Making Canna Salve

So yesterday I made some salve from buds that I made hash from and it turned out spotty like this.

s.jpg

First had the buds in coconut oil on the double boiler for some hours. Then I squeezed out the oil from the buds and put it back in the double boiler and added about third of a bar of shea butter and then a small piece of beeswax. Waited until the solids had dissolved, mixing around ever now and then with a knife, then into the jar the coconut oil came in and into the fridge.

I hope it's just uneven distribution of the different oils, not mold or something like that.

Ever had something like this happen @Janborrego?

No but I only use new buds. You said you made hash from the buds first. Since coconut oil is a carrier oil it shouldn’t be a mixture thing. I have never used shea butter in my salve. I use canna oil infused from coconut oil. I add vit E oil and black caster oil, and the beeswax also use premium skin grade lemon essential oil. It covers the smell of the weed and leave a fresh citrus scent. These are the salve I made. 2 different batches. The darker one was yellow bees wax. The lighter one is white bees wax. Both are smooth the darker one needed a bit more beeswax. I use triple amount of bees wax as it just needs it. The oilier version works fine but leaves you a bit greasy. The improved version rubs in completely.

Yeah I looked into the caster oil but it was quite expensive even compared to the shea butter so I just went with it again. I have used shea butter twice before and it didn't turn out like this either time. I'm thinking maybe there is water in the mix and I didn't use enough beeswax to emulsify it all. Wonder if mold could really grow so fast, while it cools down.. hope not. Beautiful looking salves btw.

You can use Extra virgin olive oil. The original recipe calls for EVOO. I switched to the caster oil because of the anti inflammatory properties. Any skin safe carrier oil can be subbed.

My updated recipe

1 1/3 C coconut infused canna oil
1/3 C caster oil black if you can get it
(Extra Virgin Olive Oil can be substituted)
1 1/2 C bees wax ( soy wax for vegan)
1-2 Tbs essential oil lemon works best
( make sure its skin grade )
Vit E oil 1 tbs

Using a double boiler melt the wax completely.
Turn off double boiler for the rest.
Add the caster and vit e oils mix well.
Add essential oil.
Poor into light proof containers
They will get solid quickly so be ready with containers.

The original recipe called for Extra Virgin Olive Oil or EVOO. I changed it to Black caster oil although sometimes I get just caster oil its cheaper here. TBH you can leave it out as the Evoo is being used as a carrier oil. Coconut oil is a carrier oil so you can omit. I put the exact recipe I use.

I've now done the olive oil with shea butter once and coconut oil with shea butter a couple of times. They smell and look different but both work well. Coconut oil one is more runny. The olive oil one stays put better but looks a bit off-putting, puslike.

This is how I make it. It is thick like a balm and rubs in completely. If you want it less thick use 1/2C less bees wax. It will be more oily but works well. I like it to disappear into my skin when I use it. I don't like feeling greasy.

He found the recipe! Here it is exactly as Beemer Bill posted it. He followed it step by step except using a blender. He didn't see the need.

Beemer Bill's Botanical Balm.

Things that you will need:
Crock pot
Blender
Containers to put it in.

Ingredients:

Good shake or bud
Coconut oil
Shea butter
Beeswax
Menthol crystals or peppermint crystals.
Tea tree oil
You can also put in a little E oil or Almond oil for better penetration.

I cook only on low with my pot and it goes to around 210 degrees with the lid on so I don't worry about overheating.

Recipe:

1 cup coconut oil
1 cup rough grind bud or shake
1/3 cup shea butter
1/2 cup beeswax
6 to 8 tablespoons of menthol crystals
Around 8-10 drops of Tea tree oil as a preservative

If you put E oil or almond oil in, you may need a little more beeswax. I have had to put everything back into the crock pot and reheat to add more beeswax. The beeswax makes it firm up and not turn into liquid in the heat of the summer or house.

Put the coconut oil and bud in the crock pot and cook for at least 3 hours. This is long enough to get all the goodies out of the bud and into the oil. I then strain it through a 120 mesh hash bag or you can use cheese cloth doubled up, and then put the oil back into the crock pot. It takes a lot of squeezing to get as much of the oil out as you can. Save the bud and make some brownies or the like with it.

Add the rest of the ingredients and cook for around an hour. This is where I put it into a blender and blend it for a couple of minutes, more or less. This really blends it and adds a little air to it for a better consistency. Pour into containers and enjoy.

This is Beemer's recipe. It's worked for him.

Maybe next time blend it, it may help.
