Working on an idea

Been working on a concept for a while that will allow me to properly build the system of my dreams....Thus far it consits of 800 watts ( 2x 400) per 24 plants....Seems like to many plants for the space right??? Well actualy you only have 6 plants per 12 sq ft....I will explain in detail how this is possible.....Vertical growing, maximize space, maximize light penetration and efficiency.
the idea is simply this:
- A square with two levels of shelves.
- the shelves are twenty four inches apart top and bottom 40" in length.
-18" caster platform ( first shelf.....second shelf will be built above, it will be braced to the bottom platform with legs in each corner.
-Each shelf holds 3 plants (12 per shelf) 2gallon buckets.
- 48 " cool tube located in the center exactly 20" from all sides.
- 2 400 watt bulbs are installed one at 48 " one at 24" ( light allows for 3 feet maximum height) 1.5 feet in both directions up and down
- A thin mesh chicken wire tube is created to wrap around the inside perimeter of the square..This keeps plants away from the light and also allows complete control of plants from outside the unit ( unlike most vertical growing systems.) The wire can also help to securely fasten heavy buds from falling over.
- the light tube is cooled of course...

the concept above allows. 2 400 watt bulbs to adequately supply light to 24 plants. In essence it is 800 watts per 6 plants ( 4 sides) It allows plants to rest no more than 18" from the light source. It also allows the canopy to circle the mesh and keep all the light inside the canopy as opposed to letting it get out...

A friend has a similar system he built based on the octagon, because of light penetration and light being blasted from top to bottom of the plant he yields over 1 gram per watt( commercial strains).60-.85 grams for connoseiuer strains......1 circle of 24 yileded him almost 3 lbs last time with a strain called SDPK ( sour diesel /purple kush) 3lbs off 1200 watts....(He added a 400 watt bulb inside a 60" tube).....the only difference in my system to his is that my pots will remain mobile and I will have the cage to protect the plants....If he wasnt careful heavy buds would fall into the light tube and burn..........He certainly has been a mentor to me in many ways, I learned alot from the guy...

What do you guys think about this way to maximize the heck out of a 400 watter?????

no thoughts??? Tell me how stupid the idea is at least....

What flaws do you see in the system????

I also thought about building a 14" platform underneath. I would vent two sides of the platform to allow nice cool air to enter below. I could then attach my blower to the plywood structure and blow cool air up and out of the tube. Insulating the under side of the platform could proove to dampen fan noise as well. I also thought of mounting two small fans to blow cool air from down below up into the canopy. In terms of power source and wires, ideally I could rig all my outlets and power to the outside of the platform easily accessible to monitor timers etc....

I am really digging this idea thus far as all the maintenance you cant do with closed vertical systems you can do with this. Essentially there is no reason except for before of after to ever enter the center( change bulbs, clean reflectors etc... Pots can be rotated as they are not locked in like the other vertical systems so all sides of the plant can be in contact with light.( 1/4 turn from time to time)...And now all the blowers and crap can be stashed underneath and fully function......I am pretty stoked.......

I also did some math... basically each side is 12 sq ft holding 6 plants...This also is based off the fact that finishe flower heights would be around 24". The system could be modified easily for those who like to grow big plants...Considering that 800 watts are used in this vertical setup we wind up with this equation....
12 sqft/800 watts = 66 watts per sq ft.... Plenty of light to do some damage...

Even if I pulled 1z a plant thats 1.8lbs with 800 watts.... And all the fans, blowers and lights can run off one 15 amp switch.......WTF ????

Feed back??????

HEres a rough sketch of the idea and some number doodles....the idea on the left is a modified version of a stadium setup....It fits snuggly into a 49X49 area.....the idea on the right is what I have been trying to explain above.....

Whatcha think?????

Have you heard of the coliseum system? It's kinda like your idea but with a nice twist, the grow system is cylindrical and the plants are @ +-45º angle, and the lights go in the center in cool tubes also.

Coliseum Grow System

Anyway, i would go for 200W CFL's in the center and put the HPS on top.

Just an idea to join that brainstorming of yours.

Peace

I have seen them the only hassle is again the plants are locked in. 2 it costs a bit and only works with a few strains well. 3 no way youre gettin the light 18 " from the canopy....

I have seen the cage, coliseum, octagon etc...they are great no doubt but I am looking to still interact with the plants move pots, prune, tie up,or down etc.... I certainly dont want a light against my back while working either.... This system seems like it allows me to move around the outside and handle plant buisness easily.....

Well I havent built the design I was dreaming of. I did build this unit for a friend and it seems to be working nicely. The drawing is on the left of the drawings I posted above...I basically made a 5x4 rectangle fit into a 4x4 square by raising the outside shelves 12" second shelf at 6 middle row a ground zero...20 plants 1 per sq ft...

These pice are taken at day 22 or so...The first pics may have been taken a day before??? The second two are the same day...
