Talking of laos i just came back today, went to a village in vientiane to visit my girlfriends uncle but the main reason i went was for the seeds :biggrin:

On arrival within 5 minutes he threw a big bag of weed my way which was below my standard of what i was expecting. Fully seeded whispy buds with pre mature seeds but tbh it didnt smoke that bad and had a very mellow buzz but a buzz none the less.

I explained to him that the seeds were still white and not ready so with that he's wife comes out with some sweet sticky rice and mango and an even bigger bag of weed, but this bag was trim and stems which is what they put in chicken or fish soup. As i looked in the bottom of the bag...JACKPOT! mature viable beans galore! :biggrin:

So we was all sitting drinking and smoking, buds just laying on the table, No way could we do that in thailand! Such a relaxed atmosphere in laos.
Anyway he's friend who grows the stuff came to join the party with another big bag of weed lol but again full of pre mature seeds. When we started talking about growing he said he only flowered for 12 weeks so i told him it needs longer and if he dont want seeds to cull the males. He knew already but they dont really care if it has seeds or not it gets smoked anyway lol fair enough..
I explained that we in the west prefer seedless bud as its stronger and tastier, so he gets on the phone and 5 minutes later this GORGEOUS little honey pulls up on her motorbike with the good stuff!

It doesnt look all that i know but i assure you this is some potent herb! The buzz lasted a good 4 to 5 hours! I strapped a joint took a couple hits and passed it around. They ended up in coughing fits and wretching haha so i finished it and gave him some herb to make his own as i know they like to smoke it through a filter by just taking tobacco out a cigarette.

After a few hours getting high and joking around he asked if i wanted to go see his plants..fuck yeah i do! So we jumped on his bike drove down a couple dirt tracks to his friends home. By the time i got there the sun was going down and the only camera i got is my phone so the pics are abit shitty.

All in all there was eight plants which i identified 3 females, one of which was ahead of the other 2, the others hadnt shown sex yet. He kept telling me that these were original laos race from over 100 years ago and that thai strains are very big but not pure. He didnt know what the thai strains are mixed with he just knows they are'nt pure, it wasnt until later that evening it dawned on me that this thread mentioned thai farmers bringing genetics from pakistan.
I took a few pics then he ripped off a lower branch for me and off we went up the road again with this branch hanging out my back pocket :biggrin:

Very fine serrations on those leaves, reminds me of Philippine Sagada. Bamboo ganja!

I'll try germinating some old Chiang mai seeds soon. They're huge, and when the seedlings sprout they already have the first pair of true leaves! The leaves are indica wide. I hope they germinate so I can post pictures. Unfortunately the seeds are years old. The ganja itself was strong and trippy, very red eyes after smoking, druggy effects you could say.

Thats another thing my girlfriends uncle mentioned is that thai strains have big seeds, but all the thai seeds i've seen aren't that much bigger than these laotion seeds so it sounds like you have some gems! Hopefully they germinate for ya!

cant wait to see how these perform under e-papillon's when i get home, i might throw a few seeds down here for when i return in september but its rainy season now so they'll probably get battered or end up in soup! Lol my three little thai seeds koh chang, udon thani and NP all popped up but bloody mice ate them! I was looking forward to see the difference in them but oh well theres always next time. Luckily i grabbed about 350 of these loation beans so they'll be shared to other landrace lovers for free...

I live in NZ which was the transit point for Thai Stick all over the world. I was there in the 70's and hooked into the Thai Stick distribution network run by Marty Johnstone and Terry Clarke.

Thai stick was known as "Buddha Stick" and as far as I know it was the Mr. Asia syndicate that coined the phrase. From memory this is actually explained in the out of print book about Terry Clarke. Anyway I have read some seedbank breeders from the 70's claiming all sorts of rubbish about "Buddha Sticks" coming from India which is rubbish. Buddha sticks have always referred to nothing but genuine Thai Stick and the "Elephant Stick" was a cheap Indian knockoff of the real Thai Stick.

Thai stick was the trippiest, most potent weed on the planet. End of story. Anybody who actually tried the real thing will tell you that and they will just laugh at you when you start going on about "White Widow" or some other fancy Dutch strain. The weed coming out of South East Asia at that time was stronger than anything that is around these days. As well as Thai Stick there was also "tripping weed" coming out of Sumatra and Vietnam that .... well you really have to try it to understand. The high is more like an acid trip than a weed experience.

Many people in later years have claimed that Thai Stick was so strong because it was dipped in opium, heroin water or hash oil. This sounds quite reasonable until you look at how much Thai Stick the Mr Asia syndicate was actually moving around the world. Dipping 500,000 sticks at a time is a pretty expensive way to do business. The book on Terry Clarke goes into quite a bit of detail about every shipment and it doesn't mention dipping the sticks in anything. Why would they even bother? They were already moving the strongest weed anyway that was selling faster than they could supply it? Still maybe they did dip it because when the weed dried up (Thailand couldn't grow enough of it fast enough to keep up with demand) the syndicate became the biggest Pacific rim heroin smuggler in the world.

It is generally accepted that the true Thai Stick strain is now extinct. The Mr Asia syndicate was buying all that could be produced and it is said that they were the ones who introduced Pakistani indica genetics to the growers. It was said that real Thai Stick took nine months to grow and mature so they crossed it with hash plant to get two or even three crops per season instead of one. I have no idea if that is true but something certainly did happen that killed Thai Stick stone dead. We started getting inferior sticks that were made up to look like the originals but the weed was different. Less potent, green instead of brown and a totally different taste and effect.

