Light proof intake Q's

The intake im working on is for a mini project. The exhaust will be a 120mm fan so i've figured about 30" for the passive intake should suffice based on the general 2 - 3 times rule and on cab specs.
Here is a picture to give you an idea:

I'm goin with a 3"H x 10"L rectangular shape. My question is kind of hard for me to word at the moment so bear with me. Do I need to keep the spacing uniform throughout the whole intake?... For example on both sides of the wall and the top needs to be 3" x 10" uniformly around? If the opening was 3" x 10" and then inside the light trap was only 1" x 10" then it wouldnt actually be 30" of airflow and also cause restriction actually becoming a 1" x 10" vent despite the 3"x 10" holes?
That is the best I can explain it haha, I'm sotally tober maybe that is why. All advice and wisdom greatly appreciated in advance.

It would work best if you do. I'm sure you're familiar with the term "bottleneck" in regards to flow restriction.

Correct.
