I got a laptop with a Sprint aircard. Everytime I check my IP Address it is different. How safe are these aircards, and can I really believe that or can this aircard be tracked right to me as I type on my sofa???

Thanks....

Ok I understand. That's the one I use, and the address is like the next state over. So in worse case scenario, they will still track you on these things if you dont use proxies, etc.

wireless is so insecure, unless you are a security pro, you leave yourself open to hacking...and when hacked, your computer is wide open.

just depends on if you have a password protected wireless connection, so other wireless 'sharks' cant cruise on your web or potentially hack you.

If you use IE you set the proxy server at:
Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Proxy Server

Click OK to save it, close IE, restart IE. All of your traffic will go through the proxy server you designated.

I have a friend who can get into your wireless connection no problemo. Anything short of military grade encryption is not a problem for some people.

I use the good old wire. Pretty hard to get into my wired connection.

The most secure way to protect your wireless connection is MAC address filtering. Your mac address is a set of hexadecimal characters that is unique to your network card. From your router, you can specify what computers you want to allow on your wireless network. You don't have to put in any passwords, so nobody is able to crack it.

Most routers have a graphic interface. Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser and see if it brings up a page for your router. Check your manual or google instructions specific to your router. You'll need the user and password too. Under the tab labeled Wireless, you should find a section for MAC filtering, it may be under wireless security or something. It's all dependent on what model of router you have.

Also, for more security options, check out dd-wrt. It's a modified firmware for many different brands of routers. I have it on my Linksys WRT54g and it works great.
