X2 Carbon Scrubber, What do you all think of this?

Hello all,

I'm looking for a solution to stinky buds, but I'm on a tight budget. If I had the money I would prolly buy a Vortex 6" inline blower and a Phat filter. But since my money is so tight right now I've begun looking for other solutions. I found the following scrubber on ebay.

X2 Carbon Scrubber

It's $70, plus $28 shipping. can you check it out and let me know what you think. It's going to be handling a room that is about 4'x7'. Think it can do the job? Any alternatives in the same price range?

I seriously doubt that will handle a 4x7 room...You can easily build a scrubber for $100 that will handle that area much more adequately.

so what size scrubber (pounds of activated carbon), would you say i need to hndle a room that size. I would like to save a little money by building my own, only thing is if I build my own filter then wouldn't i have to spend more money on a blower?

You're gonna need a real fan no matter what for a room that size...especially if you're exhausting air from the room via that scrubber (vs. sealed room). My rule of thumb for making a scrubber is 1lb of tightly packed carbon 2" thick per 10cfm. A 24" long 4"IDx8"OD scrubber will handle about 15lbs of carbon...but it can vary depending on the size of the carbon particles. You can get 25lbs of good quality coco carbon off ebay for around $40...snag a 10' roll of hardware cloth, a small roll of window screen, a couple of duct end caps and tabbed duct starters and you should get out of of it for around $75. I've got a how to that I wrote on building em - if you want it, PM me and I'll send it to ya...there's also lots of how to's posted here that will basically accomplish the same thing.

I built my own scrubber outta a small plastic garbage can from walmart, with a lid that has clasps to hold it in place. Some wire mesh, a pair of ladys stockings and some ducting and duct tape. You can mix the pure crystal kitty litter with the carbon if ya like to make it go further. I just get a couple of jars of carbon from Walmart in the fish section, and some First Step crystal Kitty litter( no clay added), and mix it together. Fill the scrubber. I've been using mine for over a year now. Refilled once. The fan is where the moneys at.

Cheers,

Ya sorry that thing looks like a toy, I ckecked the demo on Utube and was less than impressed with the bag demo, my 6" elicient would have sucked the air out of it in like 1/2 a second.
Invest in a in a centrifugal fan like the Vortex, they are good and worth the money.
Set it up on a "solid state" type dimmer like the ones for ceiling fans and it will let you control the flow of air.
I've built 2 scrubbers for my closet can, it was easy and relatively cheap, the carbon is the most expensive.
Use MTF-Shamans DIY, he is a wise and respected grower in my book

SB - hey man , I have to check that kitty liter shit out.

Just a tip on the scrubber, make sure to pack the carbon in the scrubber as tightly as you can, you want a vacum where the air forced thru the carbon and not some hole or air pocket in the scrubber.

Gotta agree with everyone on the good fan. It is a must.

For a budget carbon scrubber, you can do what I did.

Five gallon bucket with lid ($8 @ Walmart). Swiss cheese it with a one inch hole saw or spade bit.

Grab some spray adhesive($4) and window screening ($2) from wally world. Or, if you don't particularly care about aesthetics (I don't, no one's gonna see it), use aluminum duct tape. Spray the adhesive around the bucket, wrap window screen around it. Or Tape it in one spot so it's on tightly, then a thin strip around the bottom and top of screen to seal it off.

Grab some small opening hardware cloth from Home Depot or Lowe's (it'll be in the fencing area - $5). Bend it in a cylinder so it fits into the bucket with about two inches to spare, and is even with the top of the bucket. Wire it together (or whatever method is easiest for you) so it holds its shape. Wrap it in window screening. Then affix it securely to the bottom of the bucket (I used 60 second epoxy from WalMart).

Now, fill it with your carbon. I used the 9oz carbon jars, once again, from Wal-Mart. 4 filled it up for me ($24). Tap and shake as you fill it to get it compacted some. Better deal on carbon is from the guy on ebay, but you'll pay more after shipping, but have plenty for changes down the road.

Cut a hole in the lid that fits your fan. Put fan in hole, seal with duct tape, and done.

Works beautifully.
