Why do my flowers smell funny?

I have a female from bagseed about 20 days into flowering. Everything looks good, lots of flowers, lots of crystals, etc. No signs of any plant trouble. 250 HPS in a closet, temps range from approx 68 at night to 85 daytime. I watered 2 days ago with 15-30-15 ferts, soil is still moist.

My problem is my flowers smell VERY musty - almost like old wet laundry or dirty smelly sneakers or something...

I've looked all over and I see no signs of mold anywhere. My closet is usually open all day and closed at night. I do not have an exhaust fan, just a fan for circulation. This house is brand new, the closet is clean, and no other plants have had any contact. Humidity is low during the day (23% at noon today) and goes up at night to around 40. Never higher than 50.

Any thoughts?

I've read one guy described his plants as, "They smell like cat piss in diesel". Your plants are fine. I drove by a dead skunk one time, and swore someone was growing some good shit. Roses ani't got nothing on MJ....lol

I hope you guys are right.

I know what ya'll mean about the smell - I love that skunky smell, but this isn't skunky at all. It smells like the laundry bags I brought home when I was in college.

Thanks for the help.

Different strains have different smells aswell as the strains phenotypes.

I have chopped and dried plants that smell so nasty you and no one you know would want to smell or taste them but they would get you oh so high.

Some purple hawaiins I grew 3 years back smelled so musty and acrid, almost llike ammonia but there was no mold, just the taste and smell of that particular strain I guess.

With the RH you're describing, I think you've just got a very stinky strain. Relax, you've kept the RH in check, just keep reminding yourself of that :)

I,ve noticed the exact same thing with my ak-47's.They smell like "week old camp gash"Don't worry that nasty smell will change when ya cure. You will be rewarded with very sweet, sticky and stinky (nice stink) buds :yummy:

i wouldn't worry either, some strains do smell "gross" sometimes...the smell might change later in flowering or get better during your curing process.

if not you could cross a couple and come out with your own strain " locker room " for the people that miss highschool or college lmao

peace

riddle me this

riddle me this

☺twist,

☺is it indica,
or sativa?

☺is the fouled up socks smell constant,
or does it come in waves ?

☺does the soil smell like God's green earth,
or does it have a sweet, sour, shitty, pissy, :D, musty, or pungeunt smell
the latter is the main concern you should have at this point,
and easy to fix if you have the heart/pockets for it. (enzymes, soil=₤₤₤)

☺only other worry would be in your air quality
(judging from you leavin doors open, its safe to say you have no extraction, nor intake fans in there)
at night there is no air exchange when the door is closed,
there MUST be at least passive HVAC at night, which,
in a haphazard closet grow with no ductwork, is impossible to do
without light leaks, which some strains are susceptable(sp?) to.

in conclusion,
as long as you have an oscillating fan or two going at all times,
this is especially crucial at night
as far as the growth of detrimental parasitic lower fungi
bred by way of invisible microscopic spore is concerned

millions of species of mold and mildew spores are swirling around at al times
even in the air you are breathing right now
just laying in wait for conditions to be right to germinate on the host
be it your soil (root/soil diseases-31 flavors), buds (baskin robbins 31),
leaves (downy/powdery mildew), or stem (blights/scale)

Keep air exchanges up, and humidity down, + temps down
to make for less-than-ideal conditions for these pathogens to take hold.

just because you cant see it, doesnt mean its not there.

☺cJ

tip: prevent powdery dew from forming on yer plants, overnight,
by making sure the innards of the cab/closet remain cooler than the room its in.

for indicas, and no extraction fan/freh air exchanges,
make sure to have a fan blowing over the tops at all times.
if you are unable to spend, at least make sure the fan that is in there now
has an oscillating feature so that at least some wind is hitting the colas directly,
in turn helping the plants resist the nasties

The smell is fading now - At first I could smell it from 5 feet away, now I have to almost touch my nose to the flowers to smell it. So it went from strong to weak. I think it was some nute smells coming through - I had just given her a strong feeding the day before I noticed the smell. If it happens the day after her next nute dose, I guess I'll know.

I do have a fan blowing over the tops all the time - I have another one that blows around the base during the day. I had to lay off a little because my leaves were getting windburn and sweating too much.

It's bagseed, so I'm not really sure about strain. It seems to be Indica dominant.

I've been leaving the door open some at night as well. I had to close it before because of light coming into the adjacent room, but now that room is lightproofed as well.

Hey, my grow isn't haphazard! It's well organized. I'll have some pictures soon.

I'm going to be adding in some exhaust soon - I'll probably put a bathroom-type exhaust fan on the ceiling.

Thanks for the info.
