Was browing the forums and saw a commotion out of the corner of my eye outside in the ceedar tree. Looked over and there was a barred owl with a big black mouse siting in the sunshine (it was about 9:38am), I reached for my digital point and shoot and snapped a few shots, might have one with the mouse! Let me check them and I'll upload what I shot in a sec and edit the post.

Heres the first shot through the window, full sized.

Heres the second, trying to get under the branch in the way, full sized.

Heres one after I put on my slippers and went outside to take a pic, the white things are a cloths line, the owl is in between the two white lines. Pic was cropped a bit to get my neighbors house out.

When I went outside there were little birds EVERYWHERE all making a lot of noise, he looked at me and I took the last pic there. After that I moved to the left to get all the crap out of the way and maybe get a lil closer and he looked at me once more for a few seconds and flew off. Was cool never had a cam on hand when I have gotten close to owls before. The pics were taken closer than they look because the cam blows stuff up.

There's an owl near by my house that likes to sit in a tree opposite my bedroom window and make screeching noises on random occasions.

I've never actually seen him though, I just hear the howling 'woooooooooooooooooooooo'

I've never seen one hunting/eating before, seen a lot of owls though.

That's a cool post Deft! Never mind the haters... I'm a city-slicker so I always tend to get jealous when I see pics of nature's finest like the ones you posted. Beautiful animal... :bandit:

I had an owl fly right by me onetime, what a graceful flyer , all I felt was a slight breeze, and he camped out on top of the house for the longest time.. :joint:

That's cool. Owl are powerful creatures. I always like seeing them. Once we had one fly down our chimney. I looked in the fireplace and he was just staring at me. Fairly small. Luckily, we had the glass doors shut. I called the animal control but they told me it was my responsibility to get it out of there.... I had to put some gloves on and reach in to grab him... luckily he let me and we set him free. Thanks for the pics.

A bout twenty years ago, I was driving down an old country road at night and there was a great horned owl sitting in the road, blinded by my headlights. I had been drinking and decided I wanted to catch him so I put on a pair of leather gloves and got out to get him. I walked right up to him and he didnt fly so I grabbed him around the neck and he started wing beating me. I got ahold of one of his legs and when I did the owl stuck a talon right through my glove and all the way through my hand between my thumb and point finger just like it was warm butter. Needless to say I let go. The next day my hand swelled up and I ended up having to go to the doctor for antibiotics. This thing pained and throbbed for a week. I think we all know the moral of the story, lol........

I dont know if its cause im high or what, but that story made me laugh my ass off JJ. I have a similar one that involves a cardinal and its beak.

Very cool pictures deft. That would be a treat to see

A bird in the hand hurts twice as much as two in the bush, hehe. I saw a peregrine falcon two weeks ago, flew into a tree by a lake, and after watching for a few minutes, it swooped down and took a small bird in midair over a harvested cornfield, just a swoop, dip, and wiggle, and it was all over, very cool stuff.

Awsome pics. Love prey birds.
My buddy lives in the boonies and has alot of big ass owls.
Some have wingspans of 4'....
Took his small dog outside one night, heard a screetch and some commotion in the bushes and then a big owl with what looked like his dog taking off down the hill. Never saw the dog again.
He has lost a cat to one as well.
Thanks for sharing your encounter.
Stay peaceful

Nice pics, but it's not a "Barred" owl. That's a Barn owl. :biglaugh:

We have them in my neighborhood down here in south-west FL, too, along with Great Horned owls and Screech owls--those little dinky guys that don't seem to be afraid of humans---had one land on my bike's handlebars a few years ago, great night shot, but it's on my old hard drive from my junked previous comp, can't piggy back the drive into this dinky machine to post the pic because there's no room for a second drive....

I haven't done it for a few years, but owl calling is a real hoot, pun intended. You can purchase owl calls on CD... go out into the forest and play the call, then stop for about 15 seconds, then play it again, etc. If you listen closely, eventually you may hear, in between your "calls", the return call of another owl. Every time it responds to you it will be closer, until it sits in the trees right above you.

Have a powerful flashlight or spotlight on you and you'll be able to shine it right on him/her... for some reason they aren't bothered at all by the bright light. It's a very cool way to spend an evening. If you're in love with Ma Nature like I am.

Yea I'm fairly shure its a barred as we only get screech barred and great horned around here that I have seen, I've been told there are no more barn lef tin the area. We only get woods owls not field owls as there are not many fields.
