I'm probably wrong, but when I was coming up there was never any talk about thc percentages. How did they know in the 70's that the average THC content was 3-5%?As a 56 year old man I can say the most potent erb I smoked was Columbian gold in the mid 70's.Did they even have the spectrometer needed to make such measurements?Wouldnt it be hilarious to blow a big hole in the "this isn't your fathers pot" statement.God it would be too funny that's why I know they must have had the equipment

Agreed, I'm 64 the mid/late 70's Gold and a couple Hawaiian strains were some of the most kickass shit I ever smoked, and I know it wasn't low tolerance that caused it

Those THC measurements from "back in the day" are a joke and 100% unreliable for potency. Back then, leaves were measured for THC content - the "scientists" did not know anything about what part to measure, it was all MJ to them.

New marijuana was not invented or created out of thin air, all of the strains today have origins in crosses of many land race strains.
Even the term "land race" is a misnomer as plants very cross pollinated in the wild / outdoors with another farmers or wild plants.

Much of the Thai stick, "redbud", real Colombian Gold, Hawaiian strains and many mexican strains would knock over anybody smoking today and would rank right among the very best today.

It's really a dumb argument, but, regardless, you're not doing any good fighting it. They'll come up with some other misinformed way to highlight the "dangers" of MJ. There are plenty of high THC strains that are less strong than other "weaker" strains with different cannabinoid and terpene profiles...but try explaining that to them. Once they find out they'll be harping about the dangers of terpenes..

If you want to affect change, be for something. Don't fight against what you want to change.
Treat these guys like a disease. The longer you fight them the stronger they become.

I remember, as a kid (allot of years ago) the same low tolerance because my brain was allot bigger target then. Since then I've killed many, many brain cells and its gotten to be a smaller target to get high.

and I do remember the hash with the stamps. yeefugginha.

Cannlabs uses HPLC.

HPLC was around in the 70's, Spectra-Physics was one of the vendors.

from 420 mag -
" so some scientists use gas chromatography (GC) analysis to measure THC."

Gas C. has also been around for quite awhile.

One of the changes that's happened with lab equipment is price & availability. I can buy an HP Gas Chrom. for about $1000 (used). A lot cheaper than it used to be.

Some of the techniques - e.g. mass spec - are based in OLD chem. knowhow, like burning a chemical to see what color it made

(something we all have a lot of experience with :woohoo: )

For example

"Chromatography dates to 1903 in the work of the Russian scientist, Mikhail Semenovich Tswett. German graduate student Fritz Prior developed solid state gas chromatography in 1947. Archer John Porter Martin, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in developing liquid–liquid (1941) and paper (1944) chromatography, laid the foundation for the development of gas chromatography and he later produced liquid-gas chromatography (1950). Erika Cremer laid the groundwork, and oversaw much of Prior's work."
