windows why?

why do you want to upgrade? out of other things to do?

my mother upgraded to windows 10, the start menu now offers a convenient link to new movies. from what i see, it appears that it's a "socially integrated OS" where people who want to live the life they're told to can do so conveniently.

as a software developer and basically human being, i prefer an OS that does shit when i tell it to, and nowt else.

forward march into oblivion/profits for them.

why does anyone need a new OS? to make useful apps from yesterday even more inaccessible?

computers are things for computing on, in my opinion, not getting rid of every few years to "keep up" with consumerism and having really shite karma.

a friend of mine who thinks that he's a computer whiz swore up n down that 10 was gonna be the best thing since sliced bread, however, the tech support crew @ my internet provider said it was gonna be shit. my buddy Hank told me that the tech support didn't know shit.

silly boy, he went over to 10 as soon as he could and then dumped that OS and reloaded his #8.......

Well, it's all in how you go about it.

I had to carefully answer the questions presented upon installation/upgrade. If I had said yes to all I would be hating Windows...

But I took the time to make sure all their spywares, sharewares, reporting services, etc were turned off or blocked. I also chose not to use their mail or browser, instead installing Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird, which work well. Chrome browser works well with Windows 10 on the NextBook tablet... Firefox works better on the Acer Laptop which was upgraded from 7 to 10... and works better than ever, boots faster and is much more fun to use now.

So check it out, but be smart... don't follow their path or you'll be sad.

Also I prefer the way 10 boots right into a windows desktop type environment rather than the silly tiles in windows 8 which were truly childish.

Happy I am to have upgraded, and it was free.

Stick that in your Apple. LOL!

I'm waiting.

I have on a Acer laptop with win 7 dual booted with a Linux Mint right now. You choose which OS to run at startup. If you don't choose, Mint just runs. Super easy to install, like the user just sits there after they download Mint and burn it to a disk then run it. Then Mint does all the loading crap itself. Easy peazy.

I also have Ubuntu on a crappy old HP laptop. I like Mint right now though. Easier to use, and looks and acts more like the windows we all learned on.

MS company sucks though. And they are in cahoots with the US gov't too. That alone means they're fucked.

And Linux is virus free too. Office comes on it free too. Firefox also comes with it. And it doesn't even come with a virus checker on it. Viruses can't run on it. That's enough for me.

Still. I might get 10 sometime for shits and grins. But no hurry at all to get pissed on by MS again. :tiphat:

Do you game?

If not try Linux Mint. It's easier to install than Windows, and can dual boot with Windows if you want to keep Windows installed.

Lessens your virus risk as it's not designed for Windows exe and security exploits. Although you can exploit it if you're good enough.

nicely put, waveguide!

for me, win 7 is going to be my last microsoft OS (apple is no option either).
i hate the increasing dependence and integration with the net, so it can spy merrily away. i also hate the trend that newer OS's seem to be targeted towards users who can't read, what with all the stupid icons and tiles.

from techdirt:

Microsoft also doesn't really address concerns about Windows 10 just being annoyingly chatty, sending numerous reports back to the Redmond mothership even when the operating system is configured to be as quiet and private as possible. The core problem with Windows 10 remains that opt-out settings remain muddy and in some cases ineffective, and it's not really clear how a lot of the OS-collected data is being used.

first things first. if u have a computer. phone. or tablet THEY ARE WATCHING lol. doesn't matter what OS.. because Microsoft has gone back to all of them to allow them all to be spied on as much as possible.

same with Linux. and every other OS out there.. the government has the top of the line tech guys working on ways to spy on you DAILY.. I wouldn't worry about it unless your a huge illegal grower..

and windows 10 is alright. I use it. but I game and shit.... I also don't use my gaming computer for anything but gaming.. my downloading/icmag/other shit is on my laptop..

It's soon to be like the Borg ... resistance is futile ... you will be assimilated!

Windows 10 is going to be the last of the traditional Windows OS's from MS, or so they say.
The push to get everyone on Windows 10 is because, soon (sooner than you think) it's all to be cloud based, ie SaaS.

Check out what MS is doing with Azure, it's IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service).

So, with Azure it's basically your server(s) are now in the cloud. It's very attractive to business which spend tens of thousands of dollars buying or building the bare metal machines to house the tens of thousands of dollars worth of software it needs to run it's daily operations. By spreading out all that money now by way of monthly subscription fees, the end user no longer has to worry about maintenance, hard and soft ware upgrades, disaster recovery, etc. because MS (or whom ever's cloud you're using) has to worry about that for you. There are many cloud services providers and new ones opening up every minute, that means bye bye IT departments, PC repair shops even desktop PC's ... and hello a nation of thin clients, mobile devices and the Internet of Things.

Payaso touched on great points. As long as you're smart about the set up process Windows 10 isn't as bad as they say. It's way faster than Vista ever was. It's way easier to use than Windows 8. And, it's cooler to look at than XP.

EastCoast710 touched on a good point too "...because Microsoft has gone back to all of them to allow them all to be spied on as much as possible. " this is true. MS has released updates that allow windows 7 and 8.1 to have the same spying and keylogging abilities as Windows 10.

I still use Windows 7 Pro. because I need the functionality and compatibility for my line of work. But, compared to Linux, Windows 10 is way more functional and compatible with most anything in today's digital environment.

I'm sorry if I offended any Linux users. I use Linux too but, I know for a fact it's not as gravy as some people try to make it out to be. I mean a lot of general functionality ( webinars, remote management, Adobe VideoScribe etc...) is missing due to the proprietary nature of Windows only code that ... can possibly, maybe, might work sometimes in Wine but, is probably cumbersome, clumsy and buggy at best. Don't get me wrong, Linux is a great OS. And I believe it can be really great if properly supported. Like, Linux is great for VoIP boxes (CentOS and FreePBX), NAS boxes (FreeNAS), Server applications (Red Hat etc...) even OS's (OSx and Android) but, unless you're a Linux administrator or a really enthusiastic hobbyist who likes spending hours in Google trying to learn how to compile a simple card reader or NIC driver or learning how to use the complicated syntax of the command line Terminal to install basic, simple stuff like updates or video players, or if you just plain prefer using "some-other-name Off-Brand-software" that you must search for in the repositories and good luck if you find it and know how to use it. The learning curve is ridiculous so, I just leave the Linux to the pros.

I made a misstatement I'd like to correct. I said viruses can't run on Linux. That is not true. It's just that, "The core reason you don’t need an antivirus on Linux is that very little Linux malware exists in the wild."

Spying is a different ballgame. Of course THEY can. Anything connected to the INTERNET can be spied on, HILLARY. That is why the defense dept. and state dept. in particular use the SIPERNET. It is not the INTERNET. I suppose a former First Lady and Secretary of State might not know about that though, DOH ;-/

I will personally never understand why all millenials, including my kids, don't question authority like my generation. God knows there has been plenty of reason to. Lots. Why accept these privacy invasions? Accepting it is approval. It's not I'm worried about it, I just will never accept or condone that as part of living in "free" society.

Like Hempcat said, this is all well and good of MS until something as simple as a hard drive crash happens, which is pretty common, and has happened to me once. And a few other people I know too.

Or the hard drive just freezes and tells you to reload it again, but you have no operating system to reload. What do you do? Is there anyway around that MS guys?

I know, just send MS a check for $350 and they'll send you a brand spanking new copy you can use, once. I'm so paranoid with that shit I wouldn't put it passed those MS MFs to have a hid a line of code in 10 software somewhere that would do just that. That was their modus operandi before. Tigers don't change their stripes.
