oh i was just posting about trans-genic plants and how scientists spliced out the genes that code for THC synthesis and introduced them into a plasmid vector (bacterium).....then the scientists put these genetically modified bacteria into a tobacco plant and via conjugation (bacteria "sexual intercourse") genes were exchanged and the tobacco plant became endowed with the THC enzyme machinery of a Cannabis plant.....then when a solution containing THC precursors was poured into this Tobacco plant's roots the Tobacco plant began to express THC on its surface.....

whew! that was difficult to write out.....

ive been clean of tobacco for over a year now...i try to steer clear of it if i can so even if it had weed on it, i doubt it smoke it over the real thing :joint:

I would be very interested seeing links on that since I find it damn near impossible to think that any branch of science is going to pony up the dough to fund a project to incorporate any aspect of an illegal controlled substance into a commercially consumable product. Especially since theres plenty of other plant species to work with that dont carry the legal ramifications as does THC and tobacco.

I'm dubious because i am finding no mention of this online but, I do know there is ongoing genetics work being done on cannabis to isolate the genes responsible for thc expression of thc, the goal being eliminating it from commercial hemp/fiber lines of cannabis. In addition when isolating genes, introducing them into another species is done commonly to see if they do what you think they do and for practical reasons that I don't recall tobacco is often the choice for a host.

(Yes they have made glow in the dark tobacco)

The tobacco plant has been studied extensively and is used as a "guniea pig" for experiments. I liked it when they spliced bio-luminescent genes into a tobacoo plant's genome......the whole plant glowed.......It looked pretty cool.......I wanted some to plant in my garden. :yoinks:

I wouldn't have a problem with it at all
Id smoke shit if it would get me high....lol NO NOT REALLY just joking, it wouldn't have to get me high at all...hehehe

i am skeptical too until i see the trans-genic plant in a science journal......but whose to say you are not smoking bud that has had a mutagen like colchicine applied to it....or genetically modified?......-gp

Believe me, you would prolly know within a matter of a few minutes if you smoked a bud that had colchicine applied to it. That stuff is like slow cyanide.

I think we could see GM herb within the next ten years. Imagine your favorite plant but with double the THC, no other characteristics changed through breeding. It would be awesome. As soon as they completely map the relevant genes to all cannabinoid synthesis then it will be entirely possible.

As a scientist, all the fuss about GM amazes me. It is the future of our food plants and possibly even herb.

The first thing the scientists did was give themselves a huge set of boobs. You can find most of them hanging out at home, at least the ones that arent stripping downtown.

It would be interesting to do some quantative PCR on flower samples from elite clones to look at genes (involved in the biosythesis of THC and related compounds). May find a certain genes expressing more or less or not at all in elite clones. THerefore, it is pausible to think that these elites are plants with possible natural mutations resulting increased/decreased biosynthetic pathway enzyme activity or more substrate is made available for the THC biosythn pathway. These plants had favorable mutations and were "selected" for their yummy potent traits. So who wants to "donate" some flower samples for science. ;)
NoS

P.S. To complete my though with the thread. So finding a natural mutant or producing one in the lab would be smoked the same in my bong.

I would have to know more about how and for what purpose it was genetically modified, but I would be open to one bowl even if I didn't approve, just because you gotta give everything a shot at least once
i would be worried about the additives though

Many strains are genetically modified from their predecessors.

No Problem with GMO's.

BIG PROBLEM with Monsanto style GMO's.

Also the American biotech industry has a proven track record of NOT reporting adverse events (when their products cripple someone etc.)

You can trust nature to send an occasional gamma ray that creates ionizing radiation that zaps plant DNA that yields interesting Cannabis.

Can't trust Bayer/Monsanto to wield such powers ethically, however.

i'd try tobacco with THC in it. esp if the flavor came along for the ride. it would make the half-dozen or so cigars that i smoke in the course of a year MUCH more interesting... i want some crazed researcher to splice the THC producing genes into kudzu & release it into the wild. can't you just see the DEA trying to eradicate it? LOL!

We already have a perfectly good plant that makes thc and all of it’s companion terpenes/cannabinoids without any splicing...

Nice example of scientists with fuck all better to do
