Organic Root/Hyphae Porn

NOW does anyone else got any root/hyphae porn they wanna share? i feel like im hogging this whole thread up, sorry Elephant Man. let the pics begin!

Hog away bro, why I started this thread.

I'm sorry I haven't posted, been rendered a bit speechless by your pix. :respect:

I have been researching coco for quite some time, I think I understand the necessary changes in ratios needed (as opposed to soil), and seeing your mix made alot of sense and put some stuff together between my 2 brain cells. I have actually been looking for a mostly dry ammended coco mix for a starting point, and I really like yours. I am a poor broken bastard, but if I can gather a couple things I'm missing (and the coco) I hope to giver a go.

I got to get my ass in gear on the bokashi thing too. Everything I do here is done indoor and stuff like banana peels and coffee break down plenty fast enough, but bokahi is the real composting power I need to take my grow to the next level. :abduct:

I will update this thread at next transplant if all goes well, but I did see some surface fungi today. I have some seedlings in little medicine cups, and when I moved one today I saw this:

Top covering is my own homemade cannamulch, I think I will cover it with some well weathered seashells tomorrow, as the plants are not big enough yet to provide enough shade. I didn't get a pic of that particular plant, nor am I sure which one it was, but I got a couple pics of another to put up just for fun. Looks happy to me. Strain is BSHW and I'm pretty sure the purple like hue is normal.

I got a grow journal here I got to update, this isn't really my main forum, but I'm trying to stay in touch with some friends I made here. I hope to make more.

Love and light :bandit:

Sorry for the abbreviation, she is Big Sur Holy Weed, and looks like a 'zacetecas purple' (sp) like pheno, hence the blue hue. I like her alot too, but this is my first run with her so I don't know much more about her. Actually she is unsexed yet, but she or he will get some sex either way.

Thanks.

Nice genetics EM! How did you come by it, if you don't mind me asking?
I have some BSHW (from RM) beans tucked away too, and have been waiting to see some one grow it out.

Bokashi looks like the way to go. I need to get me some too :D

Beautiful plants EM.

Thank you kindly Neongreen :)

She was donated by a very kind and generous friend by the name of Snowcap, to be honest, I don't know if he posts here or not.

This is what he said about her:

If I may so add some information regarding the BSHW:

The strain that you are growing and I is not from Danbo's stock. This strain comes from an old grower in Santa Cruz / Big Sur area in California. This BSHW has more phenos and is more intact with historical variances then from the Danbo BSHW. The Danbo line is very Oaxacan leaning while this line is called BSHW Pez pheno strain. So far from this strain being grown out there is some very Zacatecas purple leaning phenos, Durban Poison leaning phenos and Oaxacan leaning phenos. I have 2 sources of this line gifted to me and being grown out. I spoke to Danbo not to long ago and I asked if he could give me a history on his BSHW (Aka:TRIP). Hopefully I'll get his story and share with the rest of you.

I use a "Hot Mix" recipe, ive been playing around with;here:

Medium:
+Coco Coir 3 parts
+BioTerra Plus(organic soil mix) 4 parts
+Worm Castings 1 part
+Perlite 2 part

Dry Ammendments:
-Dolomite Lime 1cup/cf
-Pumice 1cup/cf
-Azomite 1cup/cf
-Bone Meal 1cup/cf
-Bokashi 1cup/cf
-Kelp Meal 1/2cup/cf
-Greensand 1/2cup/cf
-Blood Meal 1/4cup/cf
-Fish Meal 1/4cup/cf
-Alfalfa Meal 1/5cup/cf

& feed Wormcastings+BSM+fulvic acid teas

nope, no sawdust hehe

What ingredients contained the spores for your fungi? I know the castings contain bacterial flora, was it the Bio-terra product that contained the mykes?

I haven't seen any hyphae growing in my medium yet so I ventured over to www.fungi.com and I'm waiting for some spores to get in.

I cant speak for Elephant man, but my secrets in the home made Bokashi n teas...

Simplicity at its best.:2cents:

Actually, Kosmo did just fine speaking for me, so I'll quote him. ;)

The myco are everywhere Congo bro, even in the air you breath.

Nearly all the amendments mentioned and nearly any unsterilized organic soil will contain them. They may be dormant but they are there. :2cents:

This one is harder to be specific on, some things they do man in general still does not understand.

Gonna forget a few things I'm sure cause I'm nice and toasted right now but:

They increase drought, pathogen, and stress resistance.
They exude acids and bases that help control ph.
They exude saccharides that give soil structure.
They break down insoluables, organic matter, and minerals into nutrients readily absorbed by plants.
They work in symbiosis with your plants, if everything is balanced.

I just wanna say in my own opinion, that while adding innoculants can be beneficial, it's all about timing, and you can over do it easily. I've done it myself. I just don't want anyone to believe that you must add innoculants to have living soil, and adding too much can be counterproductive. If you don't understand how it works (not saying I do) spend your money on good organic soil (or coco, not ruling anything out), feed it lightly with good organic products and filtered water and the myco will come. There is no 'magic mix' and there is very happy soil all over the world made of very varying compositions. You may even have to adjust your own soil to what strain you are growing and your own environment, but that's what being an 'organic mechanic' is all about.

I just wasn't sure if there was a specific myco species we were looking for. My train of thought was trying to replicate legumes by introducing the Rhizoid genus into my soil. Are the saprophytic genus of fungi (Aspergillus, Penecillum, Syncephelastrum, etc.) included as part of the soil beneficials?

I'm probably just over-thinking this topic since I just completed a clinical microbiology course :)

That's a valid question, if I sounded condescending, it was not intentional...I was over-generalizing.

I don't know what myco mj uses specifically, as I understand it, if they are needed, they'll work...if not, they lay dormant. I could be wrong.

I have used subculture, biozome, endo, ecto, and a few other innoculants, honestly, I don't see a difference without it. I'm not using any of them now. I was under the impression that with good soil it shouldn't be necessary. I am pretty sure my ordinary nursery potting soil is innoculated though...it's made by eb stone. Maybe all good potting soils are, I dunno.

You know, I do remember penicillin being mentioned when I visited the soil exhibit at the smithsonian.

Interesting posts & totally educational.

I had just panicked today when I checked on my recent soil mix and saw this fuzzy mould. Someone told me to stir it up and use; but then I find this.

Tells me I did something right. :)

Peace.
