Something is eating one of my plants!!

What the fuck is this? It's the only plant out of 8 in flower that has this going on. It looks like something chewed almost halfway through the main stalk on this lady, eating all of the outer layer all the way around the base about 3" high. What could do this without being seen/caught? Can I save her? She's about three weeks in and it would suck to lose her. I was thinking of some medical tape around the wound since it's breathable, and a bamboo stake to releive most of the weight from the stalk. Any thoughts?

CRAZY
is it outdoors?
do you have a bird, cat, rodent or potental rodent invader?
Did it happen in one shot....
My bird chews stems and shreds them....looks close but the shreddings are still there....is it actually being eaten.......put your video cam on when your not around...
i would tape it up like you said....and say a prayer

Dammit! I don't have any pets, and haven't seen any mice here. I will go get a mousetrap tomorrow just in case though. I'm thinking of taking the inside of a paper towel roll, and cutting a slit lengthwise then putting it around the stalk about an inch deep into the soil. Hopefully that will work for now.

VG: It's an indoor grow

i say mouse ...2 replies...both say mouse..........mice are everywhere......it would seem you can see the toothmarks and saliva on the top of the wound.....other than that maybe a 14 inch aphid?

if its alive still.....it can be saved.................

Its mice alright.
your idea of a toilet paper tube would be useless. Mice can easily jump up into the plant if they want. speaking of which, inspect all over the plants, you might see more damage. They seem to like young little sprouts and new growth ime. I'm suprised it didnt chew deeper into that stem and topple the plant over to get into the growth tips.

I doubt you'll have much success trying to save that victim.

Get some "victor" mouse traps and tweak (bend) the trigger tab slightly so they go go off more easily when the mice go fo the peanut butter. I've had a few tricky little bastards that were able to clean off all the peanut butter without triggering the traps, but when I bent the triggers slightly, they finally got their mouse.

Even if you think you've gotten the mouse, its always a good thing to keep some baited traps around forthe next one that finds a way in. btw...dont bother trying to reuse the trap once its nailed a mouse, I've even tried sterilizing them by pouring boiling water over the used traps with no sucess, where a fresh trap always nails em "if" they're around.

Also, they're not as humain (dont cause instant death like a mouse trap), but putting a few glue trap boards (with a dash of peanut butter in the center) around the places where you think they might be getting in is a good idea.

But all said and done, you must search for where and how the mouse (or more likely 'mice') found a way into the grow. Seal off all small holes etc with that expanding urethane insulating foam stuff and get something like a good treshold and door sweep (weather stripping) to seal the bottom of all the doorways. A mouse can squeeze through an opening as small as 3/8" !

You have a dog ? always take up his food dish at night to force the mice to look elsewhere for food, not to mention how sick the dog can get if its food gets mouse droppings or urine on it. Clean the dog bowls daily. (leptospirosis)

People can get VERY sick and even die from dried mouse shit dust in the air too btw. (hunta virus)

KILL THOSE BASTARDS !

I liv in the country and traps are good for 1 mouse but you need to get their offspring and cousins or they will be back.
I like to use the poisoned feed/grain, it's a small pouch so just leave a few hanging around in a safe place from pets or kids.
They will stock up and the feed and then share it with the rest of the vermin and you can bet they'll chose the bait over the plant.

I agree with 10k that girls is probably toast but give it a try, the inner hurd is intact, just may with some medical tape and a brace.

Peace

hell yea I agree with subby on the poison.
Very effective way to eliminate the mouse threat.

It's a danger though, if you have a dog or cat that may find and eat the poison or the dead mouse. You can get mouse bait poison "feeding stations" to put the poison cubes into so the dog or cat cant get to it and eat it, but you still must keep an eye out for the dead critters so the dog dont find em first.

Theres a guy around icmag somewhere with a warehouse grow, who uses a garbage can half full of water with a sheet of styrofoam with a glob of peanut butter on it floating in the water, with some rope hanging around the outsides of the can so mice can climb up and jump in to get to the bait. heh heh

Like a roach hotel..."They check in, but they can't checkout"...they drown instead.

but hell yea
If you dont have a dog or cat to worry about get some mouse baits AND some glue traps or regular snapper traps. Wallyworld has mouse poison bags, glue boards and the victor brand traps dirt cheap.
Tractor supply has the industrial strength bait cubes and feeding stations.

Yup, I'm pretty sure my dog died after eating a mouse we had poisoned, we often caught her with a mouse in her jaws (she was better than a cat in that respect) but it never occured to us she would catch one of the poisoned ones.
Good call 10K

Excerpt from their website....

Send pellets screaming out the muzzle at 1,000 fps with Gamo's super-powerful Varmint Hunter (1,200 fps with PBA ammo!). Laser scope proves deadly at night to all weed eatin mice and thier friends. This breakbarrel rifle has a spring-piston powerplant and comes with a 4x32mm scope (there are no open sights), rings and scope stop.
This is definitely intended for adult use, as the cocking effort requires 30 lbs. of force. Use the Varmint Hunter for plinking and shooting targets, spinners and small pests that have the balls to invade your diesel grow.

get a kitten or two, even if the mice don't get caught by the cats, they smell the cats scent everywhere as soon as they arrive and stay away.

The garbage can trick?, that's a good one too, simple trap, take a stick long enough to go over the top of the garbage can, get a used tin can and open up both ends, slide can over stick so it hangs in the center of the G can, carefully place bait of choice on top of can, when critters come along for bait, they climb upon the can, and it rolls them into the garbage can.

Even simpler, take a large stainless steel mixing bowl, fill halfway with water or beer, varmits climb in for drinky drink, can't get out, you'll find them drowned in morning.
