And you thought Flir is invasion of privacy? ;p

As the privacy controversy around full-body security scans begins to simmer, it’s worth noting that courthouses and airport security checkpoints aren’t the only places where backscatter x-ray vision is being deployed. The same technology, capable of seeing through clothes and walls, has also been rolling out on U.S. streets...

Disturbing, I wonder what they are using it for on the streets?

One step closer to "total" government.

Will the tires on the spy van withstand a rifled 12 gauge hunting slug?

to find what might be in a car or a U-haul ( remember Oklahoma fed building?) parked near a federal building or courthouse, military base , airports etc, international border, the border check points out in Cali to find 30 people or 10 tons in a u-haul.

Actually the government doesn't need to spy on us U.S. citizens because most of the young and middle age people are posting everything about themselves / families and friends online through all the various means of online media. Then throw in security cameras from private business to gov. cameras and any jackhole with a cell phone and your digital cable box. Next keep on using them your club cardsand stuff that track your buying habbit. Oh yeah I also most forgot your own cell phone. All the government or a prosecutors has to do is subpoena the information from any of the business that hold information, more and more are doing so. Pretty soon they will have t.v.'s with a built in camera, then we'll hear about people being spied on through their t.v. cam or mic. The last generation I'd say since '98 has been raised on posting everything online and see no problem with it so why should they see anything wrong with this.

Why? Do you long to spend the next 20 years in federal prison?

Somehow, I doubt you'd ever test that theory.

Unless you like the idea of being charged with firing a shotgun at a Police/DEA/FBI van. You know, things like Attempted Murder on a Police Officer, Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, not to mention the multiple firearms enhancements that would kick in during the sentencing phase.

As a Donor with over 2200 posts, I would expect a more mature, well-though-out response.

You are right. I saw the correct post count after the post. Sorry about that :)

The internet tough guy phenomena really bugs me and serves to further justify to LEO why they need to put marijuana growers/users in prison when they see things like this on this website.

LEO is already working on a flawed principle by enforcing marijuana prohibition. We don't need to help them justify their position.

Yeah I agree you definitely had the Internet tough guy thing going on, I was simply wondering if the van had good tires.

It's time to change your evil ways sinner!

He is right folks!! Don't shoot the tires...shoot the driver!! Tires can't ID you!!

The back scatter can see into vehicles, The article doesn't say what the range of the xray is capable of. So could the cops drive by and see in your house, building, grow room etc. Although the xray can only see in straight lines, another words it needs to be on the same plane as what its looking toward, xray beams don't bend. And yes radiation is what they give off not sure what type. Interesting to know the vans are on the road. Wonder where they use them the most.

And yes radiation is what they give off not sure what type.

All radiation (radio waves, infrared, visible light, X-rays, Gamma rays etc) are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The position on the spectrum can be expressed in terms of frequency measured in Hertz (abbreviated Hz)

X-ray radiation is a type of high frequency radiation above UV but below the frequency of Gamma radiation (there is some overlap between X-ray and Gamma.)

X-rays are in the frequency range of 30 petahertz to 30 exahertz, are quite energetic (ionizing) and are a health hazard. "Hard" or "penetrating" X-rays used by this (and other) devices are the highest energy type of X-ray.

As for the "backscatter" device itself:

The effective distance of the device will be determined by the peak voltage of the source.
I cannot give an "effective distance" without knowing what restrictions the end users (leo) are under regarding the amount of radiation they are allowed to output, or the power of the source.

I doubt they would be able to drive around and "scan" everything/anything. Outputting X-rays can pose some serious hazards both to health/safety and private/government property.

But if they did use it against you, there would be no way of preventing this device from seeing into your house, car, body etc.

Unless you want to shield your entire house in lead...

I wonder,

Mr. M
