Why? No smell in flowering or harvest?!

Hello,

Looking for some help with a weird one;

This is about my 7th grow since starting and the first 5 where a great success and was really happy…

However on my last session I switched two things;

HPS to LED (436w no brand SF4000)
Canna Boost to Sumo Boost Active

I did use some new genetics on the last grow and the plants where all over the place and no smell during flowering or after harvest, just a grass smell and ended up giving most away very unhappy.

I blamed it on bad genetics and potential light leak, so on to this grow I decided to go with Barneys (great success in past) and with a strain I had grown before and loved; blue sunset sherbert.

I am 2 week into flowering after a 6 week veg and I’m starting to worry again as there is no smell yet.

Could the china LED (same
spec and parts as SF4000 but from a well known Chinese website) or new nutrition replacement cause problems with smell etc?

thanks in advance

My guess is you're just scared and scarred. I'm hoping your smells show up again. I bet you just had some bad genetics

If the HPS bulb was too close to the tops and was frying their terps you would get an experience of some really stinky plants in the grow but it would actually result in the buds being less stinky because that smell ended up in your carbon scrubber rather than staying on the buds. A cooler LED grow would smell less when growing but result in stinkier buds..

You sure you didnt just catch the corona virus?

I thought the same thing after I cured some turns out I had lost my taste too coming back slowly. Other than that normally smell is subject to genetics even NL5 has a small smell. If they didnt show any deficiencies or burning and you flushed them at the end according to the nutrient line.

edit: 2 weeks in many wont have much smell.

Like the others are telling you, relax 2 weeks into flower is too early to be expecting much in the way of smells. The first 2-3 weeks of flower is the stretch phase and it's during this phase where the plant is setting up it's structure to support the buds that will come. Once stretch is over you should start to see the formation of bunches of hairs at the bud sites and even at this point the smell isn't very strong then the buds start getting bigger and the resin (trichomes) start showing up. This is when the smells start to be noticeable and will continue to get stronger on up to harvest.

I just don't see how bad genetics and a potential light leak could make your weed bad. If you had to give your weed away because it wasn't any good then you may have a problem in the grow. What kind of soil, water, fertilizers are you using? Shoot a photo of the plant in the container that's in question😎

My dope isn't terpy enough either. Maybe the temp is too high, evaporating the goodies. Maybe it is the different nutes. I have been hitting my plants with Carbs and some Mammoth P trying to get the frost. It's like my old farmer used to say, "it's not that easy".

One of these daze I will get a dehuey that dumps the hot air outside. And have the exterior windows in the lung open at night to let in cool air. My trics usually look shriveled up like raisens vs grapes.

Overfeeding and light intensity/distance can cause finished buds to lack smell, taste and power despite appearing decent. Soil grown plants should be farther away from the LED to develop optimally.

The spectrum of the light is not ideal, and creates nutrient issues. It's always worth the investment to buy a good light. Everything springs from it. I like Hortilux and Fluence.

Fletch is right. When you use nitrogen base nutrients during veg. the ammonium nitrogen will not show on the EC meter because it's not salt. The nitrogen can build up in the root zone and you do not know it's there and can inhibit resin production later in the flowering. That's why it is best to use the very minimum amounts of nitrogen during the veg stage. I've seen some pretty plants go south because of nitrogen exposure during flowering. Plants don't need a lot of fertilizer as much as they need just a complete fertilizer. 😎

It's been my experience that no smell equates to a lack of rhizosphere whole spectrum support as well as lulls in between watering s. In a dialed in grow plants should be smelling by the end of the 3rd week. You should be strapping on your carbon filter on by the 4th week from my limited experience. Then again, WTH do I know

You got that right and a good answer too. Thank you Bull 😎
