I was wondering what you guys think.
Which method for vegg in your opinion is better?...
I have always used 24/0 and had good results.
But i have heard from some people recently that 18/6 is better.
Any info and facts would be great.
Thanks everyone, this site is always full of helpful advice and info.

Mother Nature goes with 18/6 and we are trying to replicate her. So I would go with what she says is best...

i say save the energy and save money on 18/6! i've actually used 16/8 all 4 times i have grown and gotten females every time! no auto flower or anything. so i guess it just depends? heres mine now at 32 days flower. actually pix r of 28 days. i used 16/8 then switched 12/12 at 40 days veg.

From what little I remember from botany in college I think the stomata need to have a chance to open at night on a lot of plants to exchange gasses. 6 hours should be enough I think... not shure if weed is a CAM C4 or whatnot type of plant though so it may not even do this.

photosynthsis, i find that with 18/6 lighting my roots grow more rapidly and uniform plants seem more lush green then with 24/0 lighting. srry no documented here facts just been my experince

I read somewhere that cannabis don't need a dark period in vegetative stage like other plants. There are plants that need dark but cannabis can thrive under 24/0. The only time they need dark is when they need to bloom. It's good for a grow room to cool down.

yea i think i am going to switch to 18/6 tonight. It just makes sense to me that it will make the plant a little stronger and healthier. Well see.

I always used to run 18/6 when I was starting from seeds only. Now I get cuts from freinds/clubs which have been kept on 24/0. Some strains have started to flower when I put em back on 18/6 at my place so what I do now is run my 400 watt veg light on 18/6 and have a 25 watt floro bulb that stays on 24/0. This way I save some juice and the plants do get a bit of a rest as they droop during the 6 hours of 25 watts only. This took care of the flowering prob as well.

was on 24/7 and changed to 19/5 and right away the males started showing
the ladys seem quite happy at reduced lighting

16-20 hrs of light is optimal for a couple reasons...

First, unless you're in Alaska during the Summer, no where do plants naturally grow under 24 hrs of light. Yes, they do indoors, of course.

Second, you'll save about 12-15% of your lighting cost if you use 16-20 hrs of light. Significant? If you're vegging under 400W or more, you bet. Fluoros? Prob not enough to really notice.

Third, there are definately benefits to alow plants to have a dark period during veg. What are they you ask? Hell should I know. I've heard it all including "that's the time when roots do the most growing" (bullsh%t)...

Basically, I do 16/8 because less light during veg tends to induce females for me (whether you belive in pre sexxed seeds or not) and it costs less than 24/0

Forgive if this becomes hard to understand, I'm drunk (something I don't do very ofent) and a bit stoned. I was using a 24/0 schedule up until about a week ago, when I read several things stating that 18/6 would give a higher chance pre-flowers. Since I needed an easy way to sex, without risk of polination (this will be my first complete (hopefully) grow, first one I had to tear down about 4 weeks in, those were 24/0) I decided to switch to 18/6. I don't know for myself yet if It heightens the chance of preflowers, but I do believe that I saw increased gorwth in my plants, rather than decreaesed, after swtiching lighting schedules. That's my 2 cents, take it with the minimal experieence that it's followed by.

With soil grows 24/0 doesnt seem to make the plants take off the way they would growing hydro 24/0,I like 18/6 for soil grows I've used 24/0 and found it to be not much faster if you're in a hurry,I'm always trying to slow my vegging plants down it seems lol.

You could use 24/0 with florescent lights. With hid, because they are stronger, you should probably use 18/6. I know with my plants under hid that they slightly wilt after maybe 18 hours of light because they have become saturated and need a dark period.

That is another thing I noticed when I used 24/0,after 18 hours or so the plants literally began drooping and looking bad, never figured out the reason but it was obvious.Just another reason to use 18/6 I guess

Yes in soil 24/0 is a bit faster veg than 18/6 but not so dramatically that is right....
If you use 24/0, watch out for "light burn" which your plants will be more prone to
since they do not have a dark period to cool off.....
However, since your bulb is not turning on and off every single day, 24/0 seems like it
would be less wear and tear on the bulb itself.......

Even though it seems more "natural" to go with 18/6, using 24/0 really has no adverse effects on the plant's physiology and sex differentiation....that is my final answer.

:ying: your friend guineapig :ying:

(hmmm...skeletor, sometimes switching from MH to HPS can cause this
drooping as can the maturing of the Cannabis plant when a certain leaf
arrangement called "alternate phyllotaxy" forms.....maybe your particular
variety just didn't like 24/0 and was somehow more "used" to a more
natural pattern of 18/6 for some reason, like if they are a variety which
had been outdoors but had recently been moved indoors....how 'bout that?)
