Zamal x Neville's Haze

C

Chamba

This is a "smoke report" that starts with, and is mainly about, the two crosses that make up this cross (Zamal and Neville's Haze), than an actual detailed smoke report about the cross.....

I grew out a few packs of GN Zamals and was very impressed with a few of the females. The Zamals were grown in the bush in a very old veggie patch that was overgrown, loosened up the hard clay soil, with a bit of fert pellets scattered around, planted 2 ~ 3 week old seedlings and being landrace sativas they soon took off and got to a decent size. The area was on a similar latitude/climate to la Reunion (where the seeds originally came from).

The buds had an earthy/carroty/veggie scent and the high was quite different from the other Asian tropical landraces I've grown. Though, only medium in potency, the high had many wonderful aspects. The high lasted for hours and it undulated, just when you thought it was faded and it was time for another jay, suddenly the high would be there again.

It's one of the few cannabis strains that should be banned by the Olympics, lol, especially for endurance/long distance events like cycling, walking etc, a Zamal inspired competitior would have a definte advantage. The energy was long lasting without a caffiene or paranoia edge to it and it gave me stamina like a locamotive while really zoning in with tunnel vision, I could smoke a big jay of Zamal and for the next 3 or 4 hours be tireless, efficient and switched-on at whatever I was doing.,,bush walking, cleaning the house or just reading or web surfing...

after a while I only smoked dry sifted Zamal resin.....which was harder hitting, cerebral, forehead sweating, marching powder madness.

the longer it was cured, the more it improved, and there were other aspects to the high too, it was very intelligent and trippy in a way that I often felt like (if I smoked enough of it) of watching myself from above which gave a new perspective of things..at the same time it took ages to put my shoes on! lol..if there was ever a strain that you could time travel with, a super strong example of Zamal would be a good starting point!

I crossed the best looking females with the males, making Z x Z, and made a cup full of seed which over the years has now dwindled down to just a 10 or so seeds.

The best Zamal females were crossed with a Neville's Haze male (I think it was High Quality Seeds strain, but can't be 100% sure, a friend bought the seeds over the counter in Am'dam). I was very impressed with this NH strain, the one's I grew outside were ideally suited to indoor growing being compact, with hard buds, big yielding and one femme had very strong potency but with lots more couch glue in the high than I expected.

I've grown out dozens of these Zam x NH crosses over the years and I'm smoking some fresh harvested of it now. It's good, but to be quite honest, the best of original NH or Zamals, from memory, were a slightly better smoke than the best of the Zam x NH crosses. The plants look slightly more like Zamal in growth, the finishing times vary slightly, all are long flowerers but the high is usually an even balance between the two strains.

I crossed those GN Zamals with lots of other strains at the time too..the best were the (C99xC99) x (ZxZ) crosses. The best of both worlds, some finish relatively quickly and the high is fun, the Zamal gives complexity and duration to the high while the Cindy adds resin, a fruity scent and lots of life and potency to the high..Cindy is a good strain to use in making crosses (especially long flowering strains)

anyway, the moral of the story is : make seeds everytime you grow seedlings, just dust a tiny amount of male pollen on a lower branch of a few promising looking femmes and you will have lots of seeds to give to friends and to grow and experiment with etc for years..and maybe one of those crosses will be a keeper!

smoking cannabis is good for many people....growing your own adds to the pleasure, but growing seeds you made yourself adds another dimension.....

Happy growing!

I liked your smoke report. The Zamal sounds like something I would love to grow-out. I have been searching for some really good day-time smoke and this sounds perfect.

Great write up Chamba, the description of the high sounds amazing,
when you say GN Zamal is that from Gypsy's lines?,
if it is i need to keep an eye out for this 1, sounds like everything i want in a strain:yes:

peace

Yes, the Zamal seed packs I got were bought from Gypsy Nirvana (former) seed shop in Amsterdam, when they were first released (I'm a bit foggy on exactly when I got them....was it 6 or 7 years ago??)

