Very good summation of Skunk. I might add that there is also the evolution of Sk#1 under DW, and that skunk and sk#1 are two things. This is as real as it gets for skunk. View attachment 19163776
We ordered some Skunk 1 seeds in the 80s from the Super Sativa Seed Club, they arrived in Canada, ready to grow under HPS. First time I grew an indoor strain under a HPS...both light and seed were a first.
Your plant reminds me of the Skunk 1 plant I grew.

I wanted to add that all the classic weed we got was green. Not purple. Light green soft stems. It's not that purple weed didnt exist, it just wasn't what people had in the US. It started to appear in the 90s.

Someone else mentioned there was only a few varieties that came around. That is how it was in our region. One of them gave us the "goofies" where everything was funny. Another made our eyes half closed.. some interesting effects that seem to have disappeared with light green weed.

Skunk was a name for various varieties aromatic marijuanna from that time. Quite often black columbian or Acapulco gold, some afghans like the pygmy people would cross. Because of prohibition people would ask someone if they knew "where they could find the skunk". By their response you could tell, maybe they try to get you to be more clear with what you are asking.... you mean marijuanna? Naw man, forget it. We are leaving now. If you asked someone for weed, marijuana or grass, you could go to jail because you may be talking to an undercover. The war on drugs.

These highly aromatic varieties although nice, came with that big smell that would travel and hang around. You could have it double bag sealed in your pocket and anyone near you would know you had it. If it was in your car 2 hours ago opened up. You'd still smell it in the car. Growing it, you could be found easily. A real nightmare during prohibition.

Time goes by. A lot of people went to jail. I've turned down skunk several times, it's just too risky. Not worth it. Many had the same attitude. It became harder to sell because of that.

The indian had been working with some different genetics. Enter Northern Lights. One iteration was stuff that was potent, but had low odor. Almost no smell when growing. Stealth grows, easier to hide. Godsend. Went onto dominate the scene for obvious reasons.

Somewhere, someone decided to market "skunk" as a brand. A prelude to the popular cannabis culture we see around us today. The marketing and hype took. Suddenly skunk was some genotype, not an array of phenotypes like in the 70s. Now people that never even had skunky weed from back then... suddenly want it. Why do they want it? Marketing. Hype. Dont even know what it is, but they want it. Yeah we got it... come buy it. Cash cows.
" The Indian's got the whammo."

A lid was how it was measured. Open the jar and spread it on the lid. No scale. If anyone is wondering.

not in my neighborhood , no lid was used , never heard of that , measure it on a lid..funny

was that an east coast thing?

we went by looks or fingers…looks like an ounce , ok that’s cool..

or , 2 finger lid , 3 and 4 finger lids were the best…

I do not recall when scales came onto the scene

keys or kilos were 2.2 lbs , 1/2 kilo , so on and so forth

I’m talking 60’s here , smoked my first j in 1963…🤓

I think that would have driven me crazy! Scales were always a thing from my very first days buying/smoking weed. But I was a kid in the 80's... born late 70's.

that’s all we knew , just had to go by looks , feel , and smell

some dealers were decent and honest but most were hustlers , always had to be on the lookout for catnip , parsley , and tobacco that they used to cut their weed with..

but yeah , two hippies in the park selling lids , I’ll take one , walk over to their 53 Chevy and open the trunk , 3 big brown shopping bags filled to the brim with loose buds

dude grabbed a baggie , grabbed a handful or two of buds , held it up and looked at it , yeah that’s about an ounce

everyone was happy

I also ordered those seed as well in 86 grew them outside in New Jersey at 40N . Grew some 12’ plants , I believe they matured early to mid October. For the most part they were sweet smelling not skunk at all . It reminded me of good Colombian in many ways. I did however have one pheno that smelled like burnt rubber that was not at all my favorite. I remember it having extremely white pistols that turned orange and had lots of resin.

It was my understanding that Neville chose the skunky phones originally and Sam chose the fruity ones. I do know that some of the early SSSC stuff had that great Afghani skunk to them. Whatever the case with genetics anything's possible. You'd be surprised how easy it is to destroy a perfectly great strain with one mediocre cross. I've done it many times in my career. That's all that happened to the skunk spray stuff. Late 80 to early 90s people didn't take clones and make mothers to isolate the genetics as done today. Some of those great sharp pungent skunk and pine notes slipped away along with that great floral lime skunky flavor. Slipped Into oblivion. There are some great new genetics out there for sure but I guess we always think back to the golden years.

Yes they did have a sweetness to them that people commented on. Which was odd in a way because the first person who had ordered these seeds which inspired us to order had more of the Skunky nature to them as our order contained a sweeter flavor and the resin was not as sandy. I grew them indoors and took about 6oz from a plant. The first order of skunk... the smaller leaves were more resinous, with the resin being gritty. The sweeter flavored plants did not have that sandy textured resin. Many people preferred the less smelly and sweeter skunk. I do recall that burnt rubber smell, it was not to my liking at all either.

I had grown unknown plants indoors under fluorescent light previously but when Skunk came along with HPS that was a game changer. The 2 seedbanks from the Netherlands changed the cannabis scene considerably at the time.

Maybe one day you will convince yourself it's worth a shot to start some of those 1993 seeds.
I liked how consistent those plants were for the time. The last inbred seeds I made from the skunk were dark, mottled and plump but I could not get them to ever germinate, I never figured out why.

If I'm trying to sprout old seeds I'll go about 20% of hydrogen peroxide and sparkling water mixed with tap water. Keeps temps no less than 80° I shoot for 85-90°. Best chance of any but I've never had good luck with seeds any older that 10 yrs unless they were stored in freezer and never messed with

The last inbreeding of skunk I did even when they were fresh I could not get them to germinate, that is something that has never happened before or since. It was very puzzling to me. I'm sure there is someone who knows what happened.

Somehow the pollin was sterile. I've had it happen once only and unfortunately ya the plant was good shit. I lost it. That's farming for ya

I watched the clip where Gypsy interviewed Sam and i think he said when he first brought it to holland it was completely skunky and he could smell it driving a 1/4 mile away from it where it growing driving down the road, then they selected to get rid of the smell.
Still stunk when it was sweet. I could smell them before I got to my sun gardens. Really loud.
