New York's brief reprieve from snow ends
POSTED: 5:57 a.m. EST, February 10, 2007

MEXICO, New York (AP) -- Ray DeLong took advantage of a break from the snow to use a blower to forge a path to his driveway as two contractors pushed streams of snow from the roof of his home.

The brief reprieve Friday ended early Saturday as snow fell at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour, further burying a region already tested by nearly record snowfalls.

"Have to move fast. Want to at least get it off my roof," DeLong said, just hours before more flakes began to fall.

More than a week of bitter cold and slippery roads have contributed to at least 20 deaths across the northern quarter of the nation -- five in Ohio, four in Illinois, four in Indiana, two in Kentucky, two in Michigan, and one each in Wisconsin, New York and Maryland, authorities said.

No deaths were reported in Oswego County, where Mexico is located, however.

By 9 p.m. Friday a heavy lake effect band started to intensify over the county, said Tony Ansuini, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Officials expected up to 14 inches of snow overnight, a trend that would push the seven day total beyond 100 inches and continue through the weekend.

For DeLong and most of this village's 5,400 citizens, it has been exhausting.

"This is right up there with the best of them, almost as bad as the Blizzard of '66. But there ain't nothing good about this much snow," he grumbled as his snowblower clogged and stalled.

Located in upstate New York's snowbelt, Mexico residents every two or three years see a 5- or 6-foot snowfall. But even hardened locals are amazed at the scenes before them now, such as the site of parked SUVs noticeable only because their antennas or roof racks crack the snow's surface.

Persistent squalls have pounded Mexico and other Oswego County communities along eastern Lake Ontario since Sunday, leading Gov. Eliot Spitzer to declare a state disaster emergency in the county.

Unofficially, the snow measured 123 inches in Orwell and 122 inches in North Redfield, small hamlets in the county's eastern half.

Parish received 94 inches and Scriba reported 92 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Mexico Mayor Terry Grimshaw said his village was blanketed by seven feet.

Overnight, the lake effect band walloping Oswego was expected to move on to Lewis and Jefferson Counties.

Down the village's main street, 6-foot high snowbanks make the sidewalks look like mini-canyons.

With a day's reprieve, most of the village roads were cleared Friday, although schools were canceled for a fifth straight day.

The state transportation department has loaned several pieces of equipment to local municipalities as they work round the clock to remove snow from streets and sidewalks. The state was also expected to send workers to help in the removal effort.

Although authorities have reported few problems because of the snow, in Oswego, Fire Chief Ed Geers said his firefighters have had to help three ambulances that got stuck in the snow.

Out of curiousity, which ICers are having to deal with all the snow right now?

Not too sure that any snow would stick here ,Niki. Sorry that it is so cold there. It is 4:30 in the morning here and the temp is 55. Expected to be a high of 83 today. Want me to send you cold Floridians some warm air?

:joint: Just got a tad of the white crap this week - first snowflakes in February, go figure. No snow but the temps hit the deepfreeze, lucky to hit 25 this week - but never had a hurricane or tornado think of takin us out, or fall into a sinkhole. Come to think of it, no wildfires, droughts, mudslides or earthquakes either, some greater power is trying to tell Forida and California it's a great place to visit but don't live there. :pointlaug

Wonder when the tsunami is gonna wipe both out...... :yoinks:

No kidding, lol. Maybe it's nature's way of saying "There's enough idiots here already! No more!"

On a related note to that, Wolf & I saw a bumper sticker once that read:
"Florida's closed. GO HOME."
:biglaugh:

And nah, Pops, it's plenty warm enough here. I prefer it in the 70's, and with the right humidity, the 60's in the winter down here's perfect :D

Ironically, the Tampa Bay area (my area) hasn't had a direct hit from a major hurricane in well over 30, maybe 40 years. It's kind of a bad thing, because people here have gotten a bit too complacent about it---"We won't get any hurricanes over here, that's for the southern tip & the east coast." Yeah, give it a few years and I'll hand you a spoon. We're overdue, big-time.

A mild hurricane knocking out power for a few minutes or a few hours doesn't phase anyone at all around here anymore. Hurricane Frances (Hurricane Charley year) knocked out power here for 4 or 5 days, and Jeanne shortly afterwards knocked out power for a whopping 4 hours. Luckily, there was next to no damage from those storms outside of fallen tree limbs, and zero damage up here from Charley at all.

yep besides its laws Florida is a pretty nice place to live. I can walk to the beach though I hardly go there. lol go figure. though it is nice to go have a joint on there in the early morning. Also my area (Daytona Beach) hasn't had a direct hit by a hurricane ever I believe. Hurricane Charlie came right over us but it had to go across the state first so it was enervated. I personally like hurricanes though. As long as they don't do too much damage.

Also we do get wildfire in the summer (dont know if niki was here in 98) but yea its not as common though does happen. But I'm safe cause I live on a pennesula less then a mile wide surrounded by a river and an ocean.

for those of us on THIS forum, there is almost no way you could imply that Florida, with its fascist police-state and Bush for Governor, is a better place to live than California. How are the medical marijuana laws in FL? HAHAHAHAHA F that! Even with all those old people there will never be MMJ there cuz of the religious fascists.

And f the cold! I was in Toronto last weekend and it was -30 degrees (C) (and the weed wasn't even good!). Boy was it nice to come back to an 88 degree (F) day (last monday). I hate the cold, but i hate Florida and it nazi laws and redneck conservatives--and for FUCKING THE WHOLE COUNTRY in 2000!!! I would never ever ever live in that hell hole, especially with increasing global warming--the best parts will be inundated with water soon enough, so get insurance if you can. Biblical style, for all those damn religious zealots in FL. And Palm Beach and the superrich? Don't get me started.

South Beach is OK for a weekend of debauchery, but that's about it.

That said, yes, be afraid of earthquakes and wildfires, it's all so scary in CA, so stay wherever you are. :moon: I'll go blaze some OG Kush i grew from one of the clones widely available here and quiver in fear in my pool as i watch the sun set over the ocean. :woohoo:

Yeah, I was here in '98. Been here since '89, save for a year in South Korea.
I remember '98 being a particularly bad year for wildfires........Was that the year 1/2 of rural North port was burned to a crisp, too?

so one of his republican deputies took over. does that really make a difference? it's still a fascist police state. get out before you lose your property to water or police...

just kidding. to each their own, but do be safe. I'll admit, in winter the warm humid weather in FL is nice, but come May it is way too sweltering for me. Summer, forget it, i am too much of a sweaty guy. I prefer the dry desert air/heat.

I believe so. All I remember is picking up burnt pieces of palm frons cause they would get picked up and blown.

I love the snow and the cold weather. If you dress correctly, it can be quite enjoyable, Luke (my dog) seems to love it too.

I'll take tons of snow and cold over that florida heat anyday!

I'm super sensitive to heat, and anything over about 70 feels like 100 to me. (actually anything between about 75 and 110 doesn't feel any different to me...just HOT and Miserable)

Heat makes me nauseous, un-able to sleep, headaches, un-able to eat, cranky, etc...

during the summer I'm only able to sleep about 2 hrs a night, and I eat only 1 small meal a day (usually breakfast). ...during the winter I eat and sleep perfectly normal.
(I really need to get back to AK)

...so dont feel bad for me either, I'm in heaven when it's cold.
