a big benefit for me since occasionally during all the tying down on a screen i may break a branch almost in half. This would allow me to turn that part of the plant thats gonna die, into a new clone.

Thanks!

The only thing I dont like about taking clones from flowering plants is that they grow retarded, slow and dont stretch much, but are good for making new moms to take good cuts from. You can see this plant is less than a foot tall and has been veg'ing under t5's since september. They do make good plants for micro grows tho, because the nodes are really packed together.

I just take clones and put them in a glass of water, change water every 2 3 days, first roots normally after 7 10 days. enuff roots to transplant after 14 to 18 days.
I have almost a 100% success with this method.

i've never had issues with clonign plants at any stage, just gotta pick from the very top or the very bottom. the cloning gets harder the woodier the stem is. green stems should clone fine, brown stems and you are really pushing your luck. they root fine and ill continue to flower for some time. they won't go back to veg mode for months even under 24/7 light. just keeps making calyxes which it then turns from calyxes back to leaves. they will even unravel seeds that had been made and turn those back into leaves. plants are wonderful creatures.

These were taken at 65 of 70 as lower bud branches , four weeks back in 20/4 and they are ready to rejoin polite society

Both carried a few seed which finished properly and no male structures were seen , pretty good test of stability that half fail.
Same for the males , many produce viable female structures on reveg and i dont use them either.

Might not be on an entirely scientific basis but i rarely see any intersex even selecting from lines known for it.

These will make compact bushy mothers yielding many clones in a few weeks and for several months.

The 4 - 6 weeks this takes is a positive advantage to me , only one clone taken very late from only the most promiseing plants , only kept a month by which time the bud is cured and an informed decision made to clone or cull.

Instead of fifty clones taken in veg i end up with five or less as late flower revegs , much more space efficient.

That's what I thought too Foomar until I lost my cheese clone hehe. For seed run selections though yes it's a good way of finding the hardiest plants as well as the fastest rooting. I've never seen any intersexing signs while doing this btw so probably is a good indicator.

I don't worry about late flower if I want a cutting. Stick em in wet vermiculite for 10 days and they will root, then veg about the same as any other clone.

But I've discovered that clones taken during the first 2 or 3 weeks of flower have the nodes stacked tighter and branch better, producing far more cola bud sites. Almost all of the strains I've cloned that way produce twice the yield or better.
I've gotten to where I force my mothers into flower for 2 weeks before I even cut clones.

I do this when I see an unreal plant late into flower and forgot to take a cut. It's real easy and roots come quickly, its the leaves that take awhile but they'll come. This Nevilles Haze I could not lose so I took cuts at 70 days in and had roots in 5 days, that was a month ago, now as you can see, there is some veg growth coming out, stoked!!!
