would a 440 cfm vortex be too loud?

its gotta go in a shed out on my aprt porch. The shed is good size, and is locked with two locks, one is a bolt. My cabinet will be inside the shed. It will be hooked up with a 400 w hps aircooled :joint:. would a 440 cfm vortex make too much noise for outside people to hear?

I have a 747vortex running full blast and it makes the same sound as the heat furnace in my house...they kinda equal each other out...so my answer to you would be yes...I also have a 449 6" vortex thats even quieter....

best thing is go overboard on the vortex and get a speed controller to get just the right amount of sound outta of it...

how much are speed controls and will it control the loudness so people can not hear it outside?

Typically about $30.
That fan is much more than sufficient, so a speed controller would definitely help to keep the noise down since you won't need to run it at 100%.

If that air-cooled light is hooked up to your fan, how is the rest of the shed being ventilated?

hey also its an outside shed, so it gets cold in there, i only wanted to grow in winter, not summer too hot for shed!! do i even need fan, I think it will be cool enough in there and for heating I am using a heater outside the cabinet. the light is a 400 w hps aircooled, remote ballast (outside of cabinet) :chin:

i have a vortex 6inch and the sound of all the air pushing out is super loud.....mind u i still need to buy a speed control. and i might get some kind of muffler...its really a loud ass fan....alot of perople say its super quiet..but its not.
u need to get a buch of things to assist in reducing sound...but your outside so it shouldnt be that bad for u at all...get some insulated ducting and a speed controller//and if u use a carbon scrubbedr that will quiet it down also...gl (still a great fan,,,top of the line performance..)

well I am moving into my place in a couple of weeks. I will just get the light, since it is outside. it may be cold enough without a fan, will need a heater though.

The Vortex can be put into a plywood box and covered with soundboard or rigid insulation for sound damping. Use liquid nails or equivalent to glue insulation on outside and make sure to leave access to get back into the box if you need to. I use weatherstripping to seal the access side.

Here is the color coding for the speed control.

When you actually go to do it, this will make sense.

Speed control I used was an Elicent speed control three wire 3 amp.

You could also find a motor controller at you local electical supply which would probably be a two wire, which will work.

Power to fan: Black to black speed control connection is inside fan J-box
White to blue
Green to green/yellow

Speed Control Connection at fan J-box:

black connects to black with wire nut as described above
grey to black wire going into fan motor(connect at plastic terminal)
Look at wires going from plastic wiring terminal and find black wire which goes in to the fan motor. Connect grey on other side of terminal.
red- not used; put wire nut on it.

Good luck

I highly recommend an inline duct muffler. From what I could gather after examining my SunCourt 6" inline duct muffler, they're amazingly simple to build. They can also be purchased for relatively cheap.

You should be able to. I've also recently heard that they're available at hardware stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's.
