oh the socialists, i'm pretty much a socialist, though not really because of the standard reasons, i just think certain industries are too important to society to be trusted to private enterprise, of course the current government agrees but always descibes these as the industries related to the military, but i think communications and energy are for more imprtant, and on a side note, i can't believe that if all you want to do is set up and maintain linux boxes your having trouble making serious bank doing that.

It's one of those things that I enjoy doing for myself/friends/family, but if I was told what to do/how to do it for someone else, I would grow to hate it.

I am currently sending out resumes to begin work as a programmer or systems analyst (I enjoy that too and it makes more bread), so we'll see how that goes.

I also am a socialist in the sense that I believe "the people" should be in control of a country's major resources like steel, oil, natural gas, food production, etc. And by "the people", I mean individuals working as a whole, not corporations.

In 2001, 1% of Americans held 33.4% of the wealth in America. The next 19% held 51% and the bottom 80% of Americans had to divvy up ~15.5% of what was left. I also think there should be a much better distribution of wealth amongst all classes of people.

In our society, we tend to see poor people as deserving of their situation in life. We tend to look up to the rich and feel that they got to be rich because they possess qualities that poor people don't. We idolize the rich in our hypercapitalistic society and we work ourselves to death either trying to just have enough food to survive or trying to amass as much material possession as possible.

So yeah, I'm all for socialism as an economic system. A lot of people say socialism looks great on paper but doesn't work in the real world. I say take a look at the statistics I threw down and you tell me that capitalism is working. (And it is, if you're Ronald Reagan and believe in trickle down economics)

In a free market system there will always be the haves and the have nots,in a socialist system most all become have nots.In a free market system people work according to their abilities and motivations. In Socialist systems I see a whole lot of whining for longer vacations and less work hours.Redistribution of wealth is not only criminal in the eyes of those willing to take their chances and make their own way,it's a great way to get rid of the most talented productive members of a society.

If there's a complete redistribution of wealth, why would everyone become the have-nots? (This is considering lack of government corruption). At best everyone will have what everyone else will have. The only people that would suck for are those that crave more than they need. But I'm thinking of the most good for the most people in a society. Not the most good for the chosen few and scraps for the rest. And this is in terms of money, schooling, medical care, pensions, vacation time, work time, material goods, etc.

In a free market system, we have the augmented distribution of wealth which I have posted. Also, you're saying that removing a free market system and redistributing wealth gets rid of the most talented productive members of a society? So are you saying that they're only being productive to earn a buck? And are you saying that the most talented and productive are not in the bottom 80 percentile?

In Socialist systems I see a whole lot of whining for longer vacations and less work hours.

Isn't this exactly one of the largest issues that American workers deal with? Don't most countries have less work hours and more vacation time, AND they're considered capitalist?

Redistribution of wealth is not only criminal in the eyes of those willing to take their chances and make their own way,it's a great way to get rid of the most talented productive members of a society.

The ones who are pissed off most about the redistribution of wealth are the ones who hang onto it with an iron fist. But if we live in a world with other people, other human beings, I consider the livelihood of my fellow human beings far more important than a large screen TV in my living room.

In a socialized system, more people have a chance to achieve what they wish to achieve through better education at no cost, better medical care at no cost, better living conditions at no or minimal cost, etc.

Of course, you have to consider this is a situation where there is minimal or no governmental corruption... you know, where the government is looking out for the best interest of it's people and not just those with money or those that are "connected". I know.. it's hard to imagine a government like that and a social situation like that :)

While I have never worked at a fast food place I have worked my far share of restaurants. You can make double if not triple minimum wage working at one of them. If you can't get hired as a server right off, start busing or something and work you way up. Unless you are a complete idiot you'll be serving within a year (maybe) and you should be making good money. Personally I hate working most "jobs" so I bust my ass for half the year and then I don't work at all for 4-6 months.

I agree here. My girlfriend works room service at the Hilton and makes triple what my dumb-ass gets working in a cubicle in a call center :(

Not in this situation since I don't ever see my boss.. just a 'supervisor' who last week was in my position. The only difference is a 50 cent raise. She, on the other hand, does have to deal with a lot of bullshit from management. But that's just this specific instance of two separate jobs. I personally would prefer to have her job since she has a lot of downtime and can bring a laptop to work, which is perfect for me since I am in my second to last semester of school for programming/systems analysis.

hahahahaha...clearly you're not an outdoorsman.....

What? You think the deer just jumped into their laps without thinking twice?

Even with guns it can take many days to get into a position to bag yourself a deer...
