just noticed little flies all around the bottom of my plants. they dont look like mosquitoes, more like fruit flies. also worms in my soil. they dont have a color, they're transparent. plants are around 3-4 weeks from harvesting. anyone know what these are and how to get rid of them?

Sounds like fungas gnats and fungus gnat larvae.I've never had them only spidermites and I don't know if no pest strips would be effective against them.Do a search for fungus gnats and you should get plenty of remedies.

Fungus gnats for sure.

Beneficial nematodes are the best and safest solution.

I am fighting them myself right now. Nems are on the way via courier.

Neem oil and gnatrol are the tried and true methods. Gnatrol is in the mosquito dunks thery sell at Home Depot. Use them at 1/4 - 1/2 strength in your water to kill the larva. Also gnats like it moist so let your plants go a little dry till you get them under control. The yellow sticky strips will help kill any adults.

I got gnats on my current run and was able to get it under control with a quick shot of Neem Oil and putting about 1/4" of perlite on top of the soil in all my pots. Helps to keep the young adults from leaving the soil to get their love on. If you do not break some part of their life cycle you will have swarms in very little time and your plants will suffer.

damm i ran around all day yesterday, from hydro stores to home depots and all i could find was yellow sticky strips and insectigone powder. its active ingredient is diatomaceous earth, will that kill the larvae? i also watered them with 3% peroxide (4water-1peroxide ratio). Are mosquito dunks available in canada? i couldnt find them anywhere. nematodes are only available on order, about 2 weeks delay, i'm harevsting in about 3 or 4 weeks. is that enough time for these buggers to really affect my buds at this point?

no pest strips wil kill everyone of the lil buggers. some here don't care for them though because of the active ingredients.
i leave them hanging in my rooms full time in the summer when outside to inside infestations can more easily happen.
peroxide kills everything in the soil usually, including beneficials. not that good of a thing. roots need beneficials to process nutrients.
i'd think twice about using a hydro shop that does'nt carry gnatrol,,,,figgerin gnats are probably the most common bug you'll see.

Things I've done:
1. let the soil dry out and then water from the bottom lightly to keep the top part fairly dry
2. Spray down the soil surface with pyrethrin
3. Hang the sticky strip
4. No pest strip

By far the most effective treatment was the no pest strip - you don't have to leave it in all the time, but can treat the space for a few days and then take it and put it in a plastic bag. If they reappear (and they probably will) just put it in the room again. If the strips don't bother you, just leave them there all the time. I leave one in my veg space at all times, but don't use them in the flowering space - this regimine has worked well for me for quite some time.

DE is safe for humans. It is the skeletons of sea creatures called diatoms, and the tiny shell dust dries out and kills insects that get it on them. It may work against the larvae or adults as they encounter it. Worth a shot.

This is the same as mosquito dunks:

Soak a few tablespoons of the granules per 2L water over night, then water all your plants with this solution. You can strain out the granules if you want. Repeat in 7 days.

Great place for all pest fighting tools organically! That's where I get the nems from.

"SM-90 will inhibit beneficial bacterial colonization. If you are trying to promote bacteria growth in your garden, this may not be a desirable additive."

Not good....

ok after doing some research, gnatrol is really hard to get in canada, like headypete pointed out aquabac is pretty much the same thing and availabe at reno-depots. i'm going to go get some of that and see what happens.

i keep hearing how good no pest strips are but like i said, i'm 5 weeks into flowering, i think its too late for that. thanks for all the help.

bacterial colonization is why the gnats are there......

beneficial or not the gnats will do more harm then good with only 3 weeks left its worth offing the fungi/bacterial to save the plants...

I can probably explain that
I did exterminations of all kinds for years, still hold some tickets. All products that have active pest control products, must be accepted and regulated to Canadian standards. They all must be registered with the PCP act after testing and a reason for it's use accepted. There are lots of products that are not allowed in Canada for one reason or another, the main one is that there is already something similar registered for use
