Any hardwood that you can get will work. Used to sell quite a few whittled out of Cherry, Black Walnut a tight secound, but Cherry's kind'a hard to whittle. I'd start with Walnut or Pecan or even Ash.
I never liked smoking out of wood myself, though, allways been a Rollin' man.

Cherry. or If you can find a Briar knurl, that would be fun.

I once used a Cedar stick that I pulled out of a swamp. It cut smooth but once the bowl was roasted it smoked very well. Not a long term pipe however.

the harder the wood the better for a pipe
don't use soft woods like pine as they have too much resin in them that will vaporise when you use the pipe
and thats something you don't want to happen

nice... now I want to make one..haha :D

i know this is about wood but i had a dream that involved a 5 gallon water bottle, an extremely long central stem with a cereal bowl on top, a reversible electric vacuum pump, and about 8 hoses.

maybe i could use wooden mouth pieces... :chin:

bamboo works. jut fashioned me a piece of out a good foot long section. I am also planning on making a few pipes out of wild dagga (leonurus leonitis) wood (once fall comes and my plants come down, I will post thsoe pics at some point). I have heard that datura wood works as well. they are natural and very easy to work with and already come hollowed out for the most part...

although, can anyone reccomend a good place to purchase glass bowls for relatively cheap?

but yea what everyone else said about the wood is good, as far as my experience with it goes.

Hardwood pipes are lovely.
Just watch-out for hardwood laminate types, You can never be sure of the adhesives used to assemble the different hardwoods.

I've had a cpl. pretty neat wooden pipes in the past. I never liked to smoke out of them tho.
...seemed more like "novelty" to me sittin' next to the nice clean glass.

my favorite Non-glass piece was an "antler pipe" I used to have ...even stood up on its own and hit really smooth.

Also, some of you may have seen pipes made of Ivory (which can hit almost like a nice glass piece). A friend of mine collects ivory pipes carved by Alaskan Inuit (eskimos).

most are FAR more inticate than this in detail, but this is a nice example of a simple piece:

that antler pipe is extremely nice yukon and i can only imagine how an ivory pipe hits..my pipe will be nowhere near as in depth as those though just something nice and natural to smoke out of....anyone feel free to post pics of any pipes of the sort you have :joint:

about 6' of bamboo was like 7$ at craft store. bowl was from crappy old acryllic bong which had acetone poured into it (whoops, thats not isopropyl alcohol...). going to get some glass bowls from local headshop soon. the metal is alright though. takes nice hits. it had to be drilled at that node and then i drilled a hole where the bowl goes, jammed the rubber seal in there and shoved the bowl in. very simply, very nice. going to paint a few maybe.

this is the dagga wood i will be using. i expect it will get a bit bigger.

edit, just watched the vid of the guy using bamboo making the steam roller and one thing he didn't do was remove the crap in the bamboo at every node of growth. i cant recall the anatomical name of that disk thing in there but tis there and I just drilled though it with a long enough bit, dont know how he did it (unless it was removed while the piece was fresh or something...) but if you don't put a hole through it some way you wont pull anything through

i personally like having pipes made from more exotic woods, like cocobolo which is extremely hard with a rich reddish brown color, amaranth which is naturally purple in color, zebra wood which is light tan with dark brown striping, and ebony which is black. all of these make great pipes, but are a little harder than most woods.
