Wind Turbine

Snook

Still Learning
I was just redirected to an ad about wind turbines. My first and only 'search' led me to home depot, 2000w 'package' for $2,500 and there are 400w 'packages' for considerably less, $500.
I will look further but this is the place for good answers, ideas, opinions and 'first hand' experiences.. so why don't we use them?
I've searched here, nada...

nothing first hand
so why don't we use them?
turbines have more requirements than solar, all you need is south facing, no?

Check your local laws first, grants, permits, restrictions and such.

i have done a little thought/research on this
if your are in a place where it's feasible, could be a great opportunity, i mean 'free' energy? what's not to like?
but wind setups can have an invasive look, local zoning might be a make or break
to put up one large enough one in my location would run afoul of local ordinances

aint bright enough for solar, not enough wind for turbines...hmm, i think i see why they dammed the rivers here, dammit...couldn't we just burn politicians in big stoves? we got too many of them, and more come along every year...

imo the cheap & easy wind turbine is the old farm/water pump model, designed to cycle w/an up n' down motion for typical water pump action. Can be rigged to a transmission which converts the up/down motion to rotary action.

idk:dunno: I always thought of making a rig like this for 2 or 3 automotive alternators, tying those alternators together & to 12V would be elementary as that's their design, charging 12V batteries.

I've seen these sumbitches spinning fast, really fast.......

when i was researching this, there was some particular alternator that seemed to be preferred
used to be quite cheap on ebay, but then wasn't so cheap
which does imply the demand meant enough people found it worth while to do
but [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]2000w at $2,500? where i am electric is just over $0.10(kwh)
to get back your money, that's about 3 years of continuous generation
practically speaking, probably closer to 10 years

edit: whoops, forget to adjust for the 2000 which halves the number
which would be 1 1/2 years continuous and 5 actual
much depends of course where you are and your local winds
