Zak Haze

Zak Haze is a local cross with a very special story
Killer Haze(Killer Queen x SSH) x
Strawberry Cough = Zak Haze

This strain is dedicated to one of our dear family members that is no longer with us, Zak Hayes. Zak, was a dear friend, committed cannabis activist, and a true believer in the healing powers of medical cannabis. Being a cystic Fibrosis patient with an inherited life threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system never got him down, never slowed his enthusiasm and never ever, became a crutch or an excuse. The fact that he knew he had a short ride ahead of him never dampened his vision of the future. In fact, it fueled his passion and drove him to become a well respected member of the New Mexico medical cannabis industry. In his short career, Zak worked with several of New Mexico’s finest producers and was well liked and loved by his co-workers and managers alike. He made an impression wherever he went. Zak has been part of Organtica’s family since the very beginning and was there every step of the way.

Many of us in the community were devastated at his passing and as we struggled to find sense in it all, we wondered what Zak would have thought about it.

The answer was pretty clear; we needed to develop a strain and dedicate it to our friend and, thus, the Organtica strain Zak Haze was conceived.

The funny thing about Karma is, it works both ways. In this case we developed a great strain that came in with a respectable THC count of 20.75%, and after sifting through test results we discovered a little secret. Not only was Zak Haze high in THC it also had an unusually high CBG-A content of 1.2%.

So What? Who cares about CBG-A?

If you are a patient, you do. The bottom line on CBG-A is this; it’s the magic ingredient that makes the cannabinoids work together as medicine. To put it in other words; Cannabigerolic acid (CBGa) is formed when geranyl pyrophosphate combines with olivetolic acid within the cannabis plant. It is thanks to CBGa that all other medicinal effects of cannabis are possible. Cannabigerolic acid (CBGa) can be thought of as the stem cell cannabinoid, which becomes THCa/THC, CBDa/CBD, CBCa/CBC, and CBG. It does this through different types of biosynthesis, where chemicals combine to form new compounds, examples being the THC biosynthase and the CBD biosynthase.

CBG-A is:
Analgesic – Relieves pain.
Antibacterial – Slows bacterial growth.
Anti-inflammatory – Reduces inflammation systemically.
Anti-Proliferative – Inhibits cancer cell growth through apoptosis.

To put it simply; This is a really tasty flower that is also great medicine that just happens to honor our dear friend.
Would you like to be able to grow your very own Zak Haze? Stay tuned, we have some exciting news to share regarding Zak Haze clones coming in the very near future.

This is my first go with this strain, so I will update with pictures and a smoke report. I was told she was an eight week "indica" cultivar. I find that odd given the lineage, but I guess you never know what will pop up in a poly-hybrid.

I want to get this cultivar and her story out there. She is being grown in Fox Farms Coco Loco and fed Biocanna nutrients when needed. She is being flowered under 86 watts of off-the-shelf LED. Here she is at the first day of 12/12.

I finally get to try some Zak Haze. They didn't have any buds, but I got a gram pre-roll to try. I ripped off about 2/3 of the joint and fired up the little bit. The flavor/aroma was myrcene dominant with floral undertones. Nothing special in that department. The smoke was smooth and the joint would have stayed lit if I didn't keep forgetting about it. The high is interesting and different, I can see why people like it. It was a narcotic type high with strong body effects, but it didn't give me couch lock. My friend with MS loves this strain for that reason. The rosin yielded pretty good for a pre-roll. The rosin dabs were much more flavorful and the high a bit cleaner. I can't wait until I have a bit of my own to play with making some hash. The packaging is top notch!

Here is the Zak Haze after one week flowering. You can barely see the tomatoe cage anymore, so much for little to no stretch. I've had to train the main tops along the tomatoe cage and lower the pot to keep her from rubbing against the lights. She is trying to burst out of this cab.

I finally got off my ass and transplanted these five Zak Haze clones. The timing was pretty good, as the roots were just starting to wrap around the bottom.

Here they are in the cabinet basking under the 150w CMH. I will veg them for a few weeks until they are 2/3 of the screen high, then flip to 12/12. The clone in my filing cabinet had a decent amount of stretch, so I will allow for that.

Speaking of the one in my filing cabinet, here she is at 30 days 12/12. I had my doubts about her being an eight week strain, but looking at them now I can see it. She is starting to get a little fade on those old, big fan leaves.

Everything else looks healthy, so I fed her as normal. The buds are ridiculously close to the ceiling, but filling in nicely. I didn't expect much stretch, but the tomatoes cage saved the day.

When I removed a few of the fan leaves, they smelled fantastic. Very citrus smelling. She is a real finger sniffer.

Nice looking grow and set-up. Like the PVC tube screens you made. Hope all goes well for the grow.

Here you can see Zak Haze at 41 daze with the lights off. As you can see she is burning some tops on the lights. She has been a rather strange hybrid, she looks and stretches like a sativa, but then starts flowering and ripens up very quick! Similarly the high is body stone without couch lock. So far I'm smelling dank and lemon with a pinch of pine. I will definitely take her at day 56.

Here are the Zak Haze clones in the vertical screens. I pruned some lower branches, trained the branches to the screen, then tucked the fan leaves behind the screen. They should be flipped to 12/12 in a day or two. I remember how much the other stretched.

Here they are back around the bulb. They got watered with CalMag. Tieing the branches down will cause the secondary branching to stretch a bit and, hopefully, fill in the screen better.

Harvest time has come for the Zak Haze. She was flowered for 56 days, then had 48 hours of darkness. There is a lot more than I expected, looks like I'll get close to 50 grams dry.
picture.php

Here is a rough trim, I will let her dry a day or two then trim the rest before it is dry. She is pretty leafy and looks like it will take some time to trim. I will run the trim through the bubble bags fresh.
picture.php

So I ended up having to dry trim the Zak Haze. My guess wasn't too bad, I had 38 grams of trimmed buds at 60-65 %RH in the jars. I had another 10 grams of very frosty trim. Not really enough to make bubble with.
picture.php

So let's press It! The overall color is a little dark, I could probably press this cultivar at a lower temperature. Yields were good, about 17.5% from 10 grams of trim/popcorn. The flavor is delightful, fruity with a hint of pine and lemon. The high is stoney at the back of the head with a nice bit of energy. I can't wait to smoke a joint of the cured flowers.
