Crossing two "true breeding" strains (hybridizing) gives F-1 hybrids that possess the so-called "Hybrid Vigor". This means that the F-1 generation is a lot more potent than either parent. F-1 generations also consist of uniform plants.

The F1 generation is not necessarily stronger than the parent stock. The F1 hybrid is just that a hybrid of both parents and there is usually alot of variations in F1 stock, it's only after backcrossing, outcrossing, interbred, cubing, etc..to stabilize that you can hone in on one specific pheno with limited variation.

Tex your right that todays seed breeders don't do a good job producing F1 seeds. But that is due to the legal status of cannabis.

F1 are a cross of two different phenotypes of plants. F1 should {if the breeder is worth his salt} display both positive traits of the parents. IE one parent has a great buzz the other has nice short inter-nodes and produces larger buds. By going through hundreds of combinations of different parents in time you will find two phenotypes in parents that makes outstanding F1 with little to no variations.

Now if you look into commercial agriculture you will discover farmers pay thousands extra to buy F1 seeds even when they have more then enough F2 seeds from their own crops to reseed. They do this because F1 seeds will produce bigger and better plants then their "free" seeds.

So tex while your right some back crossed and inbreed plants are better the some F1 in cannabis, but this is just due to very small breeding stocks of seed growers like soma, reeferman and BOG. These guys are doing a great job with extremely limited room but due the illegality of cannabis their efforts are still not producing anything close to the quality of F1 legal seeds.

BTW back crossing is a shortcut or cheat. If a parent is showing a great trait the ideal is to find a mate that will not only bring out that trait but also add another great trait consistently. This takes thousands of plants and thousands of plants and clones of those plants to reproduce the perfect match something that just not done among todays smaller cannabis breeders.

Sorry tex your information is limited to cannabis mines not. BTW tex an F1 worth producing will always be more vigorous {or potent} then either parent! If not its the breeders fault not the plants.

Thanks for the info Rider. Your correct that my experience is primarily cannabis related and that type of variation has been my experience.

I have also found that vigor doesn't equal potency.

The cannabis (diluted) genepool can deliver 6 or 8 phenos out of one pack of beans but I have to believe that under ideal conditions F1's would be stable and vigorous. To bad we are not there yet

Ya vigor doesn't equal potency hopefully the breeder is thinking the same way we do :canabis: that potency is more important then vigor!!

I could not agree more! :friends: But i like to look at the glass as half full just think about how much more potent and easier to grow cannabis will be.