Zamal, like many tropical sativas, falls into the catagory of strains you'd like to smoke rather than grow...lol..you can grow a 8 week strain, harvest it, reveg, reflower and re-harvest it again long before a Zamal could be mature enough for harvesting.

Hey Chamba,
great thread ! I love your description of the zamal... I had some Australian genetics which has this undulated high, that i love ! It s so strange to be so high after 3 or four hours, just few minutes after you dont feel really high ;-)
making seeds is definetly really nice as you say ! It is such a pleasure to grow his own !
a friend of mine (Nelumbo) worked on neville haze and zamal hybrid, told me that introducing some good NorthernLight Genetics should be a very good idea, it improves the high, the indoor growing, and the yield...
keep the good job, i ld love to see some picts ;-)

Nice!

I'd also love to see some pictures of this beautiful strain you've been growing for years. Do you let some of the plants mature over multiple years? In which latitude are you growing and what kind of "fertilizer pellets" were you using? Lovely report, thanks for sharing.

There doesn't seem to be any of this cross even available anymore. I hate that I missed out on all the good stuff :(

The Zamal x Nev Haze cross was done by Chamba THC.. If your interested in the Zamal though I found those still for sale at the SeedBoutiquehttp://https://www.seedboutique.com/store/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=25&products_id=357

Great report Chamba... You make the zamal sound really tempting.. The high sounds to be just what you would want for a day time smoke.. She's prolly not suited for my grow tent though:wink:

Thanks for spreading some knowledge on the Zamal will be keeping my ears open to see if it comes around. Can't help but me amazed by all the diversity in the cannabis genetics. Nice

I seen this, but it looks like an outdoor variety. I'm looking for a hybrid of Zamal, I think my room is too small to grow out just the Zamal, plus I work with 12/12.

to get the best out of most long duration flowering landrace sativas like Zamal, it's best to grow clones of seedlings under the sun in an area with a mild Fall/Winter, harvest "late" and give it a slow dry and a long glass bottle cure.

you really need to germinate 10 seeds to be sure of getting one ~ three females.......one or two will be male, one or two won't germinate and some or many of the females will show male flowers

do a forum search here for more posts about Zamal.

Great description of the high. The Zamal sounds like the kind of herb id like to have on hand at all times!

ideally suited to indoor growing being compact, with hard buds, big yielding and one femme had very strong potency but with lots more couch glue in the high than I expected.
but this does not sound like Nevils Haze. I have neither grown nor smoked NH but am very interested in it. from what i have gathered the NH is aprox 75% haze, grows tall fast, 14+ weeks flowering, trippy and intense high, with airy buds.

regardless, thanks for the great report!

there have been many different versions of NH offered over the years, a friend went to Am'dam in the 90's and gifted me half a pack of "Neville's Haze", I think these were bought at Interpolm (the grow shop that used to be opposite the train station) and the seed package was "High Quality" seeds, but I'm not sure. To me, the high, the dried buds and the look of the plant seemed no where near a 75% sativa ..but then again I was growing Thais at the time, so the NH were way more couchier, chunkier and faster. Maybe if I had been growing couch lock indicas, I would of described that NH as active, up and slow to finish.
I visited Amsterdam for the first time in the early nineties, checked out Interpolm on the first day, there was a table and chairs at the back of the big shop.....what blew me away was how guys would sit down and pull out kilo bags of bud , hold them up and start negotiating loudly while waving these bags around, which was the opposite to what I was used to as I was living in a country that was big into the "War on Cannabis" at the time.....welcome to Amsterdam.

Getting busted for dealing like that at home would of meant the death penalty at first, then later appealed down to 10 ~ 15 years..at Interpolm, all those guys had to worry about was if their car might be towed away!

Thanks for the report. It brought back memories of my 2008 FMS Zamal x Skunk Special grow, it also had the trippy clear high. :) Also very carrot smelling.
