Who uses the HTG 150wHPS?

I built a PC grow box in hopes of keeping a minimimal/stealth grow. I realized that the PC i built was just way to small to flower in. It makes for a really nice veg box though.

So while i veg a few of my friends plants, i want to build a rubbermaid setup with the smaller HTG 150watt HPS fixture. Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/150w-HPS-mini-G...42225QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

Can someone explain to me the purpose of the ducting on the top of the fixture? Am i supposed to have a fan blowing cool air into the light or sucking hot air out? What if i just mounted a 120mm fan directly on top of it (where the flange goes) and had the air getting sucked out? I plan on mounting this fixture on top of the box and cutting a hole in the top to let the light in.

Also, is that built in ballast able to run an upgraded 150w bulb? Im sure the ebay one isnt the best.

I think ill make a bubbler for the PC veg box and start a SOG in the rubbermaid when i gather more funds for it. Ima lso thinking of adding some blue and red spectrum LEDs to the grow and see if that boosts anything. Maybe not though.

Any input would be awesome from you guys. Thanks for readin!

See the screws on top? Remove the screws, pull the plate, attach a flange, connect to exhaust fan with ducting. Because the reflector is glassed in, it will get darned hot in there without a fan. I'd remote the ballast. I tried the 170 watt Agro Sun for a while, the only difference between it and an el cheapo 150 was the rate my wallet got emptied. Don't bother.

Im just not sure if the fan is supposed to be sucking out hott air or blowing cool air into the fixture.

Are you saying the HTG kits are high energy systems?

anyone use the 250w systems?

Always better to suck than to blow. But, blowing is better than nothing. I've no idea if HTGs energy consumption is higher or lower than others. While my 150 system would accommodate a 170 Sun Agro bulb, the 170 was four times the price while providing NO additional benefit to the garden.

Dont wanna start a war but IMO HTG's stuff is kinda cheapo.... I think most of the stuff they get is factory b-grade stuff, a lot of things i've seen had powder coat blemishes all of it (besides the bulbs which are fucking great!) seems to be knock-offs of what you can get elsewhere that are of better quality. Check out my cool tube from HTG, it the bulb hangs from a medal bracket whereas other cool tubes are held by the bracket. Results? A droopy bulb that does not hang evenly, air flow is restricted and that portion of the cool tube gets fucking hot...

I'd get that light though Bro, I am sure it will work great for you. It's probably going to get hotter than hell so get a fan.

Thanks for the info. I think if i go with the 150w system ill duct the fixture to get the hot air out and maybe hook up a small PC cooling fan to it somehow to make sure it stays cool. Its either going to be for a rubbermaid grow or a 2x3x4 cab.

get the htg "bat wing" 150hps off ebay and get a good fan...highly recommended (by me).

Word.

You can also get a 4" duct booster fan and make it suck the air from the light... Hella easy to do. I've seen 600 watts with batwings 6" from the canopy with this method...
