White fuzz on the lava rocks

Guest

I have what I hought was salts builup on the lava rocks. But under the magnifying glass it's white and fuzzy I fear it's a mold. Please reffer me to picts of mold and salt buildup. I understand a salt build up is often misstaken for a mold. I have a 12 bucket bb setup with 5 plants. My concern is because it's very humid right now and The RW cubes are constantly soaked.
Sorry no pict right now. Thanks

Sounds like you need to get the humidity down. Also, it is my understanding that with the BB setup the cubes dont rest in the water....rather just about them and the roots go into the water....

did you rinse your lava rocks really good before using them>?

what are youer temps and humidity?

and what are your water temps of your setup?

and have you checked your plants roots?

I didn't rinse sufficiently. There is some silt in the buckets
Reservoir temp is 75%, room temps are 80% at the moment
I don't know the humidity. Daily afternoon rain showers. With temps in the high 80's to mid 90's
All air exchange has been from inside the 75% + air conditioned house .
At day 14, all 5 plants have one or two healthy roots coming out of the net pots.
I thought I was careful to place the cubes above the water level. Last week I noticed the cubes were constantly soaked and raised the lids 1/2" They are still soaked. I will raise them up another 1/2 now.
The plants are growing fast and appear healthy at this point. Thanks

I hope this helps. I raised the lids 1 inch and covered the gap created to keep out the light. Yeasterday I added a fan that pulls air from the room and vents thru the roof. It is pulling a good amount of air from inside the house. It pulls the door open several inches.
I'm hoping the inside air is less humid than outside and it is much cooler. Also the house is pretty much window closed and AC'ed for the summer. I think this keeps CO2 levels are a little higher indoors. I will adress a humidity meter ASAP. Thanks

Just picked up a 20$ temp/humidity gauge from radio shack model 63-1032 What reviews I found were mostly positive. After 1/2 hour . room temps are at 77 with 55% rh. (relative humidity) Check this, outside right now it's 89 with 88% rh And it's about to rain like a Big Dog! Eventually I will have to pull air from outside. The 55% rh isn't bad but I just started using the exhaust fan yesterday so humidity was probably higher in the past several weeks. How to address this? I'm going over to the Florida thread and see how the Southern Boys take care of it! Thanks

Seems by raising the lids have helped. The RW cubes are no longer soaking wet and the white stuff is not so visable. still working on the humidity issues. Thanks.

A closed house will have lower CO2. Southern boys use fungicides to combat high humidity disease problems so common to our area.

Interesting, I assumed I closed house would have somewhat raised CO2 levels. I'd be very interested in fungicides and how they are applied. So far I have a spray bottle with a weak water & bleach solution I apply here and there. Thanks

just an idea.. I had the white mold on my lava rocks and I used Advanced's Pirahna (sp?) and sprayed it on the rocks and all on the root zones of my plants... and no more fuzzy white stuff! I think I sprayed twice during my last grow...
