Wiring 3 or 4 cleat sockets for CFL's??

So a friend is making a cab, and wants my help, I want to use these type of cleats in lue of the plug-in kind I used on my last cab. These seem way studier/safe.

can 3 or 4 of them be wired in series or does it have to be parallel??
friend will be running about 50 watts of CFL out of each one... (2 w/a Y adapter, 23-26W bulbs)

was going to use a cheap household extension cord and just cut it, maybe 2 of them, 1 to connect all the cleats together, then the one to plug into the timer.

Is that safe to do? relatively speaking?

Yep, your plan is sound *

* Assuming you take all necessary precautions with electricity, wire nuts, electrical tape, etc

i really dont know why anyone would want to put a light cleat in their grow when these (sorry for the bad pic) are so easily available ...

the light cleat has exposed terminals and are for use only up in rafters and such out-of-the-way installations. if you are at all concerned with safety, i would stay away from the light cleats.

Green, those are the things I was going to get, but light cleat is the easiest example of what I was talking about, those are just covered/sealed light cleats it looks like?

How much did they cost? And what are they called?

sorry, i can't remember what they are called, but they are often used in bedroom/hallway ceilings and you will easily find them in the electrical aisle at Home DePot. they come in ceramic or plastic and you can get them with or without the pull-chain.

Light bulb socket normally. If the numbers of lights is 4 (such as 4, 8, 14) there is another way to wire it up that is called series-parallel. The reason why i say numbers of 4, if your using the same bulbs in the same fixtures, or at least the same resistance of bulbs in the fixtures, when you wire it up this way, the resistance calculation would be equal to one bulb. If you need an example of this type in series-parallel audio systems in google, Its the same concept and wiring is almost the same.

I actually like the "exposed terminal" cleats KingofNY is asking about more than the plastic Leviton fixtures. The problem with the these is that their bases are large (limiting your installation options a bit), and you're forced to wire them up through a hole drilled behind it.

The cleat sockets made by Cooper (go to acehardwareoutlet, com and search for "cooper cleat") have a much smaller footprint, are easier to wire, and if you're concerned about safety you can always hit those exposed terminals with some epoxy or even cover them with electrical tape after you're done wiring.

Those are called "keyless" light fixtures and you can get them in plastic or porcelan and with or without a pull chain
