clones question

clones question

hello "old farts" i have been searching for this answer for quite some time now and havent really found what im looking for so i thought id ask the old farts the question. i really need some help.

i am about to acquire rooted clones. (5wks) they are currently being cared for hydroponically. i on the other hand am doing organic soil.
are there going to be any problems planting them in soil and switching things up on them? or am i going to be wasting my time and money? thanks hope to hear back soon.

Be careful with the roots and they will be just fine. Hydro ph is usually kept lower but it shouldn't be a problem

I think I have just a couple of more questions... Then you guys will be done with my oooh so basic questions.(I hope). I think the two plants that have been hanging for about 11 days are ready to start the cure process. I have read that the stems should snap. Well they sort of snap, meaning that the break easily, but the skin/bark stays in place. Everything feels dry. Is this about the right time to put them in jars?

Okay, while I'm picking your brains... This is what I plan on doing:

~Cut the buds away from the stems
~Place in wide mouth mason jars, loosely packed, but full
~Open the jars everyday for about 6 hours a day and stir a bit every couple of days
~Keep in a cool dry place for 2 months. Question: do I need to air them everyday for the full 2 months?

Also, I may try to trim the buds up a bit more.

I still have girl #3 that has not been harvested yet. Her resin is looking nice and amber, which is what I think I want, as I'm looking for a more mello body high. Something nice before bed...

You guys have been great! HempKat I love your photography. It's so beautiful! Do you have more pictures posted that I can look at?

Thank you, Thank You, Thank You,:thank you:

Hi Old Farts!

Thanks for your insight on my previous questions.

Another 1)-we're moving the end of June. I just flipped the last cycle of clones.

It's going to be local, done in a day. I want to preserve the moms I have and am worried about stress.

What is the best way to transport my moms and temporarily store them during the break down and set up of the new digs?

Would taking a few cuttings of the moms prior to moving be too stressful?

I'm thinking the cuttings could be kept cool in baggies in the fridge while the move is on. That way if the moms crash I have the cuttings to start anew.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

thx,

I'm not in the old farts catagory, but I found this thread awhile back and this is what I've been doing. I find it works great.

to transport mothers i cut a piece of carboard to fit the top of my plant container with a slit and hole in the center so the dirt doesnt fall out. i secure that with tape to the top of the container. then i take twine and start at the bottom of the plant and lift the branches while winding the twine around the plant. it sorta looks like how live christmas trees come bound up. then i put them on their sides in a 35 gal tote. i can fit 6 mothers in 8in sqaures in one 35 gal tote.

Dude, that's a great shot. What kind of camera was that taken with? I have a kodak, not an SLR but the high end of non SLR's. It has a great optical zoom, and does things I like (like shoot RAW) but it doesn't get nearly that close in macro.

That shot was taken with a Nikon Coolpix 4800 which is a 4MP camera with 8x optical zoom and the ability to auto focus from as close as .5 inches.

Those cameras are virtually obsolete now though but they have a newer one (P-90 I think) that is 12MP and 24X optical zoom that can focus as close as .5" so if the camera I had can do so good imagine what one with 3 thimes the power could do.

Provided you can transplant them to soil without disturbing the existing roots too much then it should work fine. I've never dealt with hydro so I can't speak from experience but the worst I can think of happening is they might experience a brief delay in growth as the plants adjust to a new environment.

Yeah I do have alot more pics but not in my current gallery. They upgraded the hub software a while back and in the process I guess they had to create me a new gallery and that's why you don't see much when you look in my gallery now. They did however keep my old gallary around so all the pics are still there but just can't be found clicking on my gallery icon. Anyway here's the link to the old gallery.

Now as for your questions, airing the jars out for 6 hfours is about 5 hours and 45 minutes too long. 15 minutes is plenty. I also wouldn't stir the buds, maybe a little shake before you open the jars to air them. You don't want to do too much to them so you don't find a bunch of the triches breaking up and being left behind in the jar.

As for how often to open the jars for the first week or two they should be opened every day. After a couple of weeks then switch to opening them every other day for a couple of weeks. Then for the last month once a week is fine.

Just a tip from an old fart...
try not to be too hasty in getting your buds in the jar. More pot has been ruined by it being shoved in a jar too green.
When the branches on the drying buds "snap" when you bend them, they are ready to cut off and put in the jar. Not until. To early can cause fermentation that will either lead to mold, or cause a nasty taste and smell that will not leave, short of a water cure.

When the buds are ready for the jar, the usually seem way too dry. Internal moisture will freshen them back up by the next day.

thx,

Are the plants big? If they're too big to fit in typical boxes, wardobe boxes (Tall boxes with a metal bar that goes across the top for hanging clothes from) are good for moving plants. They're expensive though like around $10 to $15 per box. What's also nice about these boxes if the plants are short enough to leave room at the top you can likely attach a light to the bsr. Then you just make sure they're watered before you pack them. That way If you need some time when you get to the new place all you need do is stick the boxes near an electrical outlet and plug in the lights.

Taking clones isn't a bad idea either since clones can be refrigerated to slow them down.

HempKat,

Your pictures are wonderful ! Okay, as soon as I have a couple more sips of my coffee I'm going to start canning.

I'm almost there.... Thanks a bunch (again). I shutter to think what would have happened to this grow if not for this thread..

BTW: as soon as I'm done canning sister #3 is coming down for harvest....

ericcalif,

I actually bought one of the Caliber III. Is one enough, if I try to fill the jars up with the same amount or do I need one for each jar? I would think that I would need one for each jar. That could get pricey as I have a few jars:).

Thanks, Gabs

I think it might depend on your circumstances, but if you only have a few jars, and they are filled about the same with bud that's dried similarly, then I think the hygrometer in one jar would give you a guide as to the rest. I've cured 4 half gallon mason jars loosely filled 1/2 way, at once, and moving the caliber from one to another, they seem pretty equal.

Just to expand on this thought, and this is for whoever reads this because hoosierdaddy already knows this, but when they say wait until the stem snaps, they don't mean it has to snap into two seperate pieces. Sometimes it might, more often it probably won't. What they mean by snap is an audible snapping noise that you can hear without having to hold it close to your ear while bending.

Thanks for the compliments on the pictures. As for your grow without this thread, well you likely would have asked around until you got answers you felt comfortable with so I'm guessing your results without this thread would have been roughly the same....you'd just have less hair left on your head. :D

Not true HempKat! Before I found this thread I was reluctant to post anything anywhere for a few different reasons. Everyone here has been so kind and helpful, especially you HempKat. I know without a doubt that this grow would have been a disaster, or should I say an very expensive disaster.

I have made mistakes, and you patiently and with a wealth of knowledge helped me through each phase. I know I have taken way too much advantage of you! Besides that, NOBODY, except my DSH knows about this little garden adventure and it is so nice to share pics and talk freely about what I have going on, cuz to me this is a real accomplishment to get this far. It just stinks that it's illegal. Anyway, thanks for all your help....

I am going to end this post and start another one with another concern...lol...