Contrary to popular belief, smokers did not embrace the new Dutch weed or believe it was more potent. That is just good marketing by the Dutch. The hippies complained loud and long about the new "chem schwag" that was replacing their beloved sun ripened golden sweet and spicey strains. We just got sick of complaining in the end.

For the record, the real Thai Stick came from Udon in East Thailand and I have never seen any Thai seeds in seedbanks that originated from this province.

The last link states that Thai Stick declined in popularity when stronger local weed came on the market. This is rubbish. I was there at the time in the middle of it all. Thai Stick never declined in popularity at all. It simply dried up and you couldn't get it anymore and everybody still wanted to get it and they still want to get it thirty years later. It was the fact that you couldn't get Thai Stick any longer that actually started the weed revolution. People all over the world suddenly started seeking out Asian and Columbian strains and growing them because they missed the Thai weed.

As a side note... after the Mr asia syndicate started falling apart the Australian Police busted one of the biggest commercial cannabis growing operations of all time (outside Mexico and Columbia). A huge Queensland syndicate was growing hundreds of acres (the police suppressed a lot of information at the time) of Thai weed right in the middle of the Queensland sugar cane belt. Many of the plants were reported to be 18ft high upwards. This stuff was almost as strong as original Thai Stick which sort of kills the dipped in opium theory. Not long after that NZ and Aussie were flooded with weed from Sumatra in Indonesia, apparently also grown by a huge syndicate. Once again that was killer weed far stronger than any Dutch strain I've ever tried.

In the last few years the rumours are that Papau New Guinea now has the killer weed. They call it 'Niugini gold' ....

If anybody could actually get their hands on some then we may find out that it is the new Thai Stick?

As for Aussie.... yes the Aussies had the best weed but it was a whole different world. Aussie weed was driven by the Mr Asia syndicate and the organised crime smuggling rings that followed. Some of the biggest commercial crops outside Asia were grown in Aussie during the 70's and 80's. The tropical weed coming out of the Queensland sugar cane belt was nothing short of magic. They had... and probably still have... a huge strain that supposedly came from Thailand. Queensland plants were the biggest I've ever seen and I've seen many 15 - 20 foot sativas over the years. That Queensland stuff was real Jack and the beanstalk seeds. As well as the biggest plants but also the biggest seeds I've ever seen apart from a few mutant Afghani seeds.

Well that's good news as this is what he had to say about Mango Thai:

"Mango Thai is the craziest and I have some pretty ridiculous sativas. I've read on this site that it takes 14-16 weeks flowering and I'm thinking whatever... what planet is that on? This is the real deal okay. It grows like bamboo, goes in and out of flowering as it pleases, flowers on some branches but not others on the same plant, stretches more than any plant I've ever grown, flowers slower than just about anything I've seen before AND forgets to flower. That's right. You can kick some of this stuff into any light sequence you like but some plants simply refuse to flower. I've got Mango Haze still in full veg growth after everything else FINISHED a month ago and got harvested... two weeks to winter... and some Mango still haven't even started. Now that is real old school."

All this talk about Pakistani genetics has got me worried about the purity of Isaan strains. It doesn't help that most Thai strains look darker green and more robust than the stuff coming from behind the border, Laos and Cambodia. Not having been around in the 70's it's impossible to recognize the old school Thai phenotype even if I see one.

ok, i've recently gotten some viable old thai stick seeds grown in the queensland oz area by an older grower for decades from what i've been told. they are called "howard's special thai".

^picture of of one of kanga's thais that look remarkably like howard's special thai in very early veg. now they are going more sativa looking.

How did the leaves on that fat leaf Thai look when it was mature ?
I have seen plants go from fat leaves to very thin as the plant put on mass .

the plants are very vigorous and i'll start posting pics. some are definitely going outdoors for the 2014 harvest season.

also, southern star seeds has released nanan boucloU that is reportedly half png. i've got one female i made clones off of that has quite a bit of the "png" influence from what i can determine aided by sss help; the png has a reddish appearance. i've got some pics in my albums. the fan leaf smoke aroma off my png influenced pheno is quite rich/delicious. i've made seeds off of her and will run some homemade f1's to try to select for more png dom attributes.

not so sure about the Thai stick type coming from these parts though. I heard that they grow old school Thai's around yasothon area, i was gifted seeds from Roi-Et which isn't far from yasothon a few years ago.
Only tried grow two plants, got one female which only just started flowering after four months and was about 12 feet tall. I had to return to the UK so she was left with Thai people...inevitably she ended up in soup lol.

Sent the army after the kancha growers . Up in Isaan .

Was reading the Pattaya Daily .
Cops busted a few hundred kilos . As ever the suspects gave up their suppliers in typical Thai style . They said it was grown in Laos transported across the Mekong and shipped BKK and Phuket .

So do you think the older Thai strains are gone completely? I know a lot of lao brick can be found in isaan but i reckon theres still a few Thai gems thats been kept alive somewhere around here. I doubt that amount could be grown for any length of time in isaan without going unnoticed hence why it has to be imported from lao to meet the supply for demand in Thailand.

I have seen the way the Thai bureaucracy works . Pretty sure some areas would have been spared either through pay offs, inaccessibility or poor planning .

Up by the Mekong is a long way from Bangkok . he he .

This one comes from further West .
Nth Central but closer to Myanmar than Laos . Mr Tiva said the flowers were turning gold at maturity . Donald has been playing with it recently . He was very excited about it last I heard .
