Well, describe more in detail what you are trying to do.

sounds like he's trying to get a booming car sound system outside of the car so to speak. puerto ricans around my way do this shit all the time!

try crutchfield.com. i think they have some good car stereo installation tutorials. that might help you get started as they should be applicable. just keep your positive to positive and your negative to negative, black to black, red to red and don't fry your balls off, you might hermie! lol

dude i love crutch field they are soo oooo awsome ive been googling the shit outa this idea i plan on using a 4000 watt amp heres the link http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LEGACY-4000...yZ39732QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD10VQQcmdZViewItem

this has close ups of the power terminals now it says +12v now would i be able to use a 12v dc adapter
OK, a 12 volt, 4000 watt amp is going to draw ~335 amps. To say a 12volt adaptor is going to cut it is well, wrong. You'll need to purchase an ac/dc converter big enough to handle that kind of load, and that will run you several thousand dollars. You could also use a battery from a car with a trickle charger on it, but I do not recomend this at all, as it's a great way to start a fire.

Using a headunit with a 12volt converter you would need at most, 10 amps, and you could probably get away with 5 amps if you are not going to use the internal amp of the headunit.

Save yourself the headache, and get yourself a 120 volt house amplifier. Maybe 250 watts per channel. That should be enough for you to lose your hearing, which is what it sounds like your trying to do.

And you don't need 4000 watts. Hell, I've run concerts with less than 4000 watts, and it was more than enough for 200+ people.

what about with that capaciter wouldnt that work?
Not at all. Capcaitors store energy for instantaneous use, and replace it almost as quickly. And anyone who knows car audio well will tell you that a capacitor is just a bandaid to a poor electrical system.

A capacitor is used to make up shortages in power draw when the battery cannot povide the amperage needed the moment it is needed. You would still need a power supply capable of providing 335 amps.

No. A capacitor would not have saved your alternator. You had/have a poor charging system in your car. That's what caused your alternator to fail. The person who told you that a cap would have saved it is trying to sell you a capacitor. ;)

I've been running 2500 watts in my car with a 90 amp alternator (It's stock, btw) for 4 years. I upgraded all the wiring from the batt/alt/starter with high quality 2 ga. wire, and added several good grounds through out the car. I do not have a cap, because a cap is a bandaid for a poor charging system.

I've been doing 12 volt for 15 years, and was taught by the three guys who wrote the Master Installer's test for MECP certification. They run Mobile Dynamics out of Toronto.

it was my old car, a 98 grand am, low miles, 65k when i got her, what could cause a failure like that......i mean i was driving one day, and she started to sputter, gas pedal was really heavy with hardly any acceleration, dash lights were flickering and then she died in a parking lot....any ideas got bud? the reason i thought a capacitor would help is by reducing the initial draw from the alternator and battery therefore almost nullifying any strain on the electrical....is this wrong??

My initial reaction would be, "it's a late 90's GM. Of course it died on you. The amount of mexican made parts in that car would cause your head to assplode."

I know it sounds like a cop out, but sometimes alternators just die. Too much moisture got into the windings and caused a premature failure, the rectifier could have died, could have been anything,

But I can tell you beyond a shodow of a doubt, that having a cap would not have saved it.

You might have been able to extend the life of it by cleaning up the factory grounds, replacing the power cables that run between alt/batt/starter, but it's no garauntee it would not have happened eventually.

Yes, like other people have said, you do not need a 4000 watt amp for anything car related...

Lots of the amps on ebay that are 1000, 2000, 4000 "watts" are not really RMS (continuous) watts, thats max watts they are listing...250 watts RMS will be more than enough, like someone else said.

to the person that said the alternator/capacitor thing, A fuse might of saved it, but it sounds like it was on it's way out anyways.
