I read that it's generally good to feed when the cotyledons are shriveled up. Is this accurate?
I purchased some Foxfarm Grow Big earlier and was curious to know when to start feeding - my plants are at about ~3wks and the cotyledons are almost gone .. very yellow.
. Grow logs are nice so that we remember what works and what doesn't. Fine tuning is nice but dial it in first by finding the pattern of consistency. That way, if you do experiment and run into problems, you will at least know, what the problem is not.
I usually don't feed until after the plants have been sexed, and I try to go 2 liters/quarts of feeding followed by 4 quarts of plain water. Also since I keep my indoor plants under 3 feet, I have to start flowering after 2 weeks 3 at the max, or I outgrow my cabinet/box.
The 2 liters basically breaks down to about 3 days. So it's like 3 days of feeding followed by 4-5 days of plain water. It's just the method that has been working out well for me that last 3-4 grows and thought I would pass on my experiences. Of course the food is diluted and not full strength.
I use MG MOISTURE CONTROL MIX. It has enough food for 3 months. Everyone loves my grows. Finish off with 1 teaspoon molassas the last few waterings. Why worry???
It would all depend what u planted them in- if it was a seeding compost it should have enough nutes for at least the first month. Then for the first feed i would only use 1/4 strenght of what it says on ur nutes bottle, and gradually increase feed to no more than 3/4. (they just want to sell u more nutes and dont care that it can burn ur plants)
good luck.
Keep your PH in the ideal range and then you will be able to trust the plants when they tell you they need something. My first feeding is given when they ask me for it. I apply my feeding schedule thereafter. Usually feed every 3rd water when I have to water ever two to three days. Always water to run-off and the watering before next feed, I look to get a little extra run-off. I always water the soil down a little with straight distilled before applying the nutrient water. Not so much as it is running out the bottom in any amount, just enough to wet the roots. 1/4 of the recommended dosage of nutrients is good to start, then moving up to 1/2 dosage and so forth. Finding that particular plants threshold for nutrients is key. Don't overfeed it!!! More food, does not equal more buds!! Find that happy medium and your plant will reward you with its magic bouquet.
When you start feeding is going to depend on your growstyle,as you can see many people will wait until the plants tell them they need something. The other school of thought which I adhere to is nitrogen fertilizer is to be consistently and in small amounts to pack on vegetative growth never giving any defeciencies a chance to show.It also depends on fertilizer used,PBP pro can and should be used every watering as soon as the clones root, you don't want to do that with fox farm grow big.The only real answer to this is how you decide and what you decide to grow.
My mix doesn't contain any nutes other than lime. So I always feed mine with 1/4 strength nutes about the time it's really working on its 2nd or 3rd node.
As you can see, there are a wide range of opinions of when to start feeding your babies. Actually it is real hard to mess up badly. I am sure you will be fine, just start out with a low strength of nutes and work up to full strength and all will be well.
The general rule of thumb is to feed at around 2-3 weeks at 1/4 strength for the first feed. You're at 3 weeks, or at least you were when you posted this---The cotyledons are dying off, and considering the age, it's time to feed.
