not the old, mythical "water burn spots" again...

This does not happen. I water my outdoor gardens with the sprinkler in the sun and this does not happen. It definitely is impossible with artificial light indoors.

The plant is 3 weeks old and has not been fed. They are starting to yellow from the bottom up from lack of food. The plant is eating the lower leaves to maintain growth.

HP, I hate to disagree with someone as experienced as you, but... How hard is your water? If there's enough carbonates, you'll see spots when it dries. When I've seen them myself, I just assumed they were from the hardness, I could be wrong?

Really, that's a nutrient deficiency? I recently got this (or something very similar looking and sounding) on two plants at the same time. I thought (out of ignorance) that it could have something to do with temperature. (it was 61 that day.)
