Making a trip to Cali sometime soon and was wanting to get some IC'ers opinions on the best beach camping sites...
Anywhere from Santa Barbara up to Oregon would be acceptable...drivings not an issue as thats part of the fun!

Wanting a location close to the water yet some good hiking too...

Big Sur looks nice...
All opinions welcomed!
Your help is much appreciated.

Pismo in San Lius Obispo is cool, alot of dunes and stuff. nice if you have an atv or something. Santa cruz and Big Sur are cool places to. in Santa cruz you dont have to worry about getting caught with less than an ounce too :]

I don't know about campsites on the coast
'cause the only real camping I've done was
in Yosemite and was more years ago than I
care to reveal, but I do know that Tourist
season brings, shall we say, challenges.

If you are planning to camp at a beach site
between Santa Barbara and San Francisco
before mid-september this year I would
inquire about availability right away. I know
that popular lodgings, RV and camp sites get
all-booked up just weeks after a certain date
becomes reservation eligible--often a year
before hand. Policies will differ depending on
whether the site resides in a state or county or
municipal park or is privately owned.

Also everything will be crowded. If your looking
to socialize and meet a lot of people, than you
will really enjoy Summertime. If you are looking
for a more mellow experience...

The other thing about time of year is that along
coastal California, Summery weather often
continues through October. This provides a nice
little window of opportunity. If you are able,
consider going in late Sept. to early Oct. The high-
season crowds are gone, the weather and water
temps are usually warm (warm being a relative
term for those not familiar with the Pacific) And as
an extra bonus, all of the girls are back at their
universities--UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz and
the California State Polytechnic University at San
Luis Obisbo--and getting their last of the season
sun at pismo and Shell beaches.

Aside from all that stuff, you want to consider your
desired activities.

Do you want to see sights, ride ATVs like Irish or
include cultural experiences? Do you want to body
surf, board surf, fish, go sailing or just smoke a fatty
and contemplate the waves? Are you going with
buddies or a significant other? How long will your
trip be?

The internet is full of sites and reviews of
everything along the coast and most of Cali for
that matter. Go to a book store and peruse the
many guides that are published on the area--
this is one of my favorite things about preparing
for a trip to somewhere new.

Here's another thing: google stuff like Santa
Barbara blogs or santa cruz surfer blogs, etc.
You'll find out about lots of cool stuff you
would never otherwise know as a short-term
visitor.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't worry about getting
caught with a personal weed stash by the any
of the authorities on the central or north coast.

Let us know what you decide to do...

Happy Trails
