WTF is wrong with my seeds....please help

Okay so here is the deal. Bought 10 Double Dutch seeds from Magnus Genetics.

Soaked for a couple hours and put in damp paper towel on a light heat source. (A few plates above a 10W cfl)

Two cracked and showed small taproots. 2 cracked and have done absolutely nothing. and 1 has done nothing at all.

I have never, ever had a problem germing in the past but these seeds are having difficulties. After 4 days in the papertowel and nothing much happening I put them all into their rockwool cubes which had been sokaed for a day in buffered, distilled water which was changed a few times. Put the cubes in a humidity dome above a light heat source with no light on them.

Today there is still not much going on.....am I just impatient or what...as I have said usually my germs have been quick and small plants are up in a week from putting them in paper towel.

I am a little pissed....I go out and pay a premium for seeds and this is what I get?

Please someone give me some advice...I am very frustrated.

donatello22...

I have some Double Dutch running from Magus... Some lovely ones indeed...

My germ rates were successful, I'd suggest giving it a few days... I'm sure if you have a genuine problem, that you'll be taken care of. There's a few good breeders out there that take care of their customers and Gerrit is one of 'em...

Be patient, give it a little time, and if you find you're in the same boat, Kindly come forward with your problem.

Hope the best for ya.....

Yes, be respectful and you will be helped if necessary. No smack talkin the breeders, that's fo sho.

I must apologize for any disrespect that you guys may have perceived. I chose the double dutch because of the favourable reviews of the breeder but you must understand my frustration. I will give it a few more days but from the looks of the 2 that have taproots it doesn't seem good.

Berry: what method did you use to germ...I fear that the leaving in the papertowel until they showed evidence of popping (2-3 days) may have done them harm.

Your advice would be much appreciated. And again I did not mean any disrespect to magnus.

Hello Donatello,

Although I'm personally not a fan of the paper towel method they should have shown some growth in a weeks time, is it possible that you somewhat cooked them?
If not, please let me know the name of your supplier and the batchnumber that was on the package so I have any idea if they are genuine and reasonably fresh.

Gerrit

PS. it's Magus not Magnus ;-)

Hey, that's real nice, I'll be looking up your stuff just for the customer care!

It's a funny thing, I recently put some seeds to germ on my window sill and even though it's winter, the sun here gets pretty hot, I think I may have cooked 'em like you say, they are eerily calm... lol
Mine is from bagseed but heard the bud was black so I'm excited, I still have three left in case I did indeed cook them :spank:

Donatello, just be happy it was not that much money. I am sorry to hear about your lack of sprouted seeds, but all is not lost. I would leave the seeds for a minimum for 2 weeks after the first seed sprouts... Some seeds may take much longer to germinate, sometimes even requiring you to do other techniques on the seed(scoring/pre-cracking/soaking).
Germination rates are also somewhat determined by lineage. I have heard much of the Deep Chunk seeds and one of the most common things I hear of them are the extremely poor germination rate. People paying 250 US for just a 10 pack on seedbay and then ONE of the ten sprout... or even none...
So Donatello, have any other Double Dutch seeds breached shell with taproot?

Hey Geritt...Magus...little typo...its awesome to hear from you so promptly...now that is some serious customer care. Really can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Anyways, I really don't think that I cooked them because I raised the two plates that were sanwiched containing the towel and seeds off of the lamp by 3 more plates and double checked to see that it wasnt getting overly warm. I am not home this evening so I won't be able to get that info for you atm but I did have a chance to check on the seeds again briefly and there is no movement whatsoever from the two that had taps and partial seed shedding.

I have had a 100% success rate with the paper towel method in the past so its strange that it went awry this time. I will leave the seeds a few more days until I try the remaining 5 that I have. Maybe next time around I will try going without the light heat source alltogether and see how it goes. I will also get you that info asap just so you can check into it. The supplier though was everyonedoesit.co.uk

In the mean time...do you have any suggestions for an alternate germ method so I can get prepped?

Thanks in advance

Donatello

You are right...not too much money...but gladly geritt has offered some help.

As of yet I have not had a chance to check on them today...busy/girlfriends...but yesterday the two that had breached with taps showing still show no sign of movement in the rw and the other three, one of which had what loooked like a breaching tap, still show no movement whatsoever. I fear the worst but I will leave them a day or two more before I start over with the remaining 5.

Cheers

UPDATE:

I checked on the seeds today and the two with partial shedding and tiny taps are shrivelling and I am pretty sure they are dead/dying. The other three show no signs of any progress...so back to square one.

Geritt: there were two numbers...one under the label and one on the envelope containing the seeds
Label:857 Envelope: D01P07

I will wait to hear back from you until i move forward.

Are the tap root coming out brown? If it's shriveling up, it could have gotten damping off or some other fungus if the seeds were stable and ripe.....

Well presumably they were. It very well may have been my fault trying to keep them moist...but I am still waiting for confirmation from Gerrit. Also...is important to use RO water or will distilled work fine? I have never used RO water and always had 100% germ.

I put my seeds in rockwool in a humidity dome and get really good results. Never had a bad run yet. Some of my personal bred seeds from years ago pop within a few days!
Tap water is what i use to germ. I just recently started to clone in order to not have to buy seed. However, i have already aquirred good genetics.
Good luck

Thanks nav...I am thinking of just going out and buy some perlite and new rw starter cubes so I have some options when I decide to go ahead. How wet do you get your rw cubes? and what temps are they stored at? in the dark?

thanks

See you just proved a good point with this quote

Also...is important to use RO water or will distilled work fine? I have never used RO water and always had 100% germ.

RO water has no micronutrients which is extremely important for proper seed germination. I would use tap water for seedlings, but I would let it sit out for at least 24 hours before using it.
A filter like a tap water filter would help remove any impurities from the water if it's changed on time.
I would never recommend using RO water, distilled water on seedlings up until they are about 2 1/2 weeks of age.

If you are going to use RW cubes, you need to pH adjust them, you soak them for 24 hours in pH adjusted water. They are akaline so if you are going to put them into a hydro setup they need to be within a hydro range, for soil you would use the soil range.

i get them just wet enough so when i squeeze them i get a meer drip.keep my temps around 75 to 78 and give the first 24 hours in the dark. Always make sure to check the ph 5.6 for a day or so like stitch says!

Sorry Donatello,

Its the busy/hectic time of the year so I'm a bit sloppy with answering.
The batch number confirms that they are fresh (less than one year old) so that's not likely the problem.

I never make a big issue of germing seeds, I simply put them approx 5mm in the medium and keep moist and warm, after a few days most sprouts will come up.
Even with the use of rw cubes (rarely happens) I use tap water that I don't even adjust, never had problems.
I'll suggest that you try again with the rest of the seeds, skipping the wet-towels and seeding straight in the medium (whatever you use).
