Working in Netherlands

G

Guest

Anyone have any idea how easy it is for an American to get a job in the Netherlands.

I have the opportunity to stay with someone there for a month to 6 months. I was wondering if it would be easy to get a cash paying job there... without doing paperwork. And possibly also at a coffeeshop.

I'll be living outside of Amsterdam... in Holland...

Any ideas?

Thx :rasta:

I'm IN the states myself.. and would LOVE to work in Holland..

If nothing else.. get urself a place and beem some herbs... there are LOTS of coffeshops u could approach with ur herbs...

Ur VERY LUCKY to have someone u can stay with while u get on ur feet....

Need a self sufficient roommate??? LOL!! been wanting to ESCAPE the U.S. for a while now..
Depending on how Nov 2008 goes... IT MAY BE IMPERATIVE!!

Peace

the dutch are reluctant to give non-europeans work permits etc ,but its not impossible ,a coffeshop job wouldn't be paperless ,,maybe working in the construction industry or greenhouse industry would be easier,,your friend who u plan staying with should know someone in these industries that can probably offer u cash in hand work ,
good luck with your venture

Hey Hazy I have a question about this whole working over there thing. I am getting my irish passport here in the next 6 weeks. So now that I am an irish citzen does that mean that I am also part of the EU? So I don't need to have work vista's then correct? Basically I am a European on paper now.
Thanks for you time guys.

I believe you are right about them being Slave drivers! I won't be looking for work when i head over, besides I don't think I would need work permit as I am a tattooist. Just going to head over for a couple months and run a muck. Hell I haven't seen the inside of a European drunk tank yet and I hear that they have fur lined toilets! I know that the medical clubs out here in Cali the workers aren't paid that well and the people who run them keep their eyes on their cash for sure. As you can tell I am pretty excited about getting this passport. Its taken 2 years for them to process my paperwork to become an Irish citzen and now I am starting to think about what I can do with it.
Ah to dream......

Unless you're in one of the fields of "highly educated workers" that the Netherlands is in need of or you have some unique skill that Dutch or EU citizens can't perform, your only chance of working in the netherlands is if you are self-employed and request a work permit under the Dutch/American friendship treaty. It's a loophole that allows Americans to start their own business. You can only work for yourself for the first 3 years, you have to have at least 3 clients and you have to be profitable or your permit won't be renewed. If you can last that long then you try to find a job, but it's not easy. If you are over 45 you are out of luck.

You can work black cleaning houses but if you work off the books at a company and get caught the company has to pay a 8000 euro fine and you get deported. Not many companies are going to be interested in hiring someone black especially when there are so many other out of work job seekers. Coffeeshops are getting controlled so I doubt you'd have much of a chance finding a job in a coffeeshop.

Unless you are EU you can't get a SOFI number unless you have a residence permit and you can't get a residence permit unless you have a SOFI number. You need health insurance to get a residence permit but to get the insurance, you need a SOFI number and a bank account which you can't get without a SOFI number and a residence permit. Simple huh?

Im from canada, but my girlfriend at the moment is an EU Citizen, we have been dating for sometime and i most likely will end up marrying her... would this then mean that i would also have the opportunity to become a European citizen based on the fact i was married to one?

9 times out of 10 that would be the case and i suspect your in spain so application should be ok ,
however other countries in europe arent so welcoming ,,afom is having lots of trouble getting his wife citizenship although he is european and they have a child together that was born in the european union ,the officals are actually saying that they married just for citizenship and that his wife will be deported/refused citizen unless my friend proves otherwise,he's not very happy ,,,

good luck

no need to speak dutch ,,most dutch speak fluent english,,

labouring on the building or greenhouse work should be easy to find ,,computer jobs you'll need proper qualifications unless u really good at the job and can talk the talk ,,bar /restaraunt jobs might be an option ,

do you mean i have to have a job in this country and enough money saved up and have to prove it with payslips kinda thing? are those agencies you speak of here or there do you mean? i can just walk in a look for work?
is it difficult or expensive to find a place to live there? would it be best to have a few grand saved before i think of moving there? i just want to work there first to see if i like it, it won't be a forever type of thing, especially if they work you more than here unless the wages are better that is.
